H-SC dropped a heartbreaking
29-28 decision at home to Wabash (IN) College in The Gentlemen's Classic on Sept. 2 at Everett Stadium. The closely-played contest was tied at 14-14 at halftime, and the visiting Little Giants led 21-14 after three quarters, before the host Tigers scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to lead 28-21 with 4:23 remaining; however, Wabash scored a late touchdown, then were successful on a two-point conversion for the road win. BC dropped a 29-23 home decision in overtime to NAIA member Warner (FL) University.
Favret Coaching Final Season
H-SC head coach
Marty Favret, the all-time winningest coach in program history, announced on
August 20 that 2023 will be his final season of coaching. In 23-plus seasons at the College, he has attained 145 victories (145-87) and led the Tigers to 15 winning seasons with five ODAC Championships (2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014) and six NCAA Division III Football Championship appearances (2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014). Favret is currently the longest-tenured collegiate football head coach in Virginia.

H-SC was led offensively in last week's season-opening game vs. Wabash (IN) by sophomore quarterback
Carter Sido (Dallas, TX). Sido rushed for a game-high and career-high 184 yards on 20 attempts and a career-high three touchdowns in his first collegiate start, passing for a career-high 153 yards (15-23-0) and one touchdown with no interceptions — totaling 337 yards of total offense and four touchdowns. It's believed to be a school record for single-game rushing yards by a quarterback at H-SC, as well — he had seven runs of 10-plus yards or more, including three of 20-plus yards — a 46-yard TD run being his longest.
Senior running back
Melik Frost (Hardeeville, SC) rushed for 63 yards on 20 attempts vs. Wabash, adding 23 yards receiving on four receptions.
Junior tight end
Sutton Lasso (Raleigh, NC) led the receiving unit in week one with a career-high 58 yards receiving on a career-high three receptions and one touchdown, the first of his career. Sophomore wide receiver
Mason Cunningham (Arlington) finished with 48 yards receiving on five receptions, while junior wide receiver
Austin Fernandez (Warrenton) had 12 yards receiving on two receptions and senior wide receiver

George Langhammer (Roanoke) averaged 47.0 yards on one punt, while Sido averaged 31.5 yards on two punts, including a long of 40 yards, and one downed inside the 20.

Brice Wilson (Charlottesville) averaged 10.5 yards on two kick returns, including a long of 13 yards.
Scouting Brevard
Brevard is expected to be led offensively by sophomore quarterback Ethan Beamish, a transfer from NCAA Division II Limestone (SC), senior wide receiver Zackary Orr, sophomore wide receiver Adam Douglas and senior running back Devonte Murray. Beamish passed for 298 yards (29-44-3) and one touchdown vs. Warner. Orr had 93 yards receiving on 10 receptions, while Douglas had 65 yards receiving on four receptions and one touchdown. Murray rushed for 43 yards on 12 attempts (3.6) with one touchdown. Junior defensive back Dylan James led the Tornados on defense during week one with eight tackles, including six solo, with one blocked kick. Senior defensive lineman Trey Williams added seven tackles, including one solo, and 1.5 tackles for loss, while graduate defensive back Joc Pledger had one interception a week ago. Junior placekicker Hugo Taylor was 2-2 on PATs, and 3-3 on field goals, including a long of 40 yards made with just 10-seconds remaining to force the OT last week. Junior punter Nicholas Acus averaged 32.5 yards on four punts, including a long of 40 yards, and three downed inside the 20. Junior wide receiver Cooper Hogan had one punt return for 14 yards vs. Warner, and averaged 8.5 yards on four kick returns, including a long of 18 yards, while senior running back DJ Taylor had one kick return for 18 yards.

Carter Sido leads the ODAC in rushing yards (184) and total offense (337), is tied for first in rushing touchdowns (3) and scoring (18), second in all-purpose yards (184) and seventh in punting average (31.5).

Will Pickren is tied for first in the ODAC in interceptions (1), tied for second in passes defended (2) and tied for eighth in total tackles (9).

Sido accounted for 337 yards of total offense and four touchdowns ... rushing for a game-high and career-high 184 yards and three touchdowns ... and passing for 153 yards and one touchdown. It's believed to be a school record for single-game rushing yards by a quarterback, as well — he had seven runs of 10-plus yards or more, including three of 20-plus yards — the 46-yard touchdown run being his longest. The second-year standout from Dallas, Texas was playing in only his seventh college game overall, and just his fourth college game at QB.

Sido rushed for a game-high and career-high 184 yards and three touchdowns in his first collegiate start, adding a career-high 153 yards passing and one touchdown, totaling 337 yards of total offense and four touchdowns during a heartbreaking 29-28 non-conference setback to visiting Wabash (IN) in "The Gentlemen's Classic" on September 2. It's believed to be a school record for single-game rushing yards by a quarterback, as well — he had seven runs of 10-plus yards or more, including three of 20-plus yards — the 46-yard TD run being his longest. He got started early at Everett Stadium when he broke loose on a third-and-one, running 46 yards down the middle of the field to the end zone at 13:03 of the first quarter for his first rushing touchdown, before completing a 16-yard touchdown pass to junior tight end
Sutton Lasso at 5:11 of the second quarter. Sido added two fourth-quarter rushing touchdowns, including an 11-yard touchdown run with 10:17 remaining, and a one-yard touchdown run at 4:23 of the final stanza—his third rushing touchdown of the game.
Lasso Catches First Receiving Touchdown

The 2022 First Team AP Division III All-American and three-time First Team All-ODAC safety currently totals 276 career tackles, and now needs just 69 to equal and 70 to surpass and become the school's all-time leader in tackles. Brendan Weinberg '22 is the current career leader in tackles with 345.
Career Watch: Melik Frost
The 2022 Third Team D3football.com All-Region 3 and First Team All-ODAC running back currently totals 1,322 career rushing yards and 17 career rushing touchdowns, adding 291 career receiving yards and one career receiving touchdown — totaling 1,613 career all-purpose yards and 18 career touchdowns.

H-SC has a 128-year history of football, amassing 572 wins since beginning in 1892. The Tigers have experienced great success over the years, including nine ODAC Championships, nine Mason-Dixon Conference Championships, seven NCAA Division III Championship appearances, 86 All-Americans, 16 Academic All-America selections and 214 First Team All-ODAC honorees. H-SC also played in the 1970 and 1971 Knute Rockne Bowls (NCAA College Division East Regional Championship).
