(October 5, 2005) HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – The visiting soccer Knights of Southern Virginia were shut out 2-0 by the Tigers of Hampden-Sydney. The win gives the Tigers their sixth shout out of the year and improves their record to 7-4-1 overall, while remaining at 3-2 in the ODAC. The Knights, who currently do not have conference affiliation, fell to 5-7.
Senior Pierce Buckingham (Richmond, VA/Christchurch) replaced an injured Ben Marchetti (Richmond, VA/Benedictine) in the goal at just 2:41 into the first half. His effort along with the solid play of the Tigers' defense gave Buckingham his first shut out of the season. Hampden-Sydney dominated offensively as well by out shooting Southern Virginia by a margin of 22 – 9.
Offensively, the Tigers were led by junior captain Greg Smith (Warrenton, VA/Fauquier), who scored his and the games first goal at the 2:41 mark with a header from an indirect pass off the foot of Robert Harem (Pelham, AL/ Pelham). Adding another goal was sophomore Greg Danahy (Roanoke, VA/Hidden Valley), who scored on a second assist from senior Harem. The two assists coming from the inspired play of Harem, makes him the team leader by far with six on the year.
Hampden-Sydney will travel this Saturday, October 8, 2005 to play the ODAC's first place Virginia Wesleyan Marlins. Game time is set for 2:00pm.
