Hampden-Sydney Plays On The Road At Greensboro (NC) Saturday At Noon

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College will play on the road for the first time this season at Greensboro (NC) College in non-conference football action on Saturday afternoon, September 16, at 12 p.m. on Pride Field in Greensboro, North Carolina. The visiting Tigers are 1-1 overall, while the host Pride are 0-2 overall. The game can be heard locally on WVHL Radio, Kickin' Country 92.9 FM, and will also be available worldwide on the Internet at wvhl.net or via the TuneIn Radio App, with pregame airing at 11:30 a.m. It will be available to watch, as well, per Greensboro College Athletics.

H-SC took a weather-delayed 31-17 non-conference victory past Brevard (NC) College last Saturday afternoon on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. The contest was delayed for one-hour and 46-minutes at 13:37 of the first quarter due to lightning in the area, before resuming uninterrupted thereafter with only a five-minute break taken at halftime. The host Tigers led 10-0 after one quarter, 17-10 at the half, and 24-17 after three quarters en route to their hard-fought home win against the visiting Tornados in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. GC dropped a 34-7 non-conference road decision at Averett University.

Favret Coaching Final Season
H-SC head coach Marty Favret, the all-time winningest coach in program history, announced on August 20 that 2023 will be his final season of coaching. In 23-plus seasons at the College, he has attained 146 victories (146-87) and led the Tigers to 15 winning seasons with five ODAC Championships (2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014) and six NCAA Division III Football Championship appearances (2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014). Favret is currently the longest-tenured collegiate football head coach in Virginia.

The Series
H-SC and GC have met just one time previously with the Tigers taking a 70-28 home win past the Pride last season on Sept. 17, 2022 at Hampden-Sydney. The 70 points are the second-highest scored by H-SC during the tenure of Coach Favret.

Scouting The Tigers
H-SC has been led offensively through two games by sophomore quarterback Carter Sido (Dallas, TX). Sido has passed for 304 yards (30-48-0) and three touchdowns with no interceptions, while rushing for 210 yards on 26 attempts and three touchdowns — totaling 514 yards of total offense. Unfortunately, he suffered an injury late in the third quarter vs. Brevard, and will not play this week at Greensboro.

Senior quarterback Andrew Puccinelli (Glen Allen) will get the start this week, and has passed for 70 yards (5-6-0) and one touchdown with no interceptions this season, while rushing for six yards on one attempt. Puccinelli made his first collegiate start vs. GC last season and passed for a game-high and career-high 305 yards (28-33) and a career-high four touchdowns with two interceptions, adding a rushing touchdown. He has passed for 791 yards (82-121-2) and eight touchdowns in nine career games.

Senior running back Melik Frost (Hardeeville, SC) has rushed for 166 yards on 43 attempts and one touchdown, adding four receptions for 23 yards.

Sophomore wide receiver Mason Cunningham (Arlington) leads the receiving unit with 10 receptions for 151 yards and one touchdown. Junior wide receiver Austin Fernandez (Warrenton) has eight receptions for 87 yards. Senior wide receiver Jamahdia Whitby (Williamsburg) has six receptions for 43 yards and one touchdown, adding 46 yards rushing on two attempts. Junior tight end Sutton Lasso (Raleigh, NC) has three receptions for 58 yards and one touchdown. Sophomore running back Markevus Graves-Franklin (Lynchburg) has one reception for two yards and one touchdown.

H-SC has been led defensively through two games by senior safety James-Ryan Salvi (Troutville) with 20 total tackles, including six solo, and 0.5 tackles for loss. Senior All-American safety and team captain Will Pickren (Mount Pleasant, SC) has 19 total tackles, including eight solo, one tackle for loss, two interceptions and one pass breakup. Senior linebacker Dorian Green (Martinsville) has 15 total tackles, including six solo. Senior cornerback Tobias Lafayette (Charleston, SC) has 13 total tackles, including nine solo, one tackle for loss and four pass breakups. Junior linebacker Jackson Lott (Norfolk) also has 13 total tackles, including three solo. Sophomore cornerback James Townsend (Hardeeville, SC) has 10 total tackles, including six solo, two pass breakups, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Sophomore placekicker Elijah Swett (Matthews, NC) is a perfect 8-8 on PAT kicks and is 1-2 on field goals, successful on a 41-yard attempt with one attempt blocked. Carter Sido has averaged 35.3 yards on three punts, including a long of 43 yards, and one downed inside the 20. Senior left-footed punter George Langhammer (Roanoke) has averaged 35.0 yards on three punts, including a long of 47 yards.

Sophomore wide receiver Joseph Gonzalez (Spotsylvania) has averaged 28.0 yards on one kick return. Senior cornerback Brice Wilson (Charlottesville) has averaged 10.5 yards on two kick returns, including a long of 13 yards. Mason Cunningham has averaged 6.0 yards on one punt return.

