HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College senior punter
George Langhammer (Roanoke) has been named a semifinalist for the
2023 William V. Campbell Trophy®,
college football's premier scholar-athlete award, as announced today by the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF). Langhammer is among a record number of 201 semifinalists from all divisions, while one of only two from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) and 48 selected from NCAA Division III—the new highwater mark eclipses the 199 nominees in 2000.
Celebrating its 34th year, the Campbell Trophy® recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership. George is the College's fourth consecutive semifinalist, following
Tyler Howerton '21,
Kaleb Smith '22 and
Michael Harris '23—Howerton went on to become one of 12 finalists for the prestigious award in 2020.
George Langhammer is a six-time Dean's List honoree (every semester) majoring in foreign affairs with a minor in Spanish and has attained a 3.91 GPA. He is an H-SC Cushing Scholar (Freshman), H-SC Eagle Scout Scholar (Citizen-Leader, Freshman), The Institute of World Politics Summer Fellow, and a recipient of the H-SC Award of Excellence in Rhetoric (Best Rhetoric 101 Essay) and the H-SC Friend Award (Rising Senior for his ability to lead quietly, skill for bringing out the best in others, and exemplifies characteristics of honor, dignity, and generosity). Langhammer is a member of the Honor Court, Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa, Kappa Alpha Order, The Alexander Hamilton Society, The Wilson Center for Leadership in The Public Interest, and The Society for Collegiate Journalists. George's leadership roles including being a Senior Rhetoric tutor, three-year member of the Honor Court, Section Editor for the student newspaper, founding member and former President of Phi Alpha Delta-Professional Law Fraternity, Orientation and Service Leader, and a tour guide for the Office of Admission. His community involvement includes weekly mentoring of a local elementary school student, one semester shadowing in our local hospital, and he participates in volunteer service projects through his fraternity, football team, and The Office of Student Affairs.
Playing in 21 career games, Langhammer entered his final season with a 40.1-yard career punting average on 53 career punts with six career punts over 50 yards, including a career long of 67 yards, along with 11 career punts downed inside the 20 and 17 career punts fair caught; adding two career solo tackles. A three-time ODAC All-Academic Team honoree, he was also named to the 2022 College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District® Football Team. Langhammer has averaged 29.3 yards on just four punts this season, including a long of 47 yards. George is the son of John Langhammer and Carole Agee.
The NFF will announce 12-14 finalists on October 25, and each of them will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the 2023 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class Presented by Fidelity Investments. The finalists will travel to the ARIA Resort & Casino in Las Vegas for the 65th NFF Annual Awards Dinner Presented by Las Vegas on December 5, where their accomplishments will be highlighted in front of one of the most powerful audiences in all of sports. Live during the event, one member of the class will be declared as the winner of the 34th Campbell Trophy® and have his postgraduate scholarship increased to $25,000.
