HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College plays its first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football game of the season at home against Bridgewater College on Saturday afternoon, September 30, at 1 p.m. on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. The host Tigers are 2-1 overall, 0-0 in the ODAC, while the visiting Eagles are also 2-1 overall, 0-0 in the ODAC. The game can be heard locally on WVHL Radio, Kickin' Country 92.9 FM, and will also be available worldwide on the Internet at wvhl.net or via the TuneIn Radio App, while available to watch as well on the Tiger Sports Network live video stream at hscathletics.com, pregame airing at 12:30 p.m.

Coach To Cure MD
It's the Coach To Cure MD game, a partnership between the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD), the largest national charity devoted exclusively to Duchenne muscular dystrophy (Duchenne) ... to raise national awareness of the disorder and to raise money to fund research for a cure. Colin Werth received a diagnosis of Duchenne in 1998 and is a lifelong fan of the Tigers, having grown-up on campus. He is the son of Dr. Alex Werth, Patterson Professor of Biology, who has taught at the College for over 30 years. Colin will participate in the coin toss for Saturday's contest.

Last Week
H-SC took a 58-28 non-conference road win at Greensboro College on Sept. 16 in North Carolina, leading 9-0 after one quarter, 36-7 at halftime, and 49-14 after three quarters en route to the victory. BC took a 41-12 non-conference home win past North Carolina Wesleyan on Sept. 16.

Favret Coaching Final Season
H-SC head coach Marty Favret, the all-time winningest coach in program history, announced on August 20 that 2023 will be his final season of coaching. In 23-plus seasons at the College, he has attained 147 victories (147-87) and led the Tigers to 15 winning seasons with five ODAC Championships (2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014) and six NCAA Division III Football Championship appearances (2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014). Favret is currently the longest-tenured collegiate football head coach in Virginia.

The Series
H-SC leads the overall series against BC 61-17, including a 31-15 advantage in ODAC games. The Tigers have won 11 of the last 15 games played between the two programs, though the Eagles won last season in Bridgewater, 27-17. H-SC is 11-11 against BC under the direction of Coach Favret, including a 24-14 home win the last time the two met at Everett Stadium in 2021. The Tigers and BC first met on the gridiron in 1929, a 38-0 road win for the Garnet & Grey.

Scouting The Tigers
Senior quarterback Andrew Puccinelli (Glen Allen) has passed for 438 yards (35-48-0) and four touchdowns with no interceptions this season, adding one rushing touchdown. Puccinelli made his first start of the season at Greensboro on Sept. 16 and passed for a career-high 368 yards (30-42) and three touchdowns with no interceptions, adding the rushing touchdown, as well.

Senior running back Melik Frost (Hardeeville, SC) has rushed for 205 yards on 57 attempts and two touchdowns, adding five receptions for 28 yards.

Sophomore wide receiver Mason Cunningham (Arlington) has 18 receptions for 199 yards and one touchdown. Senior wide receiver Jamahdia Whitby (Williamsburg) has 14 receptions for 166 yards and two touchdowns, adding 46 yards rushing on two attempts. Junior wide receiver Austin Fernandez (Warrenton) has 12 receptions for 196 yards and one touchdown.

Senior safety James-Ryan Salvi (Troutville) has 25 total tackles, including eight solo, and 1.5 tackles for loss. Senior linebacker Dorian Green (Martinsville) has 23 total tackles, including eight solo, two tackles for loss, 0.5 sacks and one quarterback hurry. Senior All-American safety and team captain Will Pickren (Mount Pleasant, SC) has 22 total tackles, including nine solo, one tackle for loss, two interceptions, two pass breakups, one fumble return for a touchdown and one blocked punt. Senior cornerback Tobias Lafayette (Charleston, SC) and freshman linebacker Harrison Wood (Richmond) each have 16 total tackles ... including 10 solo, one tackle for loss and four pass breakups by Lafayette ... and six solo, 2.5 tackles for loss and one sack by Wood.

Sophomore placekicker Elijah Swett (Matthews, NC) is 12-15 on PAT kicks and is 3-4 on field goals, including a season-long of 41 yards. Swett has averaged 58.9 yards on 20 kickoffs (six-yard line) with three touchbacks.

Senior punter George Langhammer (Roanoke) has averaged 29.3 yards on just four punts, including a long of 47 yards.

