HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College welcomes Centre (KY) College in non-conference football action on Saturday afternoon, September 21, at 1 p.m. on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. The host Tigers are 1-1 overall, 0-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC), while the visiting Colonels are 2-0 overall, 0-0 in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA). The contest is part of a one year crossover scheduling agreement between the ODAC and the SAA. It's also Hall of Fame Weekend as the Class of 2024 will be inducted on Friday night, Sept. 20, and then recognized at halftime on Saturday. The game can be heard locally on WVHL Radio, Kickin' Country 92.9 FM, and will also be available worldwide on the Internet at wvhl.net or via the TuneIn Radio App, while available to watch as well on the Tiger Sports Network live video stream at hscathletics.com, pregame airing at 12:30 p.m.

H-SC took a 51-30 road win at Brevard (NC) on Sept. 14. The Tigers trailed 30-21 after three quarters, before scoring 30 unanswered points in the fourth quarter for their come-from-behind victory. Centre enjoyed a 17-14 home win past Maryville (TN) last week, getting a 32-yard game-winning field goal on the final play of the game.

Head Coach Vince Luvara
H-SC is led by the first-year head coach who took over the program on December 7, 2023. The former defensive coordinator at Washington & Jefferson (PA) College since 2016, Luvara becomes the 29th head coach in the 130-year history of the storied Hampden-Sydney program. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native is no stranger to NCAA Division III, having played four years at Allegheny (PA) College and coached one year at Allegheny and two years at Misericordia (PA) University—each school members of Division III.

The Series
H-SC leads the all-time series against Centre at 15-6-1, though the Colonels defeated the Tigers in the most recent meeting ... 51-41 in the first round of the NCAA Playoffs on November 19, 2011 in Danville, Kentucky. Prior to that game, H-SC had won seven of eight between 1969-92, and the Tigers are 9-1 against Centre at home.

Scouting The Tigers
Junior quarterback and team captain Carter Sido (Dallas, TX) has passed for 399 yards (34-55-2) and five touchdowns with two interceptions thrown in two games. He leads the ODAC in passing touchdowns, is second in passing yards, third in total offense (347), and sixth in completion percentage (61.8) and passing efficiency (145.5).

Sophomore running back Terry Hicks (Clayton, NC) has rushed for 237 yards on 43 attempts and three touchdowns, adding two receptions for eight yards. He leads the ODAC in rushing yards, is tied for first in rushing touchdowns, fourth in all-purpose yards (245) and seventh in total offense (237). Freshman running back Fain Barton (Atlanta, GA), who garnered honorable mention All-State honors at Class 4A Westminster in Atlanta, Georgia a year ago, has rushed for 102 yards on 21 attempts and two touchdowns. He is tied for fourth in the ODAC in rushing touchdowns, and is 11th in rushing yards.

Senior tight end Sutton Lasso (Raleigh, NC) has 10 receptions for 105 yards and one touchdown. He is third in the ODAC in receptions, tied for seventh in receiving touchdowns and ninth in receiving yards. Sophomore wide receiver Ethan Dowdy (Powhatan) has nine receptions for 118 yards and two touchdowns. He is tied for second in the ODAC in receiving touchdowns, fourth in receptions and sixth in receiving yards. Redshirt-freshman wide receiver Manning Lasso (Raleigh, NC) has eight receptions for 64 yards. He is tied for fifth in the ODAC in receptions and tied for 16th in receiving yards. Senior wide receiver Austin Fernandez (Warrenton) has four receptions for 101 yards. He 17th in the ODAC in receptions and 10th in receiving yards.

Senior free safety Joseph Pierre (Mobile, AL) has 15 tackles, including 0.5 for loss. He is tied for sixth in the ODAC in total tackles. Senior linebacker and team captain Brendan Wallace (Virginia Beach) has 14 tackles, including 4.0 for loss, and four sacks. He is tied for first in the ODAC in tackles for loss and sacks, and is tied for eighth in total tackles. Junior linebacker and team captain Robert Clarke (Atlanta, GA) has 13 tackles, including one for loss, and one fumble recovery. He is tied for first in the ODAC in fumble recoveries and tied for 12th in total tackles. Senior strong safety Seamus DeVol (Silver Spring, MD) has 12 tackles and one pass breakup. He is tied for 14th in the ODAC in total tackles. Junior nose tackle Andrew Arthur-Humphrey (Woodbridge) has 11 tackles, including one for loss. He is tied for 17th in the ODAC in total tackles. Junior cornerback James Townsend (Hardeeville, SC) has 10 tackles, including one for loss. He is tied for 25th in the ODAC in total tackles. Senior nickle back Kyle Lafayette (Charleston, SC) has one interception. He is tied for fifth in the ODAC in interceptions.

Senior placekicker Elijah Swett (Matthews, NC) is 8-8 on PAT kicks and 0-1 on field goal attempts. He has averaged 61.0 yards on 12 kickoffs (four-yard line) with one touchback. He is fifth in the ODAC in kick scoring points. Sophomore punter Camden Richardson (Richmond) has averaged 34.4 yards on eight punts, including a long of 50 yards, with one fair-caught and one downed inside the 20. Junior wide receiver Joseph Gonzalez (Spotsylvania) has averaged 18.6 yards on eight kick returns, including a long of 26 yards. He is sixth in the ODAC in kick return average.