Scouting Greensboro
GC has been led offensively through two games by junior quarterback Alex Williams-Carr, senior running back Rodney Scott Jr., along with redshirt-senior tight end Anthony Hreiz and senior wide receiver KJ Greer. Williams-Carr has passed for 404 yards (39-75-1) and two touchdowns with one interception, while rushing for 116 yards on 32 attempts and one touchdown — totaling 520 yards of total offense. Scott has rushed for 77 yards on 20 attempts, adding five receptions for 40 yards. Hreiz has six receptions for 85 yards and one touchdown. Greer has six receptions for 97 yards. GC as been led defensively through two games by junior linebacker Tyler Austin with 17 total tackles, including 10 solo, one tackle for loss and one interception. Junior linebacker Max Steele has 15 total tackles, including 10 solo, two tackles for loss and one sack. Junior defensive back JaJaun Givens has 11 total tackles, including seven solo. Junior linebacker Dejuan Robinson has 10 total tackles, including four solo, two tackles for loss and one sack. Freshman placekicker/punter Alex Mora is 2-3 on PAT kicks, with no field goal attempts, and has averaged 30.1 yards on seven punts, including a long of 51 yards, two downed inside the 20 and one fair caught. Freshman wide receiver Ja'Shawn Harris has averaged 23.1 yards on seven kick returns, including a long of 30 yards. Junior Coy Davis has averaged 26.0 yards on one kick returns. KJ Greer has averaged 2.0 yards on one punt return.

Among the ODAC Leaders
Carter Sido leads the ODAC in total offense (514), is third in passing yards (304) and rushing yards (210), tied for third in rushing touchdowns (3) and overall scoring 18), while fourth in passing touchdowns (3) and all-purpose yards (210).

Mason Cunningham leads the ODAC in receiving yards (151), is tied for first in receptions (10) and tied for fourth in receiving touchdowns (1).

Tobias Lafayette leads the ODAC in passes defended (4) and pass breakups (4).

Will Pickren is tied for first in the ODAC in interceptions (2), tied for second in passes defended (3) and fifth in total tackles (19).

James Townsend is tied for first in the ODAC in fumbles forced (1) and fumbles recovered (1), while tied for second in passes defended (3).

James-Ryan Salvi is fourth in the ODAC in total tackles (20).

Austin Fernandez is tied for fourth in the ODAC in receptions (8) and is eighth in receiving yards (87).

Jamahdia Whitby is tied for fourth in the ODAC in receiving touchdowns (1), and is tied for ninth in receptions (6).

Sutton Lasso is tied for fourth in the ODAC in receiving touchdowns (1).

Elijah Swett is fifth in the ODAC in kick scoring (11.0).

Melik Frost is tied for seventh in the ODAC in rushing touchdowns (1), while eighth in rushing yards (166) and all-purpose yards (189).

Sophomore defensive end Jacob McKinney (Springfield) is tied for seventh in the ODAC in sacks (1).

Dorian Green is tied for ninth in the ODAC in total tackles (15).

Career Watch: Will Pickren
The 2022 First Team AP Division III All-American and three-time First Team All-ODAC safety currently totals 286 career tackles, and now needs just 59 to equal and 60 to surpass and become the school's all-time leader in tackles. Brendan Weinberg '22 is the current career leader in tackles with 345.

Career Watch: Melik Frost
The 2022 Third Team D3football.com All-Region 3 and First Team All-ODAC running back currently totals 1,425 career rushing yards and 18 career rushing touchdowns, adding 291 career receiving yards and one career receiving touchdown — totaling 1,716 career all-purpose yards and 19 career touchdowns.

100/200-Yard Rushing Games
Melik Frost has five career games with 100-plus yards rushing, including a career-high 211 yards on 21 attempts (10.0) and four touchdowns last season vs. Greensboro (9/17/22). It was the sixth-best single-game rushing effort in program history. He had his first 100-yard rushing game this season with 103 yards on 23 attempts and one touchdown last week vs. Brevard (9/9) ... and had three other 100-yard rushing games in 2022, including 101 yards on 17 attempts and two touchdowns at Wabash (9/3), 105 yards on 18 attempts and one touchdown at Ferrum (10/8) and 125 yards on 30 attempts and three touchdowns vs. Guilford (10/29).

300-Yard Passing Game
Andrew Puccinelli, making his first collegiate start, passed for a career-high 305 yards (28-33-2) and a career-high four touchdowns last season vs. Greensboro (9/17).

100-Yard Receiving Games
Mason Cunningham has four career games with 100-plus yards receiving, including one this season — 103 yards on five receptions and one touchdown last week vs. Brevard (9/9). He had three 100-yard receiving games in 2022, including 116 yards on nine receptions and one touchdown vs. Greensboro (9/17), a career-high 163 yards on a career-high 13 receptions and a career-high three touchdowns at Ferrum (10/8) and 130 yards on nine receptions and two touchdowns vs. Averett (10/15).

100-Yard Receiving Games
Austin Fernandez had three 100-yard receiving games in 2022, including 134 yards on five receptions (26.8) and one touchdown vs. Widener (9/10), 124 yards on seven receptions (19.1) and one touchdown at Bridgewater (10/1) and a career-high 165 yards on eight receptions (20.6) and one touchdown vs. Averett (10/15).

Team Captains
Leading the Tigers are senior offensive tackle TJ Minter (Chester), Will Pickren, James-Ryan Salvi and senior defensive end Tramell Thompson (Queens, NY). Minter becomes a two-time team captain after serving in the leadership role last season, as well, while Pickren, Salvi and Thompson are each first-time team captains. TJ is the son of the late Tony Minter and Catherine Minter. Will is the son of Wilson and Renee Pickren. James-Ryan is the son of Ryan and Denise Salvi. Tramell is the son of Chelsea Thompson.

Hampden-Sydney Football
H-SC has a 128-plus year history of football, amassing 573 wins since beginning in 1892. The Tigers have experienced great success over the years, including nine ODAC Championships, nine Mason-Dixon Conference Championships, seven NCAA Division III Championship appearances, 86 All-Americans, 16 Academic All-America selections and 214 First Team All-ODAC honorees. H-SC also played in the 1970 and 1971 Knute Rockne Bowls (NCAA College Division East Regional Championship).
