Hampden-Sydney Plays At The Apprentice School On Saturday At 1 p.m.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College plays on the road at The Apprentice School in non-conference football action on Saturday afternoon, October 30, at 1 p.m. on Builder Field in Newport News. The visiting Tigers are 3-4 overall, while the host Builders are 2-5, including a forfeit win vs. Guilford (NC). The game can be heard locally on WVHL Radio, Kickin' Country 92.9 FM, and will also be available worldwide on the Internet at wvhl.net or via the TuneIn Radio App.

H-SC took a 42-28 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) home win past Ferrum on Oct. 23 during Homecoming on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. The host Tigers led 21-7 after the first quarter and were ahead 28-21 at halftime against the visiting Panthers, but the contest was tied at 28-28 through three quarters, before the Garnet and Grey scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to secure the exciting victory. AS dropped a 49-7 road decision at ODAC member and nationally-ranked Randolph-Macon on Oct. 23, falling behind 28-0 at halftime toward the lopsided setback.

H-SC is led by the veteran head coach who is the second-winningest coach in school history with 138 victories (138-80), including 15 winning campaigns, while a five-time ODAC Coach of the Year. His program is 89-47 in ODAC games, while earning five ODAC Championships and making six NCAA Division III Football Championship playoff appearances.

The Series

H-SC leads the all-time series 9-3, including a 58-28 home win in the most recent meeting between the two programs on Oct. 14, 2017. The Tigers have won eight-straight games against AS, though the contest in 2017 was the first meeting since 1963. H-SC and the Builders first met on the gridiron on September 17, 1932, resulting in a 15-6 road win for the Tigers in Newport News.

Scouting The Tigers
H-SC is led offensively by senior quarterback and team captain Tanner Bernard (Lynchburg). Through seven games, Bernard has passed for an ODAC-best 1,886 yards (127-207) and 12 touchdowns with seven interceptions, adding 41 yards rushing for 1,927 yards of total offense.

The running game features senior Kaleb Smith (Rocky Mount), who missed the opening game, but has since rushed for 434 yards on 84 attempts (5.2) with six touchdowns in six games, adding 245 yards receiving on 23 receptions for 679 all purpose yards.

Sophomore wide receiver Braeden Bowling (Cary, NC) and fifth-year wide receiver and second-year team captain Dillon Costello (Haymarket) have separated themselves to lead the receiving group. Bowling has 622 yards receiving on 30 receptions with four touchdowns, while Costello has 455 yards receiving on 28 catches with three touchdowns. Sophomore running back Josh Jones (South Hill) has 203 yards receiving on 17 receptions with one touchdown.

Sophomore safety Will Pickren (Mt Pleasant, SC) leads the Tigers on defense with 84 tackles, including five for loss, with two interceptions and five pass breakups. Fifth-year linebacker and team captain Brendan Weinberg (Apex, NC) has 77 tackles, including 10.5 for loss, with two sacks. Sophomore safety James-Ryan Salvi (Troutville) adds 57 tackles, including four for loss, one interception and a forced fumble. Classmate and cornerback Tobias Lafayette (Charleston, SC) has an ODAC-best five interceptions, adding 31 tackles, including 2.5 for loss, and three pass breakups.

Sophomore placekicker Palmer Smith (Chesapeake) is a perfect 14-14 on PATs, and 3-4 on field goals, including a collegiate-best of 31 yards. Classmate and left-footed punter George Langhammer (Roanoke) has averaged 39.2 yards on 20 punts, including a collegiate-best of 67 yards, with three fair caught and three downed inside the 20.

Sophomore wide receiver Brice Wilson (Lovingston) has averaged 24.8 yards on 11 kick returns, including a collegiate-best of 47 yards. Classmate and wide receiver Iceysis Lewis (Radiant) has averaged 23.6 yards on 18 kick returns, including a collegiate-best of 72 yards.

Scouting The Builders
AS is expected to be led offensively by either sophomore quarterback Mason Tatum or freshman quarterback Grant Swanger, freshman running back Gabe Tejada and freshmen wide receivers Leland Girdy and Ricardo Corpus. Tatum has passed for 603 yards (58-120) and four touchdowns with five interceptions. Swanger has passed for 481 yards (39-73) and one touchdown with one interception. Tejada has rushed for 252 yards on 91 attempts (2.8) with two touchdowns, adding 138 yards receiving on 14 receptions. Girdy has 378 yards receiving on 22 receptions and one touchdown, while Corpus adds 200 yards receiving on 17 catches and four touchdowns. Sophomore placekicker Jeremiah Morgan is 11-11 on PATs, adding four field goals, including a long of 47 yards.

Tanner Bernard ranks first in the ODAC and 22nd in DIII yards per pass attempt (9.11), first in the ODAC and 23rd in DIII passing yards (1,886) and passing yards per completion (14.85), first in the ODAC and 25th in DIII passing yards per game (269.4), first in the ODAC and 54th in DIII completions per game (18.14), second in the ODAC and 33rd in DIII total offense (275.3), second in the ODAC and 47th in DIII passing efficiency (150.3), and second in the ODAC and 56th in DIII completion percentage (.614).

Braeden Bowling ranks first in the ODAC and 24th in DIII yards per reception (20.73), third in the ODAC and 45th in DIII receiving yards (622), and third in the ODAC and 47th in DIII receiving yards per game (88.9).

Will Pickren ranks second in the ODAC and fifth in DIII total tackles per game (12.0).

Tobias Lafayette ranks second in the ODAC and tied for sixth in DIII interceptions per game (0.7).

Brice Wilson ranks second in the ODAC and 33rd in DIII kick return average (24.8).

Brendan Weinberg ranks third in the ODAC and 12th in DIII total tackles per game (11.0).

Iceysis Lewis ranks fourth in the ODAC and 44th in DIII kick return average (23.6).

Strength of Schedule
The overall combined record of H-SC opponents this year is 45-27 (.625), including 28-15 (.651) for those schools that the Tigers have already played this fall. Upcoming archrival Randolph-Macon is ranked No. 24 in this week's AFCA Division III Coaches Poll, while previous foes Baldwin Wallace (72) and Washington and Lee (2) each received votes this week.
