—the 130th edition of "The Game"—considered the oldest small school rivalry in the South. The visiting Tigers are 7-2 overall, 5-2 in the ODAC and tied for third place. The host Yellow Jackets are 8-1 overall, 7-0 in the ODAC and have secured the ODAC's automatic entry into the NCAA Division III 40-team postseason playoffs and at least a share of their fourth straight and league-best 16th conference trophy. RMC is ranked 18th nationally this week in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) D3 Coaches Poll, and 21st in the D3football.com Top 25. H-SC dropped a disappointing
45-42 ODAC decision at home to Bridgewater on Nov. 8. RMC had a bye week this past weekend, after a 31-14 home win past Shenandoah on Nov. 1. H-SC is competing in its 131st season of football and 50th year as a charter member of the ODAC. RMC is in its 145th season of football and also a charter member of the conference.

Head Coach Vince Luvara
H-SC is led by the second-year head coach who took over the program on December 7, 2023. The former defensive coordinator at Washington & Jefferson (PA) College from 2016-23, Luvara is the 29th head coach in the 131-year history of the storied Hampden-Sydney program. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native is no stranger to NCAA Division III, having played four years at Allegheny (PA) College and coached one year at Allegheny and two years at Misericordia (PA) University—each school members of Division III. Luvara is 12-7 at the College.
The Series
H-SC continues to narrowly lead the all-time series against RMC,
60-58-11; however, the Yellow Jackets have won 11-straight and 13 of the last 14 games played between the two storied programs. RMC won
27-6 last Nov. 16, 2024 on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium, and the Yellow Jackets won
49-10 on Nov. 11, 2023—the most recent visit to Ashland by the Tigers. H-SC's last win in the series was on Nov. 16, 2013, a
28-26 road win. The Tigers are 30-27-5 all-time in road games in Ashland, while 7-14 versus RMC during the tenure of current Yellow Jacket head coach Pedro Arruza. The archrivals first met on the gridiron in 1893 at H-SC, as RMC won that first meeting, 12-6, in the Tigers' second year as a program. H-SC returned the favor in 1896 with a 24-0 home win. The longest winning streak in the series is the current 11 by RMC. H-SC won eight consecutive games in the series from 1917-23, while playing twice during both 1917 and 1919.
Last Year
H-SC scored on the opening possession of the game and led 6-0 at halftime. RMC scored on the first possession of the third quarter, and led 13-6 entering the fourth quarter. The Yellow Jackets added two more touchdowns, including with 57-seconds remaining, for the 27-6 road win. Dante Casciola passed for 101 yards (10-14-1) and one touchdown for RMC, adding 92 yards rushing on 12 attempts. Kwesi Clarke had a game-high 96 yards rushing on 16 attempts and two touchdowns, adding 23 yards receiving on two receptions, while Jason Moore had 21 yards receiving on three receptions and one touchdown.
Wendell Thompson passed for a career-high 133 yards (13-24-1) for H-SC.
Terry Hicks rushed for 88 yards on 19 attempts, adding 34 yards receiving on three receptions, while
Sutton Lasso '25 had a game-high 70 yards receiving on five receptions and one touchdown.

Carter Sido (Dallas, TX) has passed for 2,047 yards (116-192-8) and 28 touchdowns with eight interceptions thrown in nine games, adding 159 yards rushing on 47 attempts (3.4). He leads the ODAC in passing yards, passing yards per game (227.4), passing touchdowns, passing efficiency (189.8), total offense (2,206) and total offense per game (245.1), and is fifth in completion percentage (60.4). Carter leads NCAA Division III passing yards per completion (17.65), is fourth in yards per pass attempt (10.66), sixth in passing efficiency, seventh in passing touchdowns, 18th in points responsible for (180) and 21st in points responsible for per game (20.0).
Junior running back
Terry Hicks (Clayton, NC) has rushed for 988 yards on 181 attempts (5.5) and 13 touchdowns, adding eight receptions for 88 yards. He leads the ODAC in rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, all-purpose yards (1,076), all-purpose yards per game (119.6), total touchdowns (13) and total points (78), is second in rushing yards per game (109.8) and points per game (8.7), and ninth in total offense (988). Terry ranks 15th in DIII rushing touchdowns, 20th in rushing yards and 23rd in rushing yards per game.

