HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- (RV)Hampden-Sydney plays on the road at Averett in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football action on Saturday, October 18, at 4 p.m. in Danville. The visiting Tigers are 4-1 overall, 2-1 in the ODAC, and receiving votes (24) in this week's American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) D3 Coaches Poll. The host Cougars are 0-5 overall, 0-3 in the ODAC. The game can be heard locally on WVHL Radio, Kickin' Country 92.9 FM, and will also be available worldwide on the Internet at wvhl.net or via the TuneIn Radio App, pregame airing at 3:30 p.m., while available to watch as well at flocollege.com.

H-SC had a bye week on Oct. 11 after dropping a 42-34 decision at home to ODAC opponent Washington and Lee on Oct. 4 on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. The Tigers trailed 14-7 after one quarter, 28-21 at halftime and 35-21 after three quarters, before a fourth quarter rally fell just short. The visiting Generals stopped the Garnet & Grey with an interception at the W&L five-yard line with 1:53 remaining and then ran out the clock for the road win. AU lost 77-20 on the road at (25)Randolph-Macon on Oct. 11 in Ashland. H-SC is competing in its 131st season of football and 50th year as a charter member of the ODAC. AU only recently joined the ODAC for 2022-23.

Head Coach Vince Luvara
H-SC is led by the second-year head coach who took over the program on December 7, 2023. The former defensive coordinator at Washington & Jefferson (PA) College from 2016-23, Luvara is the 29th head coach in the 131-year history of the storied Hampden-Sydney program. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native is no stranger to NCAA Division III, having played four years at Allegheny (PA) College and coached one year at Allegheny and two years at Misericordia (PA) University—each school members of Division III. Luvara is 9-6 at the College.

The Series
H-SC leads the overall series against AU 8-3 and has won three-straight, including a 42-21 home win last Oct. 26, 2024 at Everett Stadium. The Tigers and Cougars first met on the gridiron in 2010, resulting in a 45-30 road win for H-SC. The Garnet & Grey are 3-2 on the road at AU, including a 31-28 win on Oct. 14, 2023 in the most recent game in Danville—Mason Cunningham had a career-high 199 yards receiving and two touchdowns in that game. Cunningham has 19 receptions for 329 yards and four touchdowns in two career games against the Cougars.

Scouting The Tigers
H-SC is ranked fourth in NCAA Division III kick return average (31.27), eighth in passing yards per completion (16.66), 11th in scoring offense (44.0), 12th in fewest fumbles lost (1), 17th in rushing offense (236.2) and total offense (472.8), 18th in passing efficiency (170.54), 27th in first downs offense (123), 31st in passing efficiency defense (104.36), 32nd in fewest tackles for loss allowed (4), 34th in turnover margin (1.00) and 35th in turnovers gained (11) and fumbles recovered (5).

Senior quarterback and team captain Carter Sido (Dallas, TX) has passed for 1,138 yards (67-115-5) and 15 touchdowns with five interceptions thrown in five games—adding 115 yards rushing on 28 attempts (4.1). He leads the ODAC in passing touchdowns, passing efficiency (175.7), passing yards per game (227.6) and total offense per game (250.6), is second in passing yards and total offense (1,253) and tied for fourth in completion percentage (58.3). Carter ranks fourth in NCAA Division III passing yards per completion (16.99), 11th in yards per pass attempt (9.90), 14th in passing touchdowns, 17th in passing efficiency, and 34th in points responsible for (90) and points responsible for per game (18.0).

Junior running back Terry Hicks (Clayton, NC) has rushed for 547 yards on 119 attempts (4.6) and eight touchdowns, adding five receptions for 68 yards. He leads the ODAC in points per game (9.6), is second in rushing yards, rushing yards per game (109.4), all-purpose yards per game (123.0), rushing touchdowns, total touchdowns and total points (48), and third in and all-purpose yards (615). Terry ranks 18th in DIII rushing touchdowns, 26th in rushing yards per game, 29th in total touchdowns and points per game, 30th in rushing yards and 31th in total points.

Senior wide receiver and team captain Mason Cunningham (Arlington) has 19 receptions for 430 yards and six touchdowns. He leads the ODAC in receiving touchdowns, is second in receiving yards, receiving yards per game (86.0) and yards per reception (22.63), fourth in points per game (7.2), tied for fourth in total touchdowns (6) and total points (36), and tied for fifth in receptions. Mason ranks 23rd in DIII receiving touchdowns and 24th in yards per reception. Sophomore wide receiver Manning Lasso (Raleigh, NC) has 15 receptions for 240 yards and three touchdowns. He is tied for second in the ODAC in receiving touchdowns, seventh in yards per reception (16.0), ninth in receiving yards per game (48.0) and tied for 10th in total touchdowns.