Sophomore wide receiver Joseph Gonzalez (Spotsylvania) has averaged 27.5 yards on two kick returns, including a long of 28 yards. Senior cornerback Brice Wilson (Charlottesville) has averaged 9.3 yards on three kick returns, including a long of 13 yards. Mason Cunningham has averaged 4.3 yards on three punt returns, including a long of seven yards.

Scouting The Eagles
Freshman quarterback Jaicere Bateman has passed for 303 yards (35-52-2) with two interceptions, while graduate quarterback Malcolm Anderson has passed for 260 yards (18-31-0) and four touchdowns with no interceptions—adding one rushing touchdown. Junior running back Kennedy Fauntleroy has rushed for 336 yards on 51 attempts and four touchdowns. Sophomore wide receiver Ian Browne has 11 receptions for 136 yards and two touchdowns, while junior wide receiver Cedric Drumgoole has eight receptions for 151 yards and one touchdown. Sophomore linebacker Aaron Nice has 33 total tackles, including 21 solo, six tackles for loss, one sack, one fumble recovery and one quarterback hurry. Redshirt-senior cornerback Aaron Moore has 16 total tackles, including eight solo, one tackle for loss, one interception and one pass breakup. Senior linebacker TJ Lowery has 15 total tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss and one quarterback hurry. Junior placekicker Jackson Hendren is 12-13 on PAT kicks and is 1-3 on field goals, including a season-long of 39 yards. Hendren has averaged 57.2 yards on 19 kickoffs (eight-yard line) with three touchbacks. Junior punter Alex Solorzano has averaged 24.8 yards on nine punts, including a long of 44 yards, with six fair-caught and one inside the 20. Sophomore defensive back Brendan Robinson has averaged 28.4 yards on 11 kick returns, including a long of 82 yards and one touchdown.

Among the ODAC Leaders
Andrew Puccinelli leads the ODAC in passing yards per game (219.0), passing efficiency (177.1) and completion percentage (72.9), is second in total offense per game (219.0) and tied for fourth in passing touchdowns (4).

Sophomore quarterback Carter Sido (Dallas, TX), currently out with an injury, leads the ODAC in total offense per game (257.0), is second in rushing yards per game (105.0), third in passing efficiency (136.3), completion percentage (62.5), all-purpose yards per game (105.0) and points per game (9.0), fourth in passing yards per game (152.0), sixth in passing touchdowns (3) and tied for sixth in rushing touchdowns (3).

Mason Cunningham leads the ODAC in receptions (18), is second in receiving yards per game (66.3), fourth in punt return average (4.3) and tied for eighth in receiving touchdowns (1).

Will Pickren has the ODAC's only fumble return for a touchdown, is tied for second in interceptions (2) and passes defended (4), and eighth in total tackles (22).

Tobias Lafayette is second in the ODAC in pass breakups (4) and tied for second in passes defended (4).

Elijah Swett is tied for second in the ODAC in field goals (3), third in kick scoring points per game (7.0) and 10th in points per game (7.0).

Austin Fernandez is third in the ODAC in receiving yards per game (65.3), tied for fifth in receptions (12) and tied for eighth in receiving touchdowns (1).

Joseph Gonzalez is third in the ODAC in kick return average (27.5).

Sophomore cornerback James Townsend (Hardeeville, SC) is tied for third in the ODAC in fumbles forced (1) and fumbles recovered (1).

Junior defensive end Brendan Wallace (Virginia Beach) is tied for third in the ODAC in fumbles forced (1) and tied for ninth in sacks (1.5).

Jamahdia Whitby is tied for third in the ODAC in receiving touchdowns (2), fourth in receptions (14) and fifth in receiving yards per game (55.3).

James-Ryan Salvi is fifth in the ODAC in total tackles (25).

Sophomore safety Jaylan Long (Martinsville) is tied for fifth in the ODAC in interceptions (1).

Dorian Green is tied for sixth in the ODAC in total tackles (23).

Junior tight end Sutton Lasso (Raleigh, NC) is tied for eighth in the ODAC in receiving touchdowns (1).

Melik Frost is tied for ninth in the ODAC in rushing touchdowns (2) and 10th in rushing yards per game (68.3).

