HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College welcomes archrival and nationally-ranked No. 16 Randolph-Macon College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football action on Saturday afternoon, November 12, at 1 p.m. on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. The host Tigers are 5-4 overall, 4-2 (T-3rd) in the ODAC, while the visiting Yellow Jackets are unbeaten at 9-0 overall, 6-0 (1st) in the ODAC. It's the 127th edition of "The Game" as well as Senior Day for 14 Tigers in a contest that is considered the Oldest Small School Rivalry in the South. H-SC dropped a 23-7 ODAC decision on the road at Shenandoah on Nov. 5 in Winchester, that stopped a recent four-game winning streak. R-MC enjoyed a 52-10 home win past Ferrum on Nov. 5 in Ashland, it's ninth consecutive win this season.
The Series
H-SC leads the all-time series against R-MC,
60-55-11. The Yellow Jackets, however, have won eight-straight and 10 of the last 11 games played between the two storied programs, including a 37-14 home win past the Tigers last Nov. 13, 2021 in Ashland. H-SC is 10-12 against R-MC under Coach Favret, who won nine of the first 11 games he coached in the rivalry—including seven-straight wins from 2001-07. The Tigers' last win in the series was in 2013, a 28-26 road win in Ashland, while H-SC's last home win in the series was in 2010, a 31-28 victory at Everett Stadium. The archrivals first met on the gridiron in 1893, as R-MC won that first meeting, 12-6, in the Tigers' second year as a program. H-SC, however, returned the favor in 1896 with a 24-0 shutout victory. The longest win-streak in the series is eight, accomplished by each team once: first by H-SC from 1917-23, while playing twice during both 1917 and 1919, and currently by R-MC since 2014.
Scouting The Tigers
H-SC has the fifth-ranked passing offense in NCAA Division III (325.9), and is led offensively by fifth-year quarterback and second-year team captain
Tanner Bernard (Lynchburg). Bernard has passed for 2,283 yards (184-279-3) and 20 touchdowns in seven games, adding three touchdowns on the ground, as well. Bernard did not play vs. Greensboro (9/17) or Shenandoah (11/5), and was out for the second half vs. Guilford (10/29), all due to injury. Junior quarterback
Andrew Puccinelli (Glen Allen) has passed for 646 yards (66-94-2) and six touchdowns in three games, adding one touchdown on the ground.
The running game features junior running back
Melik Frost (Hardeeville, SC), who has rushed for 852 yards on 188 attempts (4.5) and 11 touchdowns, adding 236 yards receiving on 25 catches and one touchdown.

Austin Fernandez (Warrenton) has led the receiving unit with 769 yards receiving on 59 receptions and six touchdowns. Freshman wide receiver

David Byler (Virginia Beach) has 525 yards receiving on 47 catches and six touchdowns, and junior wide receiver

Will Pickren (Mount Pleasant, SC) leads the Tigers on defense with 108 total tackles, including five tackles for loss, two interceptions, one forced fumble, three pass breakups, one quarterback hurry and one blocked PAT kick. Junior safety

Scouting The Yellow Jackets
R-MC has the eighth-ranked rushing defense in Division III (58.1), and the 10th-ranked rushing offense (262.9), and is expected to be led offensively by junior quarterback Drew Campanale, senior quarterback Andrew Ihle, senior running back Nick Hale, junior running back Kwesi Clarke, along with senior wide receiver David Wallis. Campanale has passed for 1,812 yards (122-152-2) and 19 touchdowns, adding four touchdowns on the ground, as well, while Ihle has passed for 145 yards (10-15-0) and one touchdown, adding 358 yards rushing on 63 attempts (5.7) and 12 touchdowns on the ground. Hale has rushed for 572 yards on 98 attempts (5.8) and eight touchdowns, while Clarke has rushed for 736 yards on 108 attempts (6.8) and six touchdowns. Wallis has 880 yards receiving on 34 receptions and 10 touchdowns. Senior safety Cade Jones has led the Yellow Jackets on defense with 42 total tackles, including one tackle for loss, two interceptions and five pass breakups. Junior linebacker Jackson Deaver has 35 total tackles, including six tackles for loss, three sacks and one pass breakup. Sophomore placekicker/punter Kyle Ihle is 40-45 on PATs, and 1-1 on field goals (33), and has averaged 30.9 yards on 10 punts, including a long of 61 yards, with three inside the 20. David Wallis has averaged 17.9 yards on nine kick returns, including a long of 33 yards.

H-SC dropped a 37-14 ODAC decision on the road at nationally-ranked No. 19 R-MC at Day Field in Ashland. The visiting Tigers led 7-3 after one quarter, before the host Yellow Jackets took a 27-7 lead at halftime en route to their home win.
Tanner Bernard passed for 214 yards (17-41) and one touchdown with one interception for H-SC. Kaleb Smith rushed for 61 yards on 17 attempts and one touchdown.
Braeden Bowling had 78 yards receiving on two receptions and one touchdown, while Nick Kallivokas finished with 40 yards receiving on four catches. Brendan Weinberg had with a game-high 13 tackles, including 1.5 for loss, to lead the Tigers on defense. Garrett Robinson and
Will Pickren each added seven tackles, including half a tackle for loss by Pickren and a fumble recovery by Robinson. Brecht Heuchan passed for a game-high 265 yards (15-21) and three touchdowns with no interceptions for R-MC. Nick Hale had 72 yards rushing on 11 attempts and one touchdown. David Wallis had a game-high 99 yards receiving on three receptions and two touchdowns, while Joey Hunt added 72 yards receiving on five catches and one touchdown. Tyler DeBerry finished with 11 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss (sack) and a forced fumble for the Yellow Jackets.

