GREENSBORO, NC (October 16, 2003)—Tenth-ranked Greensboro College narrowly upended Hampden-Sydney College, 2-1, Thursday in Adidas/NSCAA South Region soccer action. With the win, the Pride improves to 10-1-2 as the Tigers fall to 5-7-1.
Richard Engle scored the first goal of the game for Greensboro in the 15th minute of action on a 25-yard blast off an assist from Charlie Rierson. Trailing 1-0 in the second half, Tiger senior Pat Whitehead (Williamsburg, VA/Walsingham Academy) knotted the score with a five-yard strike after taking a pass from freshman Ian Jeremiah (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee).
Greensboro's Galen Reid then scored the game-winner in the 60th minute, scoring on a breakaway after taking a through ball from Michael Smith.
Greensboro out-shot Hampden-Sydney, 17-4, and had a 6-0 advantage on corner kicks. Pierce Buckingham (Richmond, VA/Christchurch) and Nathaniel Dallas (Hendersonville, TN/Hendersonville) each recorded a save in the net for the Tigers.
The loss is the fourth one-goal loss for the Tigers this season as the team is playing without four starters who are out due to injury, including All-American midfielder Chad Quenneville. The Tigers will look to rebound Saturday, October 18, as the team hosts Emory and Henry at 3 pm during Homecoming Weekend festivities.