ODAC Offensive Player of the Week
Andrew Puccinelli was named the ODAC Football Offensive Player of the Week for week three of the 2023 season. He passed for a game-high and career-high 368 yards (30-42-0) and three touchdowns with no interceptions, adding one rushing touchdown, while making his first start of the season during a 58-28 road win at non-conference opponent Greensboro (9/16). He scored on a one-yard touchdown run at 10:37 of the first quarter, and then connected with Austin Fernandez on a 67-yard touchdown pass at 5:27 of the second quarter, before adding two third-quarter touchdown passes … an eight-yard touchdown pass to Jamahdia Whitby at 4:55 and a four-yard touchdown pass to JT Diehl at 1:33.

It's A First (X5)
Sutton Lasso caught his first collegiate receiving touchdown in the season-opener vs. Wabash (9/2) ... a 16-yard catch from Carter Sido in the second quarter. Sophomore running back Markevus Graves-Franklin (Lynchburg) caught his first collegiate receiving touchdown vs. Brevard (9/9) ... a two-yard catch from Carter Sido in the first quarter—Graves-Franklin scored his first collegiate rushing touchdown at Greensboro (9/16) ... a six-yard run in the second quarter. Will Pickren scored his first collegiate touchdown at Greensboro (9/16) ... a 33-yard fumble return in the second quarter. Junior running back JT Diehl (Warrenton) caught his first collegiate receiving touchdown at Greensboro (9/16) ... a four-yard catch from Andrew Puccinelli in the third quarter. Freshman running back Terry Hicks (Clayton, NC) scored his first collegiate rushing touchdown at Greensboro (9/16) ... a 24-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Career Watch: Will Pickren
The 2022 First Team AP Division III All-American and three-time First Team All-ODAC safety currently totals 289 career tackles, and now needs just 56 to equal and 57 to surpass and become the school's all-time leader in tackles. Brendan Weinberg '22 is the current career leader in tackles with 345.

Career Watch: Melik Frost
The 2022 Third Team D3football.com All-Region 3 and First Team All-ODAC running back currently totals 1,464 career rushing yards and 19 career rushing touchdowns, adding 296 career receiving yards and one career receiving touchdown — totaling 1,760 career all-purpose yards and 20 career total touchdowns.

300-Yard Passing Games
Andrew Puccinelli has two career 300-yard passing games, including 305 yards (28-33-2) and a career-high four touchdowns vs. Greensboro (9/17/22) in his first collegiate start ... and a career-high 368 yards (30-42-0) and three touchdowns at Greensboro (9/16) in his first start of this season, and second of his career.

100-Yard Receiving Game
Jamahdia Whitby had the first 100-yard receiving game of his collegiate career with a game-high and career-high 123 yards on a game-high and career-high eight receptions and one touchdown at Greensboro (9/16). His size, speed and athleticism has drawn interest from several National Football League (NFL) teams this fall.

William V. Campbell Trophy®
George Langhammer was named a semifinalist for the 2023 William V. Campbell Trophy®, college football's premier scholar-athlete award, as announced on Sept. 27 by the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF). He was among a record number of 201 semifinalists from all divisions, while one of only two from the ODAC and 48 selected from Division III. Langhammer is the College's fourth consecutive semifinalist, following Tyler Howerton '21, Kaleb Smith '22 and Michael Harris '23—Howerton went on to become one of 12 finalists for the prestigious award in 2020. George is a six-time Dean's List student majoring in foreign affairs with a minor in Spanish and has attained a 3.91 GPA.

Team Captains
Leading the Tigers are senior offensive tackle TJ Minter (Chester), Will Pickren, James-Ryan Salvi and senior defensive end Tramell Thompson (Queens, NY). Minter becomes a two-time team captain after serving in the leadership role last season, as well, while Pickren, Salvi and Thompson are each first-time team captains. TJ is the son of the late Tony Minter and Catherine Minter. Will is the son of Wilson and Renee Pickren. James-Ryan is the son of Ryan and Denise Salvi. Tramell is the son of Chelsea Thompson.

Hampden-Sydney Football
H-SC has a 128-year history of football, amassing 573 wins since beginning in 1892. The Tigers have experienced great success over the years, including nine ODAC Championships, nine Mason-Dixon Conference Championships, seven NCAA Division III Championship appearances, 86 All-Americans, 16 Academic All-America selections and 214 First Team All-ODAC honorees. H-SC also played in the 1970 and 1971 Knute Rockne Bowls (NCAA College Division East Regional Championship).
