HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College plays its first road game of the 2021 fall football campaign at non-conference opponent Widener University on Saturday afternoon, September 11, at 1 p.m. on Elizabeth J. Hirschmann Field at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium in Chester, Pennsylvania. The visiting Tigers are 0-1 this season, while the host Pride are 1-0. H-SC opened at home
last weekend, dropping a 45-24 non-conference decision to visiting Baldwin Wallace (OH) on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. The Tigers trailed just 10-7 after one quarter, but fell behind 24-10 at halftime and never recovered against the Yellow Jackets. WU opened on the road last weekend, taking a 27-22 come-from-behind victory at Rowan (NJ). The Pride trailed 22-17 at halftime before outscoring RU 10-0 in the second half for the win. The two schools have met one time previously, back in 1958 when H-SC won at Widener 24-18, though the Pride were known as the Pennsylvania Military College at the time.

H-SC is led by the veteran head coach who is the second-winningest coach in school history with 135 victories (135-77), including 15 winning campaigns, while a five-time ODAC Coach of the Year. His program is 86-46 in ODAC games, while earning five ODAC Championships and making six NCAA Division III Football Championship playoff appearances.
Scouting The Tigers
H-SC is expected to be led offensively by senior quarterback and team captain
Tanner Bernard (Lynchburg), sophomore running back
Josh Jones (South Hill) and fifth-year wide receiver and second-year team captain
Dillon Costello (Haymarker). Bernard passed for 127 yards (12-18) and one touchdown last week ... the TD coming on a 68-yard completion to Costello, who had two receptions for 76 yards receiving. Jones, making his first collegiate start, rushed for 78 yards on 15 attempts with one touchdown ... scoring on a 26-yard run.
Sophomore safety
Will Pickren (Mt Pleasant, SC) and fifth-year linebacker and team captain
Brendan Weinberg (Apex, NC) led the Tigers defense in week one with 12 and 11 tackles, respectively. Weinberg had two tackles for loss, while Pickren was credited with half a tackle for loss. Junior safety
Hunter Spence (Colonial Heights) added a collegiate-best eight tackles with half a tackle for loss, as well, while sophomore safety
James-Ryan Salvi (Troutville) matched his collegiate-best with six tackles.
Junior placekicker
Jack Breedlove (Atlanta, GA) was a perfect 3-3 on PATs, and also added his first collegiate field goal from 31 yards. He averaged 52.0 yards on four kickoffs, as well, with one touchback. Sophomore left-footed punter
George Langhammer (Roanoke) averaged 44.4 yards on five punts, including a collegiate-best of 67 yards.
Scouting The Pride
WU is expected to be led offensively by graduate quarterback Triston Harris, senior running back Tahir Cruse and senior wide receiver James Gillespie. Harris passed for 243 yards (17-29) and one touchdown a week ago ... the TD coming on a 52-yard completion to Gillespie, who had two receptions for 75 yards receiving. Cruse rushed for 76 yards on 11 attempts with one touchdown ... scoring on a 25-yard run.
Graduate defensive tackle Brendan Kearns and sophomore defensive end Owen Kramer led the Pride defense in week one with nine tackles each. Kearns had one tackle for loss. Junior linebacker Colin Murt added eight tackles with one tackle for loss, as well, while classmate and linebacker Terrence Thompson had six tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss and half a sack.
Senior placekicker Larry Elmer was a perfect 3-3 on PATs, and also added two field goals from 25 yards and 32 yards. He averaged 48.0 yards on six kickoffs, as well. First-year punter AJ Celona averaged 35.0 yards on four punts, including a long of 46 yards.

Hall of Fame Weekend that will induct two classes this year due to last year's ceremony being postponed (COVID-19).