Scouting The Colonels
Junior quarterback Jack Gohmann has passed for 381 yards (39-67-2) and four touchdowns with two interceptions thrown in two games, adding a team-best 32 yards rushing on 13 attempts. Senior running back Will McDaniel has rushed for 24 yards on 21 attempts, adding five receptions for 29 yards. Senior wide receiver Carter Chandler has seven receptions for 84 yards and two touchdowns. Junior wide receiver Blake Busson has six receptions for 95 yards. Senior wide receiver Scotty Brown has four receptions for 31 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore defensive back Mario Brewer Jr. has 13 total tackles, including 6.0 for loss, with six sacks, three pass breakups and one forced fumble. Senior linebacker Evan Elder has 10 total tackles, including 3.0 for loss, with one sack. Senior placekicker Cam Tegge is 5-5 on PAT kicks and 3-3 on field goal attempts. He has averaged 58.5 yards on six kickoffs (six-yard line) with two touchbacks. Sophomore punter Will Boehm has averaged 40.9 yards on seven punts, including a long of 51 yards, with one downed inside the 20.

100-Yard Rushing Games
Terry Hicks has two career games with 100-plus yards rushing, including two this season — a career-high and game-high 130 yards on a career-high 24 attempts and a career-high two touchdowns at Brevard (NC) (9/14), and a game-high 107 yards on 19 attempts and one touchdown in his first collegiate start vs. Delaware Valley (PA) (9/7).

100-Yard Rushing Games
Carter Sido has one career game with 100-plus yards rushing — a career-high 184 yards on 20 attempts and a career-high three touchdowns in his first collegiate start to open 2023 vs. Wabash (IN) in "The Gentlemen's Classic" (9/2/23). Carter was named the ODAC Offensive Player of the Week following that game a year ago, adding 153 yards passing and one touchdown, totaling a career-high 337 yards of total offense and four touchdowns ... believed to be a school record for single-game rushing yards by a quarterback.

250-Yard Passing Games
Carter Sido has one career game with 250-plus yards passing — a career-high 255 yards (19-27-1) and a career-high four touchdowns at Brevard (NC) (9/14).

100-Yard Receiving Games
Austin Fernandez has four career games with 100-plus yards receiving, including one in 2023 — 109 yards on four receptions and one touchdown at Greensboro (9/16/23). He had three 100-yard receiving games in 2022, including 134 yards on five receptions and one touchdown vs. Widener (9/10/22), 124 yards on seven receptions and one touchdown at Bridgewater (10/1/22) and a career-high 165 yards on eight receptions and one touchdown vs. Averett (10/15/22). Fernandez just missed on a fifth 100-yard receiving game with 99 yards on three receptions and a career-high two touchdowns at Brevard (NC) (9/14).

It's A First (X2)
Ethan Dowdy caught his first collegiate receiving touchdown in the season-opener vs. Delaware Valley (PA) (9/7) ... a 13-yard catch from Carter Sido in the third quarter. Fain Barton scored his first collegiate rushing touchdown in the season-opener vs. Delaware Valley (PA) (9/7) ... a two-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Hall of Fame Weekend
The 37th class for the Athletic Hall of Fame includes a pair of Football All-Americans and three-year teammates, Nash Nance '15 and Holton Walker '15, along with Special Citations for their head coach and the program's all-time winningest coach, Marty Favret, as well as former Tigers Dickie Cralle '65 and Bill Moore '78, the latter two long-time benefactors of the school and football program. This year's induction ceremony takes place on Friday, Sept. 20, at 6:30 p.m. in Snyder Hall at the Kirk Athletic Center. The five honorees will also be recognized at halftime of the football game on Saturday, Sept. 21.

Team Captains
Leading the Tigers are senior center Logan Cohn (Henrico) and senior linebacker Brendan Wallace, along with junior linebacker Robert Clarke, junior quarterback Carter Sido and junior right tackle William Stimmel (Atlanta, GA). All five are serving in the leadership roles for the first time. Logan is the son of Stefan and Heather Cohn. Brendan is the son of Jason and Kristiana Wallace. Robert is the son of Tom and Jill Clarke. Carter is the son of Chris Sido and Tova Sido. William is the son Carl and Claudia Stimmel.

William V. Campbell Trophy®
Senior defensive end Will Thomas (Blacksburg) is the program's nominee for the 2024 William V. Campbell Trophy®, college football's premier scholar-athlete award. He hopes to be the College's fifth-straight semifinalist, following in the footsteps of Tyler Howerton '21, Kaleb Smith '22, Michael Harris '23 and George Langhammer '24—Howerton went on to become one of 12 finalists for the prestigious award in 2020. Will is a Dean's List student majoring in English with a minor in Spanish and has attained a 3.40 GPA. He is the son of Eric Thomas and Anna LoMascolo.

Hampden-Sydney Football
H-SC has a 129 year history of football, amassing 579 wins since beginning in 1892. The Tigers have experienced great success over the years, including nine ODAC Championships, nine Mason-Dixon Conference Championships, seven NCAA Division III Championship appearances, 87 All-Americans, 16 Academic All-America selections and 222 First Team All-ODAC honorees. H-SC also played in the 1970 and 1971 Knute Rockne Bowls (NCAA College Division East Regional Championship).

From Division III To FBS Memphis
Ryan Silverfield '03 became the 25th head coach in the University of Memphis football history in December 2019 and began his tenure by leading the Tigers into their first major bowl game appearance: the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic in Dallas. He is currently 34-18 overall in his fifth season at the helm of the Tigers, including 3-0 in 2024. Silverfield led Memphis to a record of 10-3 in 2023, following a 7-6 season in 2022, after going 8-3 season in 2020, and the Tigers were 6-6 in 2021. Ryan coached four seasons as an undergraduate at H-SC, starting as an offensive assistant in 2000, serving as the defensive line coach during 2001 and 2002, before coaching the tight ends and H-backs in 2003.
