H-SC is receiving votes this week in both the both the
AFCA D3 Coaches Poll and the
D3football.com Top 25, the first time getting votes since the preseason poll in 2016. W&J is receiving votes in the D3football.com Top 25 this week. The Presidents rank third all-time in Division III history with 790 wins, have made 27 Division III Playoff appearances and have won 27 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championships. H-SC is competing in its 131st season of football and 50th year as a charter member of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). Head Coach Vince Luvara
H-SC is led by the second-year head coach who took over the program on December 7, 2023. The former defensive coordinator at Washington & Jefferson from 2016-23, Luvara is the 29th head coach in the 131-year history of the storied Hampden-Sydney program. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native is no stranger to NCAA Division III, having played four years at Allegheny (PA) College and coached one year at Allegheny and two years at Misericordia (PA) University—each school members of Division III. Luvara is 6-5 at the College.
The Series
H-SC and W&J are meeting for just the third time overall, and for the first time since back-to-back meetings in 1989 and 1990. The Presidents lead the series 2-0, including a 23-0 win on Sept. 16, 1989 in Washington, Pennsylvania, and a 38-0 win on Sept. 15, 1990 at Hampden-Sydney.

Senior quarterback and team captain
Carter Sido (Dallas, TX) passed for 204 yards (11-25-0) and three touchdowns with no interceptions thrown in the season-opening game—adding 33 yards rushing. He is tied for first in the ODAC in passing touchdowns, second in passing yards, passing yards per game, passing efficiency (152.1) and total offense (237.0), and eighth in completion percentage (44.0). Carter ranks 13th in Division III passing yards per completion (18.55) and 33rd in points responsible for per game (18.0).
Junior running back
Terry Hicks (Clayton, NC)Â has rushed for 128 yards on 27 attempts (4.7) and one touchdown, adding one reception for 30 yards. He is second in the ODAC in rushing yards, rushing yards per game and all-purpose yards (158.0), tied for third in touchdowns and 10th in total offense (128.0). Hicks ranks 28th in DIII rushing yards per game and 42nd in all-purpose yards.

Mason Cunningham (Arlington)Â has three receptions for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Scouting The Presidents
Senior quarterback Kellan Stahl passed for 338 yards (27-42-1) and two touchdowns with one interception thrown in the season-opening game—adding 11 yards rushing and one touchdown.Â
Senior running back Kobe DeRosa has rushed for 36 yards on five attempts (7.2). Sophomore running back Andrew Sharp has rushed for 32 yards on 12 attempts (2.7) and one touchdown.
Senior wide receiver John Peduzzi has eight receptions for 107 yards and two touchdowns. He ranks second in W&J history in career receiving yards (3,207) and receiving touchdowns (41), and was Second Team All-PAC in 2024. Junior wide receiver Machai Evans has seven receptions for 91 yards. Senior wide receiver Jacob Macosko has six receptions for 94 yards, and was a Third Team D3football.com Preseason All-America selection after being named First Team All-PAC in 2024.
Sophomore linebacker Brock Sherman has 14 tackles, including 1.5 for loss and two quarterback hurries. Senior defensive back/linebacker Preston Schry has 10 tackles, including 0.5 for loss. Senior linebacker Joey Lacey and junior defensive tackle Tyler Primrose each have seven tackles, including 2.0 for loss, one sack and one quarterback hurry for Primrose.
Senior punter/placekicker Deven Wyandt was 4-4 on PAT kicks (1.000) and 1-1 on field goal attempts (1.000), including a long of 35 yards. He averaged 35.0 yards on four punts, including a long of 38 yards, with three fair-caught and one downed inside the 20. Will Thomas '25—Howerton went on to become one of 12 finalists for the prestigious award in 2020. Robert is a Dean's List student majoring in economics and business with a minor in rhetoric, and has attained a 3.59 GPA.

Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®
Carter Sido was nominated for the 2025 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, recognizing college football student-athletes and head coaches for their commitment to community service and leadership beyond the gridiron. He estimates that he devoted 40-plus hours of service to the following causes during 2024-25: The Big Event, Literacy Days and the Brother4Brother Mentorship Program. Carter is also a member of
QBs vs Cancer, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a common objective to raise money in the fight against cancer—his efforts benefit Breast Cancer Awareness and Research. The final roster of 23 award recipients will be announced in September.
Hampden-Sydney Football
H-SC has a 130-plus year history of football, amassing 584 wins since beginning in 1892. The Tigers have experienced great success over the years, including nine ODAC Championships, 10 Mason-Dixon Conference Championships, seven NCAA Division III Championship Playoff appearances, 88 All-America selections, 13 Academic All-America selections and 223 First Team All-ODAC honorees. H-SC also played in the 1970 and 1971 Knute Rockne Bowls (NCAA College Division East Regional Championship).
From Division III To FBS Memphis
Ryan Silverfield '03 became the 25th head coach in the University of Memphis football history in December 2019 and began his tenure by leading the Tigers into their first major bowl game appearance: the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic in Dallas. He is currently 44-21 overall in his sixth season at the helm of the Tigers, including 2-0 in 2025. Silverfield led Memphis to a record of 11-2 in 2024, including a 42-37 win past West Virginia in the Scooter's Coffee Frisco Bowl on December 17, 2024 at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas. Ryan coached four seasons as an undergraduate at H-SC, starting as an offensive assistant in 2000, serving as the defensive line coach during 2001 and 2002, before coaching the tight ends and H-backs in 2003.
