HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- (RV)Hampden-Sydney welcomes Roanoke in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football action on Saturday, October 25, at 1 p.m. on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. The host Tigers are 5-1 overall, 3-1 in the ODAC, and receiving votes this week in both the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) D3 Coaches Poll (23) and the D3football.com Top 25 (3). The visiting Maroons are 4-2 overall, 2-2 in the ODAC. It's Homecoming Weekend on the Hill and the game can be heard locally on WVHL Radio, Kickin' Country 92.9 FM, and will also be available worldwide on the Internet at wvhl.net or via the TuneIn Radio App, pregame airing at 12:30 p.m., while available to watch as well at flocollege.com.

H-SC took a 67-7 ODAC road win at Averett on Oct. 18 in Danville. The visiting Tigers led 22-0 after one quarter, 46-0 at halftime and 60-7 after three quarters en route to the triumph past the host Cougars. The Garnet & Grey totaled a season-high 655 yards of total offense, including 366 yards rushing and 289 yards passing. RC lost 33-20 at home to Shenandoah on Oct. 18 at Salem Stadium in Salem. H-SC is competing in its 131st season of football and 50th year as a charter member of the ODAC. RC is also a charter member of the ODAC; however, the Maroons are playing their first varsity season of football since 1942.

Head Coach Vince Luvara
H-SC is led by the second-year head coach who took over the program on December 7, 2023. The former defensive coordinator at Washington & Jefferson (PA) College from 2016-23, Luvara is the 29th head coach in the 131-year history of the storied Hampden-Sydney program. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native is no stranger to NCAA Division III, having played four years at Allegheny (PA) College and coached one year at Allegheny and two years at Misericordia (PA) University—each school members of Division III. Luvara is 10-6 at the College.

The Series
RC narrowly leads the overall series against H-SC, 11-10, although the two schools have not played since 1942, a 38-0 home shutout by the Tigers. H-SC and the Maroons first met on the gridiron on Oct. 3, 1896, resulting in a 10-6 home win for the Garnet & Grey, who won seven of the first eight games between the two schools. RC responded with 10 wins in the next 11 games, before the Tigers won the last two games in the series during World War II, including a 19-2 road win in 1941.

H-SC leads NCAA Division III in kick return average (33.47), is sixth in fewest fumbles lost (1), seventh in scoring offense (48.0), team passing efficiency (185.30) and passing yards per completion (16.73), eighth in rushing offense (257.8), 11th in total offense (503.2), 13th in first downs offense (154), 16th in winning percentage (.833), 22nd in red zone offense (.906) and fewest tackles for loss allowed (3.67), 23rd in turnover margin (1.17), 28th in team passing efficiency defense (105.94), 35th in 3rd down conversion (.500), 36th in fewest turnovers lost (6), 38th in turnovers gained (13), 40th in fewest sacks allowed (1) and 43rd in defensive interceptions (8).

Senior quarterback and team captain Carter Sido (Dallas, TX) has passed for 1,354 yards (79-129-5) and 19 touchdowns with five interceptions thrown in six games—adding 134 yards rushing on 32 attempts (4.2). He leads the ODAC in passing touchdowns, passing efficiency (190.3), passing yards per game (225.7) and total offense per game (248.0), and is second in passing yards, completion percentage (61.2) and total offense (1,488). Carter ranks third in NCAA Division III passing yards per completion (17.14), sixth in passing efficiency and yards per pass attempt (10.50), 11th in passing touchdowns, 27th in points responsible for per game (19.0) and 28th in points responsible for (114).

Junior running back Terry Hicks (Clayton, NC) has rushed for 636 yards on 128 attempts (5.0) and nine touchdowns, adding five receptions for 68 yards. He is tied for first in the ODAC in rushing touchdowns, total touchdowns (9), total points (54) and points per game (9.0), is second in rushing yards, rushing yards per game (106.0), all-purpose yards (704) and all-purpose yards per game (117.3), ninth in total offense (636) and 10th in total offense per game (106.0). Terry ranks 17th in DIII rushing touchdowns, 27th in rushing yards per game, 28th in rushing yards and total touchdowns, and 31st in total points and points per game.

Senior running back/kick return specialist Joseph Gonzalez (Spotsylvania) has rushed for 314 yards on 53 attempts (5.9) and four touchdowns, adding one reception for five yards. Jojo has averaged 37.5 yards on 13 kick returns, including a long of 80 yards. He leads the ODAC in kick return yards (487), kick return average, all-purpose yards (806) and all-purpose yards per game (134.3), is tied for fifth in rushing touchdowns, tied for seventh in total touchdowns (4), ninth in rushing yards and rushing yards per game (52.3), and tied for 10th in total points (24). Jojo ranks second in DIII kick return average, fifth in kick return yards and 33rd in all-purpose yards per game.

