Hampden-Sydney Plays At Guilford (NC) On Friday Evening At 5 p.m.

Tigers look to improve to 3-0 on the spring season behind Division III's top-ranked defense.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College plays on the road for the second consecutive game this spring at Guilford (NC) College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action on Friday evening, March 19, at 5 p.m. in Greensboro, North Carolina. The Tigers have a record of 2-0 overall, 2-0 in the ODAC, while the Quakers are 0-2 overall, 0-2 in the ODAC. H-SC is led by the veteran head coach who is the second-winningest coach in school history with 133 victories (133-75), including 14 winning campaigns, while a five-time ODAC Coach of the Year. His program is 85-45 in ODAC games, while earning five ODAC Championships and making six NCAA Division III Football Championship playoff appearances. The Tigers return 44 lettermen among the 103-man roster, including 18 starters with significant career playing time, while the roster includes 47 newcomers to the program, as well.

Week 2 | H-SC 26 – SU 0 (03/05/21, at SU)
Junior quarterback Tanner Bernard/Lynchburg and senior captain/wide receiver Dillon Costello/South Riding connected on two touchdown pass plays to lead H-SC to 26-0 ODAC road win at Shenandoah in Winchester. Senior tight end Ed Newman/Farmville added a 65-yard scoring reception from Bernard and freshman running back Melik Frost/Bluffton, SC added a touchdown on the ground, along with a two-point conversion, as well, while senior captain/defensive lineman Phil Pullen/Manassas led an impressive defensive effort for the second-straight week toward the shutout. The Tigers led 6-0 at halftime against the Hornets, adding two quick scores in the third quarter, before a final touchdown early in the fourth. It's the first time H-SC has posted back-to-back shutouts since 1989, including the 21-0 home win against Southern Virginia on February 27.

The Tigers - Offensively
H-SC is averaging 365.0 yards of total offense through two games, including 189.5 yards rushing and 175.5 yards passing. Tanner Bernard, a transfer from Division II UVA Wise, has passed for 351 yards (35-53) with three touchdowns and one interception, adding 15 yards on the ground. Melik Frost has 127 yards rushing on 35 carries and three touchdowns, adding one reception for six yards, along with the two-point conversion. Senior running back Cole Becker/Spring Lake, NC adds 104 yards rushing on 23 attempts and one touchdown, while junior all-purpose back Kaleb Smith/Rocky Mount has gained 176 yards from scrimmage, including 98 yards receiving on 12 catches, and 78 yards rushing on 15 carries. Ed Newman has 109 yards receiving on 10 catches and one touchdown, Dillon Costello has six receptions for 62 yards and two touchdowns, freshman wide receiver Braeden Bowling/Cary, NC has three catches for 51 yards and senior wide receiver Blake Page/Richmond adds two receptions for 20 yards. Sophomore placekicker Jack Breedlove/Atlanta, GA, a transfer from Rhodes (TN) College, is 3-4 on PATs, while 0-1 on field goal attempts (30 yards), while freshman punter George Langhammer/Roanoke has averaged 37.0 yards on four punts, including one inside the 20.

The Tigers - Defensively
H-SC has yielded just 282 yards of total offense in two games, including 80 yards on the ground and 202 yards through the air, while making four interceptions. Phil Pullen and freshman defensive back Will Pickren/Mt Pleasant, SC lead the Tigers with nine tackles each, including two for loss, two quarterback hurries and a pass breakup by Pullen. Senior linebacker Brendan Weinberg/Apex, NC and sophomore linebacker Will Shulleeta/Henrico each have eight tackles, including two for loss and a half-sack by Weinberg, along with an interception by Shulleeta. Senior defensive end Tyler Lohman/Centreville, junior linebacker Stephen Cash/Kill Devil Hills, NC and freshman defensive lineman Kevin Gholson/Montpelier have each contributed seven tackles, including one for loss and a fumble recovery by Lohman—Cash with one tackle for loss and a half-sack, and Gholson with 1.5 tackles for loss and one interception. Junior linebacker Peyton Carneal/Hayes and junior defensive back Noah Dowdy/Powhatan add one interception apiece, while Carneal has one tackle for loss and one sack, as well.

Among the ODAC & National Leaders
H-SC is the Division III leader in total defense (141.0) and scoring defense (0.0), while tied for first in red zone defense (0.00). The Tigers are fourth in DIII passing yards allowed (101.0), while fifth in rushing defense (40.0) and passing efficiency defense (82.06). Tanner Bernard leads the ODAC and is seventh in DIII completion percentage (66.0), while first in the ODAC and 17th in DIII passing efficiency (136.6), third in the ODAC and 13th in DIII completions per game (17.5), third in the ODAC and 24th in DIII passing yards per game (175.5), fourth in the ODAC and 30th in DIII passing yards (351), and fourth in the ODAC and 31st in DIII total offense (183.0). Kaleb Smith leads the ODAC and is 12th in DIII receptions per game (6.0), while fourth in the ODAC and 71st in DIII all purpose yards (88.0), and fifth in the ODAC and 56th in DIII receiving yards per game (49.0). Melik Frost is second in the ODAC and ninth in DIII rushing touchdowns (3), while third in the ODAC and 20th in DIII touchdowns (3), third in the ODAC and 23rd in DIII scoring (10.0), third in the ODAC and 27th in DIII total points (18), fourth in the ODAC and 36th in DIII rushing yards (127), and fourth in the ODAC and 28th in DIII rushing yards per game (63.5). Dillon Costello is second in the ODAC and 18th in DIII receiving touchdowns (2), while fifth in the ODAC and 45th in DIII scoring (6.0). Ed Newman is third in the ODAC and 22nd in DIII receptions per game (5.0), while third in the ODAC and 48th in DIII receiving yards per game (54.5). Cole Becker is fourth in the ODAC and 29th in DIII rush yards per carry (4.52). Tyler Lohman is tied for first in the ODAC and tied for fifth in DIII fumbles recovered (1). Peyton Carneal, Noah Dowdy, Kevin Gholson and Will Shulleeta are tied for first in the ODAC and tied for 23rd in DIII interceptions (1).

Last Game vs. Guilford (10/26/19, at GC)
Cole Becker ran for a career-high 172 yards on a career-high 35 carries with two touchdowns, but it wasn't enough as H-SC dropped a hard-fought 37-27 ODAC decision on the road at GC. Austin Murphy, making his first collegiate start, passed for a game-high 192 yards and one touchdown for the visiting Tigers, while Rhett Andersen kicked a school-record 49-yard field goal, and Major Morgan caught his first touchdown pass of the season. Dillon Costello had nine receptions for 58 yards, while Morgan added five catches for 33 yards and the touchdown. Brendan Weinberg had 10 tackles, while Griffin Davis added nine tackles and one interception for the Tigers.

GC had three individuals combine to pass for 208 yards (13-24) and four touchdowns with one interception—Teddy Gassert had 131 yards (4-10) and two touchdowns with no interceptions. Desmond McDowell had 96 yards rushing on 16 carries. Jermaine Russell finished with 82 yards receiving on six catches and two touchdowns, adding a 98-yard kickoff return touchdown, while Tre Alexander added two receptions for 65 yards and two touchdowns. Khayree Lundy had a game-high 12 tackles, including two for loss and one sack, while Ty Walker had eight tackles, including one for loss and one sack, as well.

The Quakers led 21-6 at halftime, before the Tigers outscored the hosts 21-16 in the second half.
