A native of Herndon and a psychology major at Hampden-Sydney, Woody Fitzhugh played for Gus Franke's outstanding golf program that propelled the Tigers among the elite teams in the nation.  Fitzhugh also played on the Tiger basketball team.

After graduating from Hampden-Sydney, Fitzhugh earned his Mid-Atlantic PGA card, playing for three years on the PGA tour.  He won the 1984 Middle Atlantic Open and was named the Section Player of the Year on four occasions (based on money winning and points) and was the individual champion twice (1981, 1985); he finished in the top-20 three times.  Overall in his career, he qualified for the National Club Professional Championship 12 times and the PGA Championship twice (1980, 1988).  He has become one of Virginia's top professional golfers, winning the Virginia State Open Championship title in 1984, 1986 and 1988.  In the state of Virginia, Woody is mentioned in the same breath as Curtis Strange and Lanny Wadkins.  In fact, he beat Curtis Strange to win two of his three Virginia State Open titles.

He is now the owner of Woody's Driving Range in Herndon, where he lives with his wife, Joan, and three daughters, Tyler, and twins Leta and Currie.
