Hampden-Sydney Plays On The Road At Guilford (NC) On Saturday At 1 p.m.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College plays on the road at Guilford College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football action on Saturday afternoon, October 28, at 1 p.m. in Greensboro, North Carolina. The visiting Tigers are 4-3 overall, 2-2 in the ODAC, while the host Quakers are 2-5 overall, 0-4 in the ODAC. The game can be heard locally on WVHL Radio, Kickin' Country 92.9 FM, pregame airing at 12:30 p.m., and will also be available worldwide on the Internet at wvhl.net or via the TuneIn Radio App, while available to watch as well on the Guilford Sports Network.

Last Week
H-SC dropped a disappointing 21-17 ODAC decision at home to Washington and Lee University on Oct. 21 on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. The Tigers led 14-0 after one quarter, were ahead 14-7 at halftime, and 17-14 after three quarters, before the visiting Generals scored a late touchdown—a 24-yard scoring run with 5:04 remaining—for the important conference road win during Homecoming Weekend on the Hill. GC suffered a 28-0 shutout loss on the road at ODAC member Ferrum College a week ago.

Favret Coaching Final Season
H-SC head coach Marty Favret, the all-time winningest coach in program history, announced on August 20 that 2023 will be his final season of coaching. In 23-plus seasons at the College, he has attained 149 victories (149-89) and led the Tigers to 15 winning seasons with five ODAC Championships (2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014) and six NCAA Division III Football Championship appearances (2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014). Favret is currently the longest-tenured collegiate football head coach in Virginia.

The Series
H-SC leads the overall series against GC, 47-23. The Tigers have won 21 of the last 23 games played against the Quakers since Coach Favret took over prior to the 2000 season, including a 28-21 home win last Oct. 29, 2022. H-SC and GC first met on the gridiron in 1920, and the Tigers are 25-7 against the Quakers since they joined the ODAC in 1991.

Scouting The Tigers
Senior quarterback Andrew Puccinelli (Glen Allen) has passed for 1,774 yards (137-198-1) and 17 touchdowns with only one interception thrown in six games, adding one rushing touchdown.

Senior running back Melik Frost (Hardeeville, SC) has rushed for 528 yards on 130 attempts and five touchdowns, adding 11 receptions for 106 yards and one touchdown receiving.

Sophomore wide receiver Mason Cunningham (Arlington) has 51 receptions for 624 yards and six touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Jamahdia Whitby (Williamsburg) has 38 receptions for 367 yards and three touchdowns. Junior wide receiver Austin Fernandez (Warrenton) has 30 receptions for 420 yards and three touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Braeden Bowling (Cary, NC) has 19 receptions for 347 yards and four touchdowns.

Senior All-American safety and team captain Will Pickren (Mount Pleasant, SC) has 66 total tackles, including 19 solo, 1.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions, three pass breakups, one fumble recovery/return for a touchdown and one blocked kick (punt). Senior linebacker Dorian Green (Martinsville) has 53 total tackles, including 17 solo, 3.5 tackles for loss (1.5 sacks) and one forced fumble. Senior safety and team captain James-Ryan Salvi (Troutville) has 49 total tackles, including 14 solo, 1.5 tackles for loss, one interception and one pass breakup. Junior linebacker Jackson Lott (Norfolk) has 43 total tackles, including two tackles for loss (1.5 sacks). Sophomore safety Jaylan Long (Martinsville) and freshman linebacker Harrison Wood (Richmond) each have 32 total tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss and two interceptions by Long, and three tackles for loss (1.5 sacks) by Wood. Senior defensive end and team captain Tramell Thompson (Queens, NY) has 31 total tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss (1.5 sacks).

Sophomore placekicker Elijah Swett (Matthews, NC) is 29-33 (88%) on PAT kicks and 6-10 (60%) on field goals, including a season-long of 41 yards, and three blocked. Swett has averaged 57.3 yards on 41 kickoffs (eight-yard line) with three touchbacks. Senior punter George Langhammer (Roanoke) has averaged 38.7 yards on 15 punts, including a long of 50 yards, with two fair-caught and two downed inside the 20.

Sophomore wide receiver Joseph Gonzalez (Spotsylvania) has averaged 25.8 yards on 14 kick returns, including a long of 91 yards, and one touchdown. Mason Cunningham has averaged 3.6 yards on seven punt returns, including a long of seven yards.