Senior wide receiver Jordan Jackson (Fredericksburg) has 11 receptions for 202 yards and two touchdowns. He is fourth in the ODAC in yards per reception (18.4) and tied for ninth in receiving touchdowns. Sophomore tight end Kam Mahoney (Bristow) has seven receptions for 74 yards and two touchdowns. He is tied for ninth in receiving touchdowns.

Sophomore safety Mitch Ladamus (Fort Mill, SC) has 40 tackles, including 22 solo, one interception, five pass breakups, one quarterback hurry and one fumble recovered. He is tied for third in the ODAC in pass breakups and tied for fourth in passes defended (6). Senior linebacker and team captain Robert Clarke (Atlanta, GA) and senior safety and team captain Markevus Graves-Franklin (Lynchburg) each have 35 tackles ... Clarke with 15 solo, 4.0 for loss, 2.0 sacks and two pass breakups, and Graves-Franklin with 19 solo, 2.0 for loss and one interception. Sophomore linebacker Frank Brewer (Charlotte, NC) has 30 tackles, including 10 solo, 1.5 for loss, 1.0 sack, two pass breakups, one qb hurry and one fumble recovered. Sophomore cornerback Parks Cromwell (Charlotte, NC) has 26 tackles, including 18 solo, 2.0 for loss, 1.0 sack, one interception, four pass breakups, one qb hurry and two forced fumbles. He is tied for seventh in the ODAC in pass breakups and tied for eighth in passes defended (5). Parks ranks 19th in DIII forced fumbles. Sophomore defensive tackle Kenen Barlowe (North Chesterfield) has 22tackles, including seven solo, 1.5 for loss and 1.0 sack. Senior cornerback James Townsend (Hardeeville, SC) and junior cornerback Cam Jackson (Alexandria) each have 18 tackles ... Townsend with seven solo, two interceptions and four pass breakups, and Jackson with seven solo, five pass breakups and one blocked PAT kick. Townsend is tied for fourth in the ODAC in passes defended (6), tied for fifth in interceptions and tied for seventh in pass breakups (4).

Junior punter/placekicker Camden Richardson (Midlothian) is 20-22 on PAT kicks (.909) and 2-2 on field goal attempts (1.000), including a long of 30 yards. He has averaged 37.8 yards on 14 punts, including a long of 55 yards, with four fair-caught and four downed inside the 20. Richardson is tied for first in the ODAC in field goal percentage, is third in kick scoring points (26) and tied for third in field goals made. Freshman placekicker Davis Dudley (Charlotte, NC) is 8-8 on PAT kicks (1.000). Freshman placekicker Hank Webb (Salisbury, NC) has averaged 61.7 yards on 32 kickoffs (3.3-yard line) with 12 touchbacks (.375).

Senior running back/return specialist Joseph Gonzalez (Spotsylvania) has averaged 33.9 yards on 12 kick returns, including a long of 58 yards, and adds 253 yards rushing on 49 attempts (5.2) and three touchdowns, as well as one reception for five yards. He leads the ODAC in kick return yards (407), kick return average and all-purpose yards per game (133.0), and is second in all-purpose yards (665). Joseph ranks fifth in DIII kick return average, 10th in kick return yards and 39th in all-purpose yards per game.

Scouting The Cougars
Junior quarterback Ethan Ross has passed for 1,097 yards (113-193-8) and nine touchdowns with eight interceptions thrown in five games, adding 76 yards rushing on 30 attempts (2.5) and two touchdowns. Senior running back Gaby Soto has rushed for 46 yards on 25 attempts (1.8). Senior running back Deaken Nodine has rushed for 50 yards on 16 attempts (3.1). Junior wide receiver Kayden Jackson has 22 receptions for 257 yards and one touchdown. Senior wide receiver Jamarrie Lumpkins has 18 receptions for 213 yards and two touchdowns. Junior wide receiver Christian Jones has 17 receptions for 159 yards and two touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Jamahrie Owens has 14 receptions for 171 yards and three touchdowns. Junior linebacker Tyler Poff has 31 tackles in five games, including 0.5 for loss (half-sack). Sophomore safety Jeremiah Marks has 28 tackles, including 1.0 for loss, one interception, one pass breakup and one forced fumble. Sophomore defensive end Rocco Fazzolari and redshirt-freshman safety Caden Thorne each have 27 tackles ... Fazzolari with 5.0 for loss, one sack, one pass breakup and two quarterback hurries, and Thorne with 1.0 for loss and one qb hurry. Freshman placekicker/punter Michael Markulic is 5-9 on PAT kicks (.556) and 1-1 on field goal attempts (28 yards). He has averaged 33.5 yards on 19 punts, including a long of 61 yards, with six fair-caught and three downed inside the 20, while averaging 56.3 yards on 19 kickoffs (8.7-yard line) with two touchbacks (.105). Jamarrie Lumpkins has averaged 16.4 yards on 18 kick returns, including a long of 29 yards. Redshirt-senior Andre Francois has averaged 15.5 yards on two punt returns, including a long of 24 yards.