Senior wide receiver and team captain Mason Cunningham (Arlington) has 24 receptions for 491 yards and seven touchdowns. He leads the ODAC in receiving touchdowns and receiving yards per game (81.8), is second in receiving yards and yards per reception (20.46), third in points per game (7.0), tied for third in receptions, fourth in total touchdowns (7) and total points (42), eighth in all-purpose yards per game (83.7) and 10th in all-purpose yards (502). Mason ranks 23rd in DIII receiving touchdowns and 31st in yards per reception.

Sophomore wide receiver Manning Lasso (raleigh, NC) has 19 receptions for 349 yards and five touchdowns. He is second in the ODAC in receiving touchdowns, third in yards per reception (18.4), fourth in receiving yards per game (58.2), fifth in receiving yards, sixth in total touchdowns, eighth in total points (30) and ninth in points per game (5.0).

Senior wide receiver Jordan Jackson (Fredericksburg) has 14 receptions for 253 yards and three touchdowns. He is fourth in the ODAC in yards per reception (18.1), tied for fifth in receiving touchdowns and 10th in receiving yards per game (42.2).

Sophomore safety Mitch Ladamus (Fort Mill, SC) has 42 tackles, including 23 solo, two interceptions, five pass breakups, one quarterback hurry and one fumble recovered. He is tied for second in the ODAC in passes defended (7), tied for fourth in pass breakups and tied for fifth in interceptions.

Senior linebacker and team captain Robert Clarke (Atlanta, GA) and senior safety and team captain Markevus Graves-Franklin (Lynchburg) each have 40 tackles ... Clarke with 16 solo, 4.0 for loss, 2.0 sacks, one interception and two pass breakups ... Graves-Franklin with 22 solo, 2.5 for loss and one interception.

Sophomore linebacker Frank Brewer (Charlotte, NC) has 33 tackles, including 11 solo, 1.5 for loss, 1.0 sack, two pass breakups, one qb hurry and one fumble recovered.

Sophomore cornerback Parks Cromwell (Charlotte, NC) has 28 tackles, including 20 solo, 2.0 for loss, 1.0 sack, one interception, four pass breakups, one qb hurry and two forced fumbles. He is tied for eighth in the ODAC in passes defended (5) and pass breakups. Parks ranks 30th in DIII forced fumbles. 

Sophomore defensive tackle Kenen Barlowe (North Chesterfield) has 25 tackles, including eight solo, 2.0 for loss and 1.0 sack.

Junior cornerback Cam Jackson (Alexandria) has 21 tackles, including seven solo, five pass breakups and one blocked kick (FGA). He is tied for fourth in the ODAC in pass  breakups and tied for eighth in passed defended (5).

Senior cornerback James Townsend (Hardeeville, SC) has 20 tackles, including nine solo, two interceptions and five pass breakups. He is tied for second in the ODAC in passes defended (7), tied for fourth in pass breakups (5) and tied for fifth in interceptions.

Junior punter/placekicker Camden Richardson (Midlothian) has averaged 37.8 yards on 14 punts, including a long of 55 yards, with four fair-caught and four downed inside the 20. Richardson is also 20-22 on PAT kicks (.909) and 2-2 on field goal attempts (1.000), including a long of 30 yards. He is tied for first in the ODAC in field goal percentage, is third in kick scoring points (26), tied for third in field goals made, fourth in punting average, seventh in points per game (5.2) and ninth in total points (26).

Freshman placekicker Davis Dudley (Charlotte, NC) is a perfect 16-16 on PAT kicks (1.000) and 1-1 on field goal attempts, including a long of 33 yards. He is tied for fifth in the ODAC in field goals made.

Freshman placekicker Hank Webb (Salisbury, NC) has averaged 61.6 yards on 42 kickoffs (3.4-yard line) with 13 touchbacks (.310). He is third in the ODAC in touchbacks. Hank ranks 32nd in NCAA Division III touchbacks.

Scouting The Maroons
Junior quarterback Kam Hill has passed for 1,135 yards (84-153-7) and six touchdowns with seven interceptions thrown in six games, adding 72 yards rushing on 40 attempts (1.8) and one touchdown. Sophomore running back Tyson Miller has rushed for 333 yards on 95 attempts (3.5) and three touchdowns. Sophomore running back Polo Hill has rushed for 257 yards on 50 attempts (5.1) and two touchdowns. Sophomore wide receiver Grey Deal has 24 receptions for 401 yards and four touchdowns. Sophomore wide receiver Khamari Garner has 21 receptions for 296 yards and one touchdown.

Sophomore linebacker Charlie Davis has 63 tackles, including 40 solo, 6.5 for loss, 1.0 sack, one quarterback hurry, two fumbles recovered and two forced fumbles. Sophomore linebacker Tandom Smith has 35 tackles, including 26 solo, 2.5 for loss, three pass breakups, one fumble recovered and one blocked kick. Sophomore safety Lane Shoemaker has 24 tackles, including 19 solo, 1.0 for loss, three interceptions, two pass breakups and one forced fumble. Sophomore cornerback Javier Waldron leads the ODAC and Maroons with five interceptions.