Scouting The Quakers
Fifth-year quarterback Bailey Baker has passed for 999 yards (76-151-6) and 11 touchdowns with six interceptions thrown in six games, adding two rushing touchdowns. Senior running back Joseph Brown Jr. has rushed for 245 yards on 57 attempts and three touchdowns. Freshman running back Malik Woodard has rushed for 217 yards on 64 attempts and one touchdown. Junior wide receiver JuJu Rice has 20 receptions for 263 yards and four touchdowns. Sophomore wide receiver Messiah Ramseur has 14 receptions for 220 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore linebacker Nick Iannone has 72 total tackles, including 32 solo, five tackles for loss (two sacks), one interception and one forced fumble. Fifth-year cornerback Adam Lacy has 60 total tackles, including 39 solo, two interceptions, one pass breakup and one blocked kick. Senior placekicker Burke Nettles is 14-17 (82%) on PAT kicks and 4-8 (50%) on field goals, including a season-long of 43 yards. He has averaged 61.4 yards on 30 kickoffs (four-yard line) with nine touchbacks, and has also averaged 42.3 yards on 29 punts, including a long of 74 yards, with eight fair-caught and seven downs inside the 20. Freshman wide receiver Jay Daniels has averaged 19.7 yards on 26 kick returns, including a long of 44 yards, and has averaged 3.3 yards on three punt returns, including a long of eight yards.

Among the ODAC & National Leaders
Andrew Puccinelli leads the ODAC in passing yards (1,774), passing yards per game (295.7), passing touchdowns (17) and total offense per game (284.5), and is second in passing efficiency (171.8) and completion percentage (69.2). He ranks 13th in NCAA Division III in passing yards per game, 18th in passing efficiency, 19th in completions per game (22.8) and completion percentage, and 27th in yards per pass attempt (9.0).

Mason Cunningham leads the ODAC in receptions (51), receptions per game (7.3), receiving yards (624) and receiving yards per game (89.1), second in receiving touchdowns (6) and fourth in all-purpose yards per game (94.1). He ranks 15th in Division III receptions per game.

Will Pickren has one of just two fumble returns for a touchdown in the ODAC, is fourth in total tackles (66) and tackles per game (9.4), and tied for fifth in interceptions (2).

Joseph Gonzalez has one of only three kickoff returns for a touchdown in the ODAC, and is third in kick return average (25.8). He is tied for fourth in Division III in kickoff return touchdowns (1) and 23rd in kick return average.

Jamahdia Whitby is second in the ODAC in receptions (38) and receptions per game (5.4), and fifth in receiving yards (367) and receiving yards per game (52.4).

Elijah Swett is second in the ODAC in kick scoring points (47) and points per game (6.7), and tied for second in field goals (6).

Austin Fernandez is third in the ODAC in receptions (30) and receptions per game (4.3), and fourth in receiving yards (420) and receiving yards per game (60.0).

George Langhammer is third in the ODAC in punting average (38.7).

Melik Frost is fourth in the ODAC in rushing yards (528) and rushing yards per game (75.4).

Braeden Bowling is tied for fifth in the ODAC in receiving touchdowns (4).

Senior cornerback Tobias Lafayette (Charleston, SC) is tied for fifth in the ODAC in pass breakups (6) and passes defended (6).

Jaylan Long is tied for fifth in the ODAC in interceptions (2).

Record Watch
2022 First Team AP Division III All-American and three-time First Team All-ODAC safety Will Pickren currently totals 333 career tackles, and now needs just 12 to equal and 13 to surpass and become the school's all-time leader in tackles. Brendan Weinberg '22 is the current career leader in tackles with 345.

Oh So Close ...
H-SC opponents have converted two game-winning, two-point PAT attempts following touchdowns in the final minutes of the two one-point setbacks this season. Wabash (5-2) scored with 2:02 on the clock and converted a trick-play pass for its 29-28 road win on Sept. 2, while Bridgewater (5-2) scored with just 23-seconds remaining and converted a run for its 39-38 road win on Sept. 30.

William V. Campbell Trophy®
George Langhammer was named a semifinalist for the 2023 William V. Campbell Trophy®, college football's premier scholar-athlete award, as announced on Sept. 27 by the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF). He was among a record number of 201 semifinalists from all divisions, while one of only two from the ODAC and 48 selected from Division III. Langhammer is the College's fourth consecutive semifinalist, following Tyler Howerton '21, Kaleb Smith '22 and Michael Harris '23—Howerton went on to become one of 12 finalists for the prestigious award in 2020. George is a six-time Dean's List student majoring in foreign affairs with a minor in Spanish and has attained a 3.91 GPA.

Team Captains
Leading the Tigers are senior offensive tackle TJ Minter (Chester), Will Pickren, James-Ryan Salvi and Tramell Thompson. Minter is a two-time team captain after serving in the leadership role last season, as well, while Pickren, Salvi and Thompson are each first-time team captains. TJ is the son of the late Tony Minter and Catherine Minter. Will is the son of Wilson and Renee Pickren. James-Ryan is the son of Ryan and Denise Salvi. Tramell is the son of Chelsea Thompson.

Hampden-Sydney Football
H-SC has a 128-year history of football, amassing 576 wins since beginning in 1892. The Tigers have experienced great success over the years, including nine ODAC Championships, nine Mason-Dixon Conference Championships, seven NCAA Division III Championship appearances, 86 All-Americans, 16 Academic All-America selections and 214 First Team All-ODAC honorees. H-SC also played in the 1970 and 1971 Knute Rockne Bowls (NCAA College Division East Regional Championship).
