A four-year letterman for the Hampden-Sydney football team, Long was a quarterback, defensive back, tail back, split end, and kick and punt returner. Long quarterbacked the Tigers to two Knute Rockne Bowls and played on the only H-SC team ever to complete the regular season with a 10-0 record, in 1971. He was voted outstanding freshman and All-State Small College in 1968, and earned All-Mason Dixon honors as a quarterback in 1971. He was 79-of-112 for 820 yards in passing in 1971. Long lives in Richmond, VA, with his wife Barbara Jean. He is now a corporate vice president for UBS Financial Services Inc.
