BOX SCORE

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. --
Senior quarterback and team captain Carter Sido (Dallas, TX) passed for a game-high 254 yards and one touchdown, and junior running back Terry Hicks (Clayton, NC) rushed for a game-high 126 yards and two touchdowns, but #21/24 Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 42-34 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football decision at home to Washington and Lee University on Saturday afternoon on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. The host Tigers (4-1, 2-1) trailed 14-7 after one quarter, 28-21 at halftime and 35-21 after three quarters, before a fourth quarter rally fell just short. The visiting Generals (2-3, 2-1) stopped the Garnet & Grey with an interception at the W&L five-yard line with 1:53 remaining and then ran out the clock for the road win.

H-SC, ranked 21st in this week's American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) D3 Coaches Poll, and 24th in the D3football.com Top 25, took the opening possession of the game and promptly drove 68 yards on six plays for the game's first touchdown. Sido connected with sophomore tight end Kam Mahoney (Bristow) on a 23-yard touchdown pass at 12:49, and freshman placekick Davis Dudley (Charlotte, NC) added the first of his four PAT kicks for the early 7-0 advantage. The early drive included runs of nine and 10 yards by Hicks, and completions of 10 and nine yards, respectively, to senior wide receiver and team captain Mason Cunningham (Arlington) and senior wide receiver Jordan Jackson (Fredericksburg).

W&L answered with three consecutive touchdowns, two in the first quarter, to lead 14-7 after one quarter and the third late in the second quarter for a 21-7 lead with 4:43 left until halftime. Ty Collins scored the first TD on a 14-yar run at 6:36 of the opening quarter, and Anthony Crawford added a one-yard TD run at :54-seconds, while Crawford scored again on another one-yard TD run at 9:27 of the second quarter. Marcus Gafford had the six PAT kicks for the Generals in the contest.

The Tigers made it a one-score game when senior running back Joseph Gonzalez (Spotsylvania) scored on a one-yard touchdown run with 3:40 on the clock, capping a 14-play, 75-yard drive that featured Hicks with 31 yards on the ground, an 11-yard completion to Jordan Jackson along with a 15-yard penalty against the visitors for a 21-14 contest.

The Generals answered right back with a 75-yard touchdown pass from Collins to Teddy Sparrow for a 28-14 lead at 3:40.

The Garnet & Grey responded, as well, as Hicks scored on a seven-yard touchdown run with 22-seconds on the clock for a 28-21 margin at halftime. It was an 11-play, 80-yard drive that included three penalties on W&L before a 37-yard completion to Jordan Jackson on fourth-and-11 to setup the scoring run, making it 28-21 at halftime.

W&L had the only touchdown of the third quarter when Crawford scored on a seven-yard run of his own at 9:34 and the margin was 35-21 into the fourth quarter.

H-SC got back on the board early in the final quarter when Hicks scored on a one-yard touchdown run at 14:05 to make it 35-28. The drive began at the end of the third quarter and included a 12-yard completion to sophomore wide receiver Manning Lasso (Raleigh, NC) and a 30-yard run by Hicks.

The Generals responded with a two-yard touchdown run by Crawford with 9:42 left to play and a 42-28 margin.

The Tigers answered right back when Gonzalez scored on a 19-yard touchdown run at 7:03, capping a quick nine-play, 75-yard drive that included a 13-yard run by Sido on third-and-10, an 11-yard completion to Mahoney and an 18-yard completion to Cunningham. The Garnet & Grey attempted a two-point conversion pass that appeared to be successful, but it was ruled that Lasso had stepped out of the back of the end zone before securing the catch from Sido, leaving the score at 42-34.

H-SC did get the stop it needed on defense, limiting W&L to one first down before forcing a punt, but a penalty on the return pushed the Tigers back to their own 13-yard line with 4:01 remaining. The Garnet & Grey did drive 72 yards on seven plays, including a 38-yard completion to Cunningham down to the Generals' 15 at the two-minute timeout. Unfortunately, an interception on the next play ended the possession without points and the visitors were able to run out the clock for the final margin.

Sido passed for his game-high 254 yards (20-32-1) and one touchdown for H-SC with one interception, adding 19 yards rushing on four attempts. Hicks rushed for his game-high 126 yards on 26 attempts and two touchdowns, and Gonzalez added 37 yards rushing on seven attempts and two touchdowns, along with 66 kick return yards (33.0). Cunningham had a game-high 116 yards receiving on seven receptions, Jordan Jackson had 75 yards receiving on six receptions and Mahoney had 34 yards receiving on two receptions and one touchdown.

Sophomore safety Mitch Ladamus (Fort Mill, SC) had a season-high and career-high 13 tackles for the Tigers. Senior safety and team captain Markevus Graves-Franklin (Lynchburg) had a season-high 12 tackles, and senior linebacker and team captain Robert Clarke (Atlanta, GA) had a season-high 11 tackles. Junior cornerback Cam Jackson (Alexandria) and sophomore linebacker Frank Brewer (Charlotte, NC) each had eight tackles with Cam Jackson adding a pass breakup, as well.

Ty Collins passed for 111 yards (3-4-0) and one touchdown for W&L, adding 70 yards rushing on 10 attempts and one touchdown. Crawford had 104 yards on 24 attempts and a game-high four touchdowns. Teddy Sparrow had 75 yards receiving on one reception and one touchdown. Brennan Stout had a game-high 14 tackles for the Generals.

H-SC will have a bye week next weekend before playing on the road in two weeks at ODAC opponent Averett University on Saturday, October 18, at 4 p.m. in Danville. Please note the later starting time against the Cougars.
