Hampden-Sydney Welcomes Bridgewater On Saturday For Senior Day

Tigers will recognize 23 outstanding young men during special pregame ceremony at 12:45 p.m.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College plays its final home football game of the season against Bridgewater College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action on Saturday afternoon, November 6, at 1 p.m. on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. It's Senior Day for H-SC and 23 outstanding young men will be recognized during a special pregame ceremony. The host Tigers are 4-4 overall, 3-1 in the ODAC and alone in third place in the conference standings, while the visiting Eagles are 3-5 overall, including 0-4 in the ODAC. The game can be heard locally on WVHL Radio, Kickin' Country 92.9 FM, and will also be available worldwide on the Internet at wvhl.net or via the TuneIn Radio App, while the home radio broadcast will be simulcast with the H-SC live video Webstream, as well, at hscathletics.com.

H-SC took a 38-21 non-conference road win at The Apprentice School on October 30 in Newport News. The Tigers led 10-0 after one quarter, but fell behind 14-10 at halftime, before scoring three touchdowns in the third quarter to secure the victory. BC was idle last week, but dropped a 17-0 road decision at ODAC member Washington and Lee on Oct. 23.

Head Coach Marty Favret
H-SC is led by the veteran head coach who is the second-winningest coach in school history with 139 victories (139-80), including 15 winning campaigns, while a five-time ODAC Coach of the Year. His program is 88-47 in ODAC games, while earning five ODAC Championships and making six NCAA Division III Football Championship playoff appearances.

The Series
H-SC leads the overall series against BC, 60-16; however, Bridgewater did win the most recent meeting by a score of 51-7 on Oct. 12, 2019 at H-SC. The Tigers have won 10 of the last 13 games played between the two programs. H-SC is 10-10 against the Eagles under the direction of Coach Favret. The Tigers and BC first met on the gridiron in 1929, a 38-0 road win for the Garnet and Grey.

Scouting The Tigers
H-SC is led offensively by senior quarterback and team captain Tanner Bernard. Through eight games, Bernard has passed for an ODAC-best 2,092 yards (149-242) and 13 touchdowns with seven interceptions, adding 53 yards rushing for 2,145 yards of total offense.

The running game features senior Kaleb Smith, who missed the opening game, but has since rushed for 505 yards on 105 attempts (4.8) with nine touchdowns in seven games, adding 277 yards receiving on 28 receptions for 782 all purpose yards.

Sophomore wide receiver Braeden Bowling and fifth-year wide receiver and second-year team captain Dillon Costello lead the receiving group. Bowling has 667 yards receiving on 36 receptions with four touchdowns, while Costello has 481 yards receiving on 31 catches with three touchdowns. Fifth-year slot receiver Nick Kallivokas has 166 yards receiving on six receptions with three touchdowns, and fifth-year tight end and team captain Ed Newman adds 167 yards receiving on 23 catches with two touchdowns.

Sophomore safety Will Pickren leads the Tigers on defense with 91 tackles, including five for loss, with two interceptions and five pass breakups. Fifth-year linebacker and team captain Brendan Weinberg has 90 tackles, including 13.5 for loss, with three sacks, two interceptions, one pass breakup and one blocked punt. Sophomore safety James-Ryan Salvi adds 60 tackles, including four for loss, one interception, one pass breakup and a forced fumble. Classmate and cornerback Tobias Lafayette has an ODAC-best five interceptions, adding 32 tackles, including 2.5 for loss, and three pass breakups.

Sophomore placekicker Palmer Smith is a perfect 18-18 on PATs, and 4-5 on FGs, including a collegiate-best of 34 yards.

Sophomore left-footed punter George Langhammer has averaged 40.7 yards on 21 punts, including a collegiate-best of 67 yards, with three fair caught and three downed inside the 20.

Sophomore wide receiver Brice Wilson has averaged 25.2 yards on 13 kick returns, including a collegiate-best of 47 yards. Classmate and wide receiver Iceysis Lewis has averaged 23.6 yards on 18 kick returns, including a collegiate-best of 72 yards.

Scouting The Eagles
BC is expected to be led offensively by redshirt-senior quarterback Matt Lawton, redshirt-senior running back Demetreus Jalepes and redshirt-senior wide receiver Chad Jones. Lawton has passed for 1,384 yards (127-213) and nine touchdowns with seven interceptions. Jalepes has rushed for 359 yards on 106 attempts (3.4) with four touchdowns, adding 96 yards receiving on 12 receptions. Jones has 480 yards receiving on 29 receptions and five touchdowns. Senior linebacker Brett Tharpe leads the Eagles on defense with 86 tackles, including six for loss, two sacks and one interception. Freshman placekicker Jackson Hendren is 17-17 on PATs, and 9-12 on FGs, including a long of 48 yards. Junior punter Garrett Graves has averaged 40.5 yards on 44 punts, including a long of 62 yards, with 18 fair caught and 21 downed inside the 20.

Tanner Bernard ranks first in the ODAC and 26th in DIII passing yards (2,092), first in the ODAC and 29th in DIII passing yards per game (261.5), first in the ODAC and 47th in DIII completions per game (18.62), second in the ODAC and 36th in DIII yards per pass attempt (8.64), second in the ODAC and 43rd in DIII total offense (268.1), second in the ODAC and 45th in DIII passing yards per completion (14.04), second in the ODAC and 51st in DIII completion percentage (.616), and second in the ODAC and 60th in DIII passing efficiency (146.1).

Brendan Weinberg ranks first in the ODAC and 43rd in DIII tackles for loss (13.5), and third in the ODAC and 13th in DIII total tackles (90).

Tobias Lafayette ranks first in the ODAC and tied for sixth in DIII interceptions (5).

Iceysis Lewis ranks first in the ODAC and 55th in DIII combined kickoff return yardage (424).

Will Pickren ranks second in the ODAC and 12th in DIII total tackles (91).

Braeden Bowling ranks third in the ODAC and 53rd in DIII receiving yards (667), and fourth in the ODAC and 62nd in DIII receiving yards per game (83.4).

Brice Wilson ranks third in the ODAC and 33rd in DIII kick return average (25.2).

Kaleb Smith ranks fourth in the ODAC and 40th in DIII rushing touchdowns (9).

Strength of Schedule
The overall combined record of H-SC opponents this year is 49-31 (.613). Next week's opponent in "The Game" ... archrival Randolph-Macon (8-1), is ranked No. 20 in this week's AFCA Division III Coaches Poll, while previous foe Baldwin Wallace (OH) (7-1) is ranked No. 25. Washington and Lee (7-1) is receiving votes this week.

ODAC & D3football.com Honors
Kaleb Smith was named the ODAC Offensive Player of the Week for his 138-yard, three-touchdown game against Ferrum on Oct. 23.

Tobias Lafayette was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week for his two-interception, six-tackle game against Ferrum on Oct. 23.

Brendan Weinberg was named the ODAC Defensive Player of the Week, and to the D3football.com Team of the Week, for his 13-tackle (3.5 for loss), one-sack, two-interception, one-blocked punt and one-pass breakup game at Apprentice on Oct. 30.

Up Next
H-SC plays on the road at archrival Randolph-Macon in ODAC action on Saturday, Nov. 13, at 1 p.m. in Ashland. It's the 126th edition of "The Game" ... and the Tigers continues to lead the Oldest Small School Rivalry in the South, 60-54-11; however, the Yellow Jackets have won seven-straight and nine of the last 10 games played between the two storied programs.
