HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College, ranked No. 1 in the D3hoops.com Top 25, plays No. 13 Trine University in the 2024 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball National Championship on Saturday, March 16, at 4:06 p.m. at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The top-ranked Tigers are 31-2 overall following a 62-57 win past No. 7 Guilford in the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament on March 14 in Fort Wayne—making just their second national championship appearance in program history—the other in 1999 when the Tigers were National Runner-Up. The 13th-ranked Thunder are 28-4 overall after a 66-54 win past No. 3 Trinity (CT) in the other semifinal on March 14 at Memorial Coliseum. The contest can be heard locally on WVHL Radio, Kickin' Country 92.9 FM, and will also be available worldwide on the Internet at wvhl.net or via the TuneIn Radio App, while a livestream will be available to watch on cbssports.com.

The National Championship game will be televised on the digital cable and satellite CBS Sports Network (DIRECTV-221; DISH-158), though tape-delayed until 11 p.m. A livestream of the contest will be available at cbssports.com. Head Coach Caleb Kimbrough
H-SC is led by the fifth-year head coach who took over the program on April 4, 2019. The former head coach at Huntingdon (AL) College from 2016-19, Kimbrough is the 19th head coach in the 114-year history of the storied Hampden-Sydney program. He is no stranger to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC), having played four years at Guilford and coached six years with the Quakers, and one year at Washington and Lee. Kimbrough is 83-37 overall at the College, including 45-23 in ODAC games. Caleb is a two-time National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division III District 6 Coach of the Year (2023-24; 2022-23), and was the ODAC Men's Basketball Bob Johnson Coach of the Year last year, as well.

Scouting No. 1 Hampden-Sydney
The 2024 ODAC Tournament Champions have 12-straight wins and 26 wins in their last 27 games overall. H-SC has attained a new school record for wins (31), and is enjoying its finest season in 25 years when the 1998-99 Tigers also advanced to the National Championship. The Garnet & Grey previously won their record-11th ODAC Tournament title on February 25, while playing in their record-16th ODAC championship game. H-SC has attained its first 30-win season and only its sixth 25-win season in program history, while the 17th overall 20-win season, also the second consecutive 20-win campaign to mark the first time since 2002-03 (28-4) and 2003-04 (25-5) with back-to-back 20-win seasons.

The Tigers are extremely balanced offensively with three players averaging in double-figure scoring among its five starters that are each scoring at least 6.2 points per game, while seven are playing 14-plus minutes among 10 playing nine-plus minutes per game. H-SC has been led by Second Team All-American senior forward Davidson Hubbard (Charlotte, NC) with his 15.1 points (47 3FGs) and 7.2 rebounds, Third Team All-American senior guard and team captain Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) with his 13.2 points (71 3FGs) and 3.8 assists, along with fifth-year guard Ryan Clements (Conyers, GA) with his 10.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.8 steals. Joining them in the lineup have been senior guard/forward and team captain Josiah Hardy (Ashburn) (7.5 points, 4.5 rebounds) and senior guard Alex Elliott (Marietta, GA) (6.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, 30 3FGs). Fifth-year guard Chase Turner (Virginia Beach) (4.4 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.1 assists), sophomore forward Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC) (5.0 points, 58% FG) and fifth-year forward and team captain Miles Harris (Virginia Beach) (3.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, 29 3FGs) have provided solid depth.

H-SC is shooting 46% (924-2003) from the field, including 35% (254-719) on three-point field goals (7.7 per game), and 74% (364-489) at the free throw line. The Tigers have averaged 74.7 points, and allowed only 58.2 points, for an impressive +16.5 scoring margin.

Scouting No. 13 Trine
The Thunder, who received a Pool C at-large invitation, are coached by 13th-year head coach Brooks Miller. TU has been led by senior guard Cortez Garland with his 16.0 points (39 3FGs) and 2.1 steals, and junior guard Fred Garland with his 13.9 points and 3.3 assists, along with junior guard Aidan Smylie (11.1 points, 6.6 rebounds, 51 3FGs) and senior forward Brent Cox (10.2 points). The Thunder shoot 48% (951-1970) from the field, including 33% (172-520) on three-pointers, and 72% (476-665) at the line; scoring 79.7 points, and yielding 68.2 points for a +11.5 scoring margin.