Sophomore placekicker Ethan Cyr is 18-19 on PAT kicks (.947) and 6-11 on field goal attempts (.545), including a long of 33 yards, while averaging 53.4 yards on 31 kickoffs (11.6-yard line) with four touchbacks (.129). Sophomore punter Zach Nicklas has averaged 40.8 yards on 24 punts, including a long of 76 yards, with six fair-caught and seven downed inside the 20.

Junior wide receiver/kick return specialist KJ Bratton has averaged 25.5 yards on eight kick returns, including a long of 66 yards. Junior wide receiver/return specialist Jackson Swanson has averaged 23.8 yards on five kick returns, including a long of 36 yards, and has averaged 6.2 yards on six punt returns, including a long of 17 yards.

New School Record
H-SC totaled 443 yards rushing vs. Shenandoah (9/20)—a new team single-game rushing record—surpassing the previous record of 395 yards rushing at Bridgewater (9/24/88).

It's A First (X14)
Freshman running back Will Foley (Virginia Beach) scored his first collegiate rushing touchdown in the season-opener at DelVal (9/6) ... a two-yard run in the fourth quarter. Camden Richardson made his first collegiate PAT kick and his first collegiate field goal at DelVal ... going 4-4 on PAT kicks, the first in the first quarter, and 1-1 on field goals—making a 24-yarder in the second quarter. Davis Dudley made his first collegiate PAT kick at DelVal ... going 1-1 on PAT kicks in the fourth quarter, and made his first collegiate field goal at Averett (10/18) ... making a 33-yarder in the second quarter. Team Captains
Leading the Tigers are senior linebacker Robert Clarke, senior wide receiver Mason Cunningham, senior safety Markevus Graves-Franklin, senior quarterback Carter Sido, senior right guard William Stimmel (Atlanta, GA) and sophomore left guard Cash Topinka (Charlotte, NC). Clarke, Sido and Stimmel are each second-year captains, while Cunningham, Graves-Franklin and Topinka are each first-year captains. Robert is the son of Tom and Jill Clarke. Mason is the son of John and Kristen Cunningham. Markevus is the son of Mark Graves and Shalita Franklin. Carter is the son of Chris Sido and Tova Sido. William is the son of Carl and Claudia Stimmel. Cash is the son of Jeff and Melissa Topinka.

William V. Campbell Trophy®
Robert Clarke
is the program's sixth-straight semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy®, college football's premier scholar-athlete award. Robert is among 177 semifinalists from all divisions, while one of three from the ODAC and among the 33 elected from Division III. He follows in the footsteps of Tyler Howerton '21, Kaleb Smith '22, Michael Harris '23, George Langhammer '24 and Will Thomas '25—Howerton went on to become one of 12 finalists for the prestigious award in 2020. Robert is a Dean's List student majoring in economics and business with a minor in rhetoric, and has attained a 3.59 GPA. Unfortunately, he was not among the 16 finalists announced by the National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame on October 22.

Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®
Carter Sido
was nominated for the 2025 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, recognizing college football student-athletes and head coaches for their commitment to community service and leadership beyond the gridiron. He devoted 40-plus hours of service to the following causes during 2024-25: The Big Event, Literacy Days and the Brother4Brother Mentorship Program. Carter is also a member of QBs vs Cancer, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a common objective to raise money in the fight against cancer—his efforts benefit Breast Cancer Awareness and Research. Unfortunately, he was not among the final roster of 23 award recipients announced by the American Football Coaches Association on September 16.

Hampden-Sydney Football
H-SC has a 130-plus year history of football, amassing 588 wins since beginning in 1892. The Tigers have experienced great success over the years, including nine ODAC Championships, 10 Mason-Dixon Conference Championships, seven NCAA Division III Championship Playoff appearances, 88 All-America selections, 13 Academic All-America selections and 223 First Team All-ODAC honorees. H-SC also played in the 1970 and 1971 Knute Rockne Bowls (NCAA College Division East Regional Championship).

From Division III To FBS Memphis
Ryan Silverfield '03
became the 25th head coach in the University of Memphis football history in December 2019 and began his tenure by leading the Tigers into their first major bowl game appearance: the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic in Dallas. He is currently 48-22 overall in his sixth season at the helm of the Tigers, including 6-1 in 2025. Silverfield led Memphis to a record of 11-2 in 2024, including a 42-37 win past West Virginia in the Scooter's Coffee Frisco Bowl on December 17, 2024 at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas. Ryan coached four seasons as an undergraduate at H-SC, starting as an offensive assistant in 2000, serving as the defensive line coach during 2001 and 2002, before coaching the tight ends and H-backs in 2003.

H-SC plays on the road next weekend at ODAC opponent Gallaudet on Saturday, November 1, at 1 p.m. in Washington, D.C. The Bison are associate members of the conference in football-only, beginning this year.
