Hampden-Sydney Hosts Ferrum On Saturday At 1 p.m.

Tigers & Panthers play in 3rd-place game of ODAC's first-ever Football Championship Week

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College plays at home against Ferrum College in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's first-ever Football Championship Week on Saturday afternoon, April 3, at 1 p.m. on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. It's the ODAC's third-place game as the Tigers have a record of 3-1 overall, 3-1 in the ODAC, while the Panthers are 2-2 overall, 2-2 in the ODAC. The game can be heard locally on WFLO Radio, 95.7 FM, and live video will be streamed online at hscathletics.com.

Head Coach Marty Favret
H-SC is led by the veteran head coach who is the second-winningest coach in school history with 134 victories (134-76), including 14 winning campaigns, while a five-time ODAC Coach of the Year. His program is 86-46 in ODAC games, while earning five ODAC Championships and making six NCAA Division III Football Championship playoff appearances.

The Series
Ferrum leads the young series at 3-2, including three-straight wins. The Tigers won the first two games played between the two schools in 2011 (H, 38-14) and 2015 (A, 55-24), while the Panthers have won the last three games played in 2016 (N, 42-20), 2018 (A, 32-19) and 2019 (H, 31-14). The last two games between the two schools, have counted as conference games after Ferrum became a full-member of the ODAC prior to the 2018-19 academic year.

Presley Egbers passed for two touchdowns and ran for two touchdowns to lead Randolph-Macon to 28-0 ODAC road win at Hampden-Sydney in the 125th edition of "The Game." The visiting Yellow Jackets led 21-0 at halftime before adding a late touchdown in the fourth quarter against the host Tigers. Junior quarterback Tanner Bernard/Lynchburg passed for 62 yards (7-18) with two interceptions. Junior running back Kaleb Smith/Rocky Mount rushed for 31 yards on seven carries. Senior captain/wide receiver Dillon Costello/South Riding had two catches for 20 yards, while freshman wide receiver Braeden Bowling/Cary, NC added one reception for 30 yards. Freshman punter George Langhammer/Roanoke punted seven times for an average of 39.9 yards, including the 63-yarder that was downed inside the 20 at the two-yard line. Freshman defensive back Will Pickren/Mt Pleasant, SC finished with a game-high and career-high 14 tackles, including one for loss. Senior defensive end Tyler Lohman/Centreville had nine tackles, including one sack, while senior linebacker Brendan Weinberg/Apex, NC and junior linebacker Peyton Carneal/Hayes each added eight tackles—Weinberg with 0.5 tackles for loss and Carneal with one tackle for loss. Junior cornerback Jordan Fields/Chapel Hill, NC had seven tackles, while freshman cornerback Tobias Lafayette/Charleston, SC and junior defensive tackle Michael Harris/St. Stephens Church each contributed six tackles—Lafayette getting a pass breakup and Harris with one tackle for loss.

The Tigers - Offensively
H-SC is averaging 333.5 yards of total offense through four games, including 148.0 yards rushing and 185.5 yards passing. Tanner Bernard, a transfer from Division II UVA Wise, has passed for 722 yards (58-97) with six touchdowns and three interceptions. Freshman running back Melik Frost/Bluffton, SC has 212 yards rushing on 57 carries and five touchdowns, adding one reception for six yards, along with a two-point conversion. Senior running back Cole Becker/Spring Lake, NC adds 182 yards rushing on 44 attempts and one touchdown, while Kaleb Smith has gained 208 yards from scrimmage in three games, including 109 yards rushing on 22 carries and 99 yards receiving on 13 catches. Senior tight end Ed Newman/Farmville has 267 yards receiving on 17 catches and two touchdowns, Dillon Costello has 12 receptions for 125 yards and three touchdowns, senior wide receiver Blake Page/Richmond has seven receptions for 111 yards and one touchdown, and Braeden Bowling adds five catches for 106 yards. Sophomore placekicker Jack Breedlove/Atlanta, GA is 6-8 on PATs, while 0-1 on field goal attempts (30 yards), while George Langhammer has averaged 38.9 yards on 12 punts, including six fair catches and three downed inside the 20.