Tanner Bernard leads the ODAC in passing yards per game (326.1), passing touchdowns (20), completions per game (26.3) and total offense (329.7), is second in passing yards (2,283), completion percentage (65.9), passing efficiency (156.2) and passing yards per attempt (8.2), and fourth in passing yards per completion (12.4). He ranks second in Division III in passing yards per game, third in completions per game and fourth in total offense.
Will Pickren leads the ODAC in total tackles (108) and tackles per game (12.0), and is tied for fifth in interceptions (2). He ranks sixth in Division III in total tackles and tackles per game.
Melik Frost leads the ODAC in rushing yards (852), rushing yards per game (94.7), all-purpose yards (1,088) and total touchdowns (12), and is second in all-purpose yards per game (120.9) and rushing touchdowns (11).

Tanner Bernard has passed for 400-plus yards in two games this season ... and has passed for over 300 yards 10 times in his H-SC career, including six of seven games played this season. He passed for a career-high 452 yards (33-49-0) and five touchdowns vs. Averett (10/15), after passing for 440 yards (33-44-2) and four touchdowns at Ferrum (10/8). Bernard has games of 346 yards and four-touchdowns at Wabash (9/3), 328 yards and three touchdowns vs. Widener (9/10), 321 yards and one touchdown at Bridgewater (10/1) and 313 yards and three touchdowns at Washington and Lee (10/22).
300-Yard Passing Game
Andrew Puccinelli, making his first collegiate start, passed for a career-high 305 yards (28-33-2) and four touchdowns vs. Greensboro (9/17).
200-Yard Rushing Game
Melik Frost rushed for a career-high 211 yards on 21 carries (10.0) and four touchdowns vs. Greensboro (9/17). It's the sixth-best single-game rushing effort in program history. He has four 100-yard rushing games this season and during his H-SC career, including 101 yards on 17 carries (5.9) and two touchdowns at Wabash (9/3), 105 yards on 18 carries (5.8) and one touchdown at Ferrum (10/8) and 125 yards on 30 carries (4.2) and three touchdowns vs. Guilford (10/29).
Making A Run At 1,000 Yards
Melik Frost is looking to become the first 1,000-yard rusher at H-SC since 2015, and only the 11th all-time. He currently has 852 yards rushing, the most in a season since 2017 (Mike Demasi, 715), and needs 148 yards to reach the magical plateau. Kyree Koonce rushed for 1,313 yards on 227 attempts (5.8) with 12 touchdowns in 2015.
A Record for Tight Ends
David Byler has established a new season record for receptions by a tight end at H-SC, currently with 47 receptions for 525 yards and six touchdowns. Ben Dull '06 had made 36 receptions for 447 yards and seven touchdowns in 2005.
All-Time Wins Leader
Twenty-third year head coach
Marty Favret now totals 145 football coaching wins with the Tigers, recently surpassing legendary H-SC Hall of Fame head coach
J. Stokeley Fulton as the all-time winningest football coach at the College. Coach Favret earned his record-breaking win with the dramatic 44-43 overtime road victory at Washington and Lee (10/22). Marty currently has an overall record of 145-85, while Coach Fulton compiled a record of 143-99-5 over 25 seasons from 1960-84.
Oh So Close ...
H-SC has yielded game-winning touchdowns with less than one minute to play in two of its four losses this season, and the game-winning score came with just 3:43 remaining in another setback. Wabash scored with 46-seconds on the clock for its 52-48 home win, and Widener scored with 37-seconds on the clock for its 31-27 road win, while Bridgewater scored late (3:43) during its 27-17 home win (also adding a field goal with 20-seconds on the clock).
William V. Campbell Trophy®
Fifth-year defensive tackle
Michael Harris (Ashland) was named a semifinalist for the
2022 William V. Campbell Trophy®, college football's premier scholar-athlete award, as announced on September 28 by the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF). He was among 156 semifinalists from all divisions, while one of only two from the ODAC and 29 selected from Division III. Michael is a Dean's List student majoring in theatre with a minor in music and has attained a 3.29 GPA.

Hampden-Sydney Football
H-SC has a 128-year history of football, amassing 572 wins since beginning in 1892. The Tigers have experienced great success over the years, including nine ODAC Championships, nine Mason-Dixon Conference Championships, seven NCAA Division III Championship appearances, 85 All-Americans, 13 Academic All-America selections and 210 First Team All-ODAC honorees. H-SC also played in the 1970 and 1971 Knute Rockne Bowls (NCAA College Division East Regional Championship).
