HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Senior
Mo Wumpini (Chattanooga, TN) assisted on two goals in the second half, helping Hampden-Sydney College secure a 3-0 non-conference win over Misericordia (PA) University on Saturday morning at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
The Tigers got on the board just over seven and a half minutes into the game, when senior
Kaden Sawyer (Virginia Beach) knocked the ball toward junior
Gavin Edgington (Clayton, NC), who stuck his foot out and put the ball over a leaping goalie to take the lead. H-SC had one other good opportunity to find the back of the net in the first half, but was unable to convert to keep it at 1-0 going into halftime.
The Tigers came close to doubling the lead just under 10 minutes into the second half when a free kick from senior
Jason Trujillo (North Lauderdale, FL) cannoned off the crossbar, but then they doubled their lead in the 64th minute when Wumpini crossed the ball and found sophomore
Ubaid Wasi (Meherrin) on the doorstep for a tap-in finish. The lead was pushed to three just 52 seconds later, when Wumpini beat a couple of the defenders and found the run of sophomore
Jackson Robbins (Glen Allen) on the left wing, who then put it into the bottom right corner. The Cougars responded with a good chance that sophomore
Stig Larson (Richmond) was a match for, but that was their final chance of the game, as H-SC secured a 3-0 shutout win.
H-SC held the edge in the game offensively, taking 13 shots to three for the Cougars and putting four of them on target compared to two.
Larson earned his third win of the season, making two saves for his third shutout.
The Tigers hit the road for the first time this season, as they travel to Buena Vista to take on Southern Virginia University on Wednesday, September 16. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Knight Stadium.