The Tigers - Defensively
H-SC has yielded 839 yards of total offense in four games, including just 243 yards rushing and 596 yards passing, while making five interceptions. Will Pickren leads the Tigers with 32 tackles, including one for loss, one interception and two pass breakups. Brendan Weinberg has 25 tackles, including 3.5 for loss and 1.5 sacks. Peyton Carneal has 21 tackles, including two for loss, one sack, one interception, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and a quarterback hurry. Tyler Lohman has 19 tackles, including four for loss, three sacks, one pass breakup, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and a quarterback hurry. Sophomore linebacker Will Shulleeta/Henrico has 18 tackles, including 0.5 for loss and one interception. Senior captain/defensive lineman Phil Pullen/Manassas and junior linebacker Stephen Cash/Kill Devil Hills, NC have each made 16 tackles, including 3.5 for loss, one pass breakup and two quarterback hurries by Pullen and 1.5 for loss and a half-sack by Cash. Jordan Fields has 12 tackles, Michael Harris has 11 tackles, including 2.5 for loss, and freshman defensive lineman Kevin Gholson/Montpelier has 10 tackles, including 1.5 for loss and one interception.

Among the National Leaders
H-SC ranks fifth in Division III total defense (209.8), while seventh in scoring defense (10.0), 12th in rushing defense (60.8), 13th in passing yards allowed (149.0) and passes intercepted (5), and 17th in turnovers gained (7). The Tigers are 15th in DIII first downs offense (77). H-SC is sixth in DIII fewest penalty yards per game (24.25), seventh in fewest penalties per game (3.50), and 21st in net punting (35.77).

Among the ODAC & National Leaders
Tanner Bernard is second in the ODAC and 16th in Division III passing yards (722), second in the ODAC and 18th in DIII passing touchdowns (6), second in the ODAC and 32nd in DIII passing efficiency (136.5), third in the ODAC and 35th in DIII yards per pass attempt (7.44), third in the ODAC and 36th in DIII points responsible for (36), third in the ODAC and 45th in DIII passing yards per game (180.5), fourth in the ODAC and 28th in DIII completion percentage (59.8), fourth in the ODAC and 46th in DIII passing yards per completion (12.45), and fifth in the ODAC and 43rd in DIII completions per game (14.50).

Melik Frost is fourth in the ODAC and seventh in DIII rushing touchdowns (5), fourth in the ODAC and 13th in DIII total touchdowns (5), fourth in the ODAC and 15th in DIII total points (30), fourth in the ODAC and 44th in DIII scoring (8.5), seventh in the ODAC and 35th in DIII rushing yards (212), and seventh in the ODAC and 50th in DIII points responsible for (34).

Dillon Costello is tied for first in the ODAC and tied for 17th in DIII receiving touchdowns (3), and tied for fifth in the ODAC and tied for 46th in DIII total touchdowns (3).

Ed Newman is fourth in the ODAC and 28th in DIII receiving yards (267), and is tied for fifth in the ODAC in receiving touchdowns (2).

Tyler Lohman and Peyton Carneal are each tied for first in the ODAC and tied for 11th in DIII fumbles recovered (1).

Last Game vs. Ferrum (11/09/19, home)
Clay Vick passed for one touchdown and rushed for another, but visiting Ferrum scored the final 17 points of the game for a 31-14 ODAC road win at Everett Stadium. Vick tossed a 34-yard touchdown pass to Dillon Costello, before later scoring on a three-yard run for the Tigers. The Panthers got 169 yards passing and two touchdowns from Zack Clifford, and broke the game open with a 65-yard touchdown run from Taylor Brown on fourth down via a fake-punt play in the fourth quarter.

Vick finished with 193 yards passing (21-40) and one touchdown with three interceptions, adding the touchdown run, as well. Cole Becker had 31 yards rushing on seven carries before exiting in the first half with an injury, while Justin Primm added 17 yards on two carries late in the contest. Costello finished with 57 yards receiving on five receptions and the touchdown catch, Major Morgan had seven catches for 51 yards, and Blake Page finished with 44 yards on three receptions.

Griffin Davis had a game-high 12 tackles, while Brendan Weinberg added 11 tackles, including one for loss, and Jacob Bayer had 10 tackles.

Clifford finished with 169 yards passing (16-24) and two touchdowns with no interceptions, adding 59 yards rushing on seven carries. Brown had the 65 yards for the touchdown, and Brian Mann finished with 47 yards on 15 carries and one touchdown. Ryan Beidleman had 74 yards receiving on five receptions and one touchdown, while Quentin Wallace added 43 yards on five catches and one touchdown. Brown, a starting linebacker, also had a team-high nine tackles.

Up Next
H-SC has completed the abbreviated spring season with this game. The Tigers are scheduled to open the 2021 fall campaign on Saturday, September 4, at 1 p.m. hosting Baldwin Wallace University, located in Berea, Ohio (a western suburb of Cleveland), for a non-conference contest here at Everett Stadium.