Joseph Gonzalez (Spotsylvania) has rushed for 414 yards on 76 attempts (5.4) and five touchdowns, adding two receptions for 19 yards. Jojo has averaged 32.3 yards on 18 kick returns, including a long of 80 yards. He leads the ODAC in kick return average, is second in kick return yards (582) and all-purpose yards (1,015), is third in all-purpose yards per game (112.8), is tied for seventh in rushing touchdowns, ninth in rushing yards, tied for ninth in total touchdowns (5) and 10th in rushing yards per game (46.0). Joseph ranks fourth in DIII kick return average and 22nd in kick return yards.

Mason Cunningham (Arlington) has 42 receptions for 835 yards and 11 touchdowns. He leads the ODAC in receiving yards, receiving yards per game (92.8) and receiving touchdowns, is second in total touchdowns (11) and total points (66), third in receptions and yards per reception (19.9), fourth in all-purpose yards (860) and points per game (7.3), and fifth all-purpose yards per game (95.6). Mason ranks ninth in DIII receiving touchdowns.

Manning Lasso (Raleigh, NC) has 26 receptions for 506 yards and five touchdowns. William V. Campbell Trophy®
Robert Clarke is the program's sixth-straight
semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy®, college football's premier scholar-athlete award. Robert is among 177 semifinalists from all divisions, while one of three from the ODAC and among the 33 elected from Division III. He follows in the footsteps of Tyler Howerton '21, Kaleb Smith '22, Michael Harris '23, George Langhammer '24 and
Will Thomas '25—Howerton went on to become one of 12 finalists for the prestigious award in 2020. Robert is a Dean's List student majoring in economics and business with a minor in rhetoric, and has attained a 3.59 GPA. Unfortunately, he was not among the 16 finalists announced by the National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame on October 22.
Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®
Carter Sido was nominated for the 2025 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, recognizing college football student-athletes and head coaches for their commitment to community service and leadership beyond the gridiron. He devoted 40-plus hours of service to the following causes during 2024-25: The Big Event, Literacy Days and the Brother4Brother Mentorship Program. Carter is also a member of QBs vs Cancer, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a common objective to raise money in the fight against cancer—his efforts benefit Breast Cancer Awareness and Research. Unfortunately, he was not among the final roster of 23 award recipients announced by the American Football Coaches Association on September 16.
Hampden-Sydney Football
H-SC has a 131-year history of football, amassing 590 wins since beginning in 1892. The Tigers have experienced great success over the years, including nine ODAC Championships, 10 Mason-Dixon Conference Championships, seven NCAA Division III Championship Playoff appearances, 88 All-America selections, 13 Academic All-America selections and 223 First Team All-ODAC honorees. H-SC also played in the 1970 and 1971 Knute Rockne Bowls (NCAA College Division East Regional Championship).
From Division III To FBS Memphis
Ryan Silverfield '03 became the 25th head coach in the University of Memphis football history in December 2019 and began his tenure by leading the Tigers into their first major bowl game appearance: the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic in Dallas. He is currently 50-23 overall in his sixth season at the helm of the Tigers, including 8-2 in 2025. Silverfield led Memphis to a record of 11-2 in 2024, including a 42-37 win past West Virginia in the Scooter's Coffee Frisco Bowl on December 17, 2024 at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas. Ryan coached four seasons as an undergraduate at H-SC, starting as an offensive assistant in 2000, serving as the defensive line coach during 2001 and 2002, before coaching the tight ends and H-backs in 2003.