Davidson Hubbard scored 11 of his game-high 16 points over the final 5:36 to lead No. 1 H-SC to a 62-57 come-from-behind win past No. 7 GC in the semifinals of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship on March 14 at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Ryan Clements and Shane Fernald (off the bench) each finished with 10 points for the Tigers, who trailed 30-29 at halftime and 47-40 with under seven minutes remaining, before scoring 10 unanswered points that began a game-changing 17-2 run toward outscoring the Quakers 22-10 over the final 6:34.

Tigers Rolling
H-SC has won 12 consecutive games since dropping a 48-46 decision at home to then-No. 8 Randolph-Macon on Feb. 3. The average margin has been 18.0 points, including four by 24 or more points, and only two by less than 10 points. The Tigers won their first four NCAA Tournament games by an average of 20.3 points, including 98-61 past La Roche (PA) on March 1, 72-51 past (RV)Farmingdale State (NY) on March 2, 91-76 past Rowan (NJ) on March 8 and 68-60 past No. 19 Nebraska Wesleyan on March 9.

What An NCAA Tournament Debut
Shane Fernald has averaged 10.4 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.4 assists off the bench while playing in his first five career NCAA Tournament games. The 6-7, 260-pound forward is 24-36 from the field (67%) during his 78 minutes (15.6) of total playing time, including a career-high 15 points (7-10 FGs, 1-1 FTs), along with three assists, two rebounds and one steal in 17 minutes against Rowan.

2023-24 NABC Honors
Davidson Hubbard was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division III All-America Second Team, and Adam Brazil was named to the Division III All-America Third Team, as announced on March 13. It's the first time in program history with two All-Americans in the same season. Hubbard and Brazil were also named to the All-District 6 First Team—Hubbard was Second Team in 2022-23, while Caleb Kimbrough was named the NABC District 6 Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season, as announced on March 12.

NCAA Tournament History
H-SC is making its 16th overall NCAA Tournament appearance since 1989, winning at least one game in 13 of the 16 years, while compiling an NCAA Tournament record of 25-16. The Tigers were National Runners-Up in 1999, falling to UW-Platteville 76-75 in double-overtime in the National Championship contest, and the Garnet & Grey advanced to the Final Four in 2003, falling to Gustavus Adolphus (MN) 79-68 in the National Semifinals, before falling to Wooster (OH) 78-74 in the third-place game. H-SC also advanced to the Elite Eight in 1995, while reaching the Sweet 16 in 1992, 1994 and 1998. The Tigers have hosted 22 NCAA Tournament games since 1992, compiling an impressive 17-5 record.

2024 ODAC Tournament Honors
Adam Brazil was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2024 ODAC Tournament after averaging 17.3 points (9 3FGs), 6.0 rebounds and 4.3 assists in three games. He was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Davidson Hubbard (18.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, 7 3FGs, 5 blocks) and Josiah Hardy (11.7 points, 5.7 rebounds, 64% FGs).

2023-24 All-ODAC Honors
Davidson Hubbard and Adam Brazil were each named First Team All-ODAC, while Ryan Clements was named Third Team All-ODAC, as announced on Feb. 21. Clements was named All-ODAC for the third time—also Third Team in 2022-23 and Second Team in 2021-22, while Hubbard and Brazil were named All-ODAC for the second time—Hubbard was also First Team in 2022-23, and Brazil was Second Team last year.

2023-24 ODAC Scholar-Athlete Award
Adam Brazil garnered ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors from the league's athletic communications personnel. Adam is an English major and Dean's List student with a 3.81 GPA, while a three-time member of the ODAC All-Academic Team (2021-23).

100 Collegiate Coaching Wins
Caleb Kimbrough won his 100th game as a collegiate head coach with a 71-47 road win at Virginia Wesleyan on Feb. 14. Coach Kimbrough is currently 109-77 in eight years, including 83-37 in five seasons at H-SC.

