HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Juniors
Zakky Johnston (Meherrin) and
Gavin Edgington (Clayton, NC) scored to help lift Hampden-Sydney College to a 2-0 non-conference win over William Peace (NC) University on Friday night at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
The Tigers wasted no time finding the back of the net, as in the 9th minute, junior
Colin Mason (Forest) put a cross in from the right edge of the box towards the far post, where Johnston slid into the path of the pass and put it past a diving keeper. H-SC doubled its advantage just under 30 minutes later, when freshman
Egan Tyler (Henderson, NC) won a penalty; senior
Tyler Petz (Cary, NC) stepped up to the spot and had his shot saved along with his rebound effort saved as well, before Edington flew in and tapped home the rebound for his first goal in the Garnet and Grey.
The second half saw the scoring dry up for the Tigers, but they stayed solid at the back, only allowing two shots in the half, none of which troubled sophomore
Stig Larson (Richmond) in net to secure the shutout.
The Tigers had double the shots over the course of the 90 minutes, 16-8, while putting 10 of the 16 shots on target.
Larson got his second win of the season in net, making three saves to earn the shutout.
The Tigers will be back in action on Sunday, September 6, when they play host to Sewanee (TN) in non-conference action. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
