Dr. James Young Simms founded the Hampden-Sydney soccer program in 1969 and led the team as head coach for 12 years, phasing the team into the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Simms remains the longest-tenured Tiger soccer coach as his 12 years of service is four years longer than that of any other coach. During that tenure, Simms led the team to 50 victories, including a high-water mark of seven wins during the 1976 season.

Simms earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Maryland and his doctorate from the University of Michigan. He joined the Hampden-Sydney College faculty in 1968 and is currently an Elliott Professor of History.