It's A Team Game: Unselfish Tigers
H-SC has had seven different student-athletes lead the team in scoring this season ... seven different team members lead the squad in rebounding ... and eight different players lead the team in assists. The Tigers have been led in scoring at times by Davidson Hubbard (13), Adam Brazil (10), Ryan Clements (6), Alex Elliott (1), Josiah Hardy (1), Miles Harris (1) and Ayman McGowan (1). The Garnet & Grey have been led in rebounding at times by Hubbard (19), Hardy (5), Clements (4), Elliott (4), Harris (2), Chase Turner (2) and Shane Fernald (1). H-SC has been led in assists at times by Brazil (17), Clements (14), Turner (5), Fernald (3), Hubbard (2), Elliott (1), Davis Cauble (1) and DJ Wright (1).

NCAA Division III Statistics
Prior to the National Semifinals, H-SC ranked second nationally in winning percentage (.938), fifth in both scoring defense (58.2) and scoring margin (16.9), eighth in both field goal percentage defense (37.9) and assist/turnover ratio (1.53), 10th in rebound margin (8.7), 25th in fewest turnovers (10.6), 35th in turnover margin (3.4), 48th in free throw percentage (74.6) and 50th in assists per game (16.1). Adam Brazil ranked 15th in NCAA Division III assist/turnover ratio (2.88).

H-SC was a unanimous No. 1 in the final regular season D3hoops.com Top 25 (Feb. 26), earning all 25 first-place votes and 625 points in the poll. It marked the second consecutive and seventh week this season at No. 1, while the Tigers were ranked among the top five nationally for 10 of 12 weeks during 2023-24.

Career Watch: Three 1,000 Point Scorers
Ryan Clements ranks ninth in career scoring at H-SC with 1,460 career points in 120 career games. Davidson Hubbard ranks 27th with 1,179 career points in 91 career games. Adam Brazil ranks 43rd with 1,035 career points in 92 career games. Russell Turner '92 is the all-time leader with 2,272 career points. Clements also ranks fourth in career steals with 202. Ralph Baker '89 is the all-time leader with 258 career steals. Clements ranks sixth in career assists, as well, with 374. Mike Murray '15 is the all-time leader with 433 career assists. Hubbard also ranks eighth in career blocks with 58. Miles Harris ranks 14th in career blocks with 42. Mike Thompson '04 is the all-time leader with 136 career blocks.

The Team Three-Point Stat
H-SC has made at least one three-point field goal in 492 consecutive games, dating back to a home game vs. Emory & Henry on Dec. 3, 2005 (0-1 3FGA). Ironically, the Tigers won that high-scoring contest 130-99. H-SC made a season-high 17 three-pointers vs. Rose-Hulman (IN) on Nov. 18 (17-36 3FGs), one of four games this season with 10-plus three-pointers.

Program History
H-SC is competing in its 114th-year of basketball during 2023-24. The Tigers began this season with an overall record of 1486-1093 since beginning in 1908, and currently are 1517-1095. H-SC has posted 63 winning seasons, 17 seasons with at least 20 wins, six seasons with at least 25 wins, has won a record 11 ODAC Tournament Championships and is making its 16th NCAA Division III Tournament appearance. The Tigers have advanced to the Final Four three times, and to the National Championship twice.

2023-24 Team Captains
Leading the Tigers are fifth-year Miles Harris, along with seniors Adam Brazil and Josiah Hardy. Harris and Brazil are each serving in the leadership role for their second season, while Hardy is a first-year captain. Miles is the son of Randy Harris and Corey Bacs and is majoring in economics and business. Adam is the son of Mark and Kristen Brazil and is majoring in English. Josiah is the son of Vernal Hardy and Felicia Miller and is majoring in economics and business.

Three Former Tigers Are Division I Head Coaches
H-SC currently has three former basketball team members and graduates of the College that are serving as NCAA Division I head coaches. Russell Turner '92 is in his 14th year at UC Irvine ... Ryan Odom '96 is in his first season at VCU and his eighth season as a DI head coach (UMBC, Utah State) ... Griff Aldrich '96 is in his sixth year at Longwood. Through March 10, Turner was 289-178 at UCI (24-8 this season) ... Odom was 160-97 overall, including 19-12 at VCU this season, 44-25 in two years at USU and 97-60 in five years at UMBC ... Aldrich was 109-85 at Longwood (21-13 this season) and led the Lancers to their second Big South Tournament Championship on March 10 for automatic qualification to the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship.

It Would Be The First
Hampden-Sydney College has never won a National Championship in any sport. The Tigers have been national runner-up three times, including men's golf in both 1975 and 2022, along with men's basketball in 1999.
