Soccer Battles Lynchburg to 1-1 Double Overtime Draw

Box Score

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - Hampden-Sydney Soccer battled Lynchburg College to a 1-1 double overtime draw in ODAC action from Hellmuth Pritzlaff Field on Tuesday night. With the tie, each team earns one point in the standings.

The Tigers didn't need much time to notch their goal, scoring in the seventh minute. James Lawrence (Midlothian, VA / Midlothian) crossed the ball off the right endline to Robert Kerby (Hampton, VA / Kecoughtan) and he fired of a powerful volley towards the back right of the net as the Lynchburg goalkeeper stood no chance of saving it. That would be all the scoring in the first half but the Hornets did manage to get three shots on goal.

Lynchburg controlled the ball for much of the first half, but the Tigers came out after intermission maintaining possession much more frequently. Each team had several strong scoring chances, but each defense held strong. Lynchburg was able to break through at 85:22 when Luke Moore lofted his shot over Cameron McFarlane (Norwich, CT / South Kent) into the back left of the goal and well out of the reach of McFarlane, eventually forcing overtime.

Much like the second half, scoring opportunities were there for each team in overtime. With less than a minute to go, the Tigers got a prime opportunity, but a Lynchburg defender came in at the last second to deflect the shot out of bounds.

McFarlane posted five saves while Lynchburg goalkeeper Jonathan Sheffield had three. The Hornets held a slim 18-14 edge in while the Tigers took a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The Tigers will try to get back in the win column on Friday when they host Emory & Henry College at 7 pm to kick start the Family Weekend athletic festivities.