New School Record
H-SC totaled 443 yards rushing vs. Shenandoah (9/20)—a new team single-game rushing record—surpassing the previous record of 395 yards rushing at Bridgewater (9/24/88).

Freshman running back Will Foley (Virginia Beach) scored his first collegiate rushing touchdown in the season-opener at DelVal (9/6) ... a two-yard run in the fourth quarter. Camden Richardson made his first collegiate PAT kick and his first collegiate field goal at DelVal ... going 4-4 on PAT kicks, the first in the first quarter, and 1-1 on field goals—making a 24-yarder in the second quarter. Davis Dudley made his first collegiate PAT kick at DelVal ... going 1-1 on PAT kicks in the fourth quarter. Jordan Jackson caught his first collegiate receiving touchdown vs. (RV)Washington & Jefferson (9/13) ... a 29-yard reception in the third quarter. Team Captains
Leading the Tigers are senior linebacker Robert Clarke, senior wide receiver Mason Cunningham, senior safety Markevus Graves-Franklin, senior quarterback Carter Sido, senior right guard William Stimmel (Atlanta, GA) and sophomore left guard Cash Topinka (Charlotte, NC). Clarke, Sido and Stimmel are each second-year captains, while Cunningham, Graves-Franklin and Topinka are each first-year captains. Robert is the son of Tom and Jill Clarke. Mason is the son of John and Kristen Cunningham. Markevus is the son of Mark Graves and Shalita Franklin. Carter is the son of Chris Sido and Tova Sido. William is the son of Carl and Claudia Stimmel. Cash is the son of Jeff and Melissa Topinka.

William V. Campbell Trophy®
Robert Clarke
is the program's sixth-straight semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy®, college football's premier scholar-athlete award. Robert is among 177 semifinalists from all divisions, while one of three from the ODAC and among the 33 elected from Division III. He follows in the footsteps of Tyler Howerton '21, Kaleb Smith '22, Michael Harris '23, George Langhammer '24 and Will Thomas '25—Howerton went on to become one of 12 finalists for the prestigious award in 2020. Robert is a Dean's List student majoring in economics and business with a minor in rhetoric, and has attained a 3.59 GPA.
 
Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®
Carter Sido
was nominated for the 2025 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, recognizing college football student-athletes and head coaches for their commitment to community service and leadership beyond the gridiron. He devoted 40-plus hours of service to the following causes during 2024-25: The Big Event, Literacy Days and the Brother4Brother Mentorship Program. Carter is also a member of QBs vs Cancer, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a common objective to raise money in the fight against cancer—his efforts benefit Breast Cancer Awareness and Research. Unfortunately, he did not make the final roster of 23 award recipients announced on September 16.

Hampden-Sydney Football
H-SC has a 130-plus year history of football, amassing 587 wins since beginning in 1892. The Tigers have experienced great success over the years, including nine ODAC Championships, 10 Mason-Dixon Conference Championships, seven NCAA Division III Championship Playoff appearances, 88 All-America selections, 13 Academic All-America selections and 223 First Team All-ODAC honorees. H-SC also played in the 1970 and 1971 Knute Rockne Bowls (NCAA College Division East Regional Championship).

From Division III To FBS Memphis
Ryan Silverfield '03
became the 25th head coach in the University of Memphis football history in December 2019 and began his tenure by leading the Tigers into their first major bowl game appearance: the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic in Dallas. He is currently 48-21 overall in his sixth season at the helm of the Tigers, including 6-0 in 2025. Silverfield led Memphis to a record of 11-2 in 2024, including a 42-37 win past West Virginia in the Scooter's Coffee Frisco Bowl on December 17, 2024 at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas. Ryan coached four seasons as an undergraduate at H-SC, starting as an offensive assistant in 2000, serving as the defensive line coach during 2001 and 2002, before coaching the tight ends and H-backs in 2003.

H-SC returns home next weekend to welcome ODAC opponent Roanoke on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 1 p.m. at Everett Stadium. It will be Homecoming Weekend on the Hill.
