H-SC dropped a 37-13 non-conference road decision
at Emory & Henry on Oct. 16. The visiting Tigers fell behind 20-0 in the first quarter and trailed 23-7 at halftime against the host Wasps, before closing to within 23-13 after three quarters, only to witness the hosts score two fourth-quarter touchdowns. FC got a game-winning field goal from 35 yards with just three-seconds remaining for a 24-23 home win past visiting Shenandoah on Oct. 16.

H-SC is led by the veteran head coach who is the second-winningest coach in school history with 137 victories (137-80), including 15 winning campaigns, while a five-time ODAC Coach of the Year. His program is 88-47 in ODAC games, while earning five ODAC Championships and making six NCAA Division III Football Championship playoff appearances

The young series is
tied at 3-3, including a
49-21 win by H-SC this past spring (4/3) in the third-place game of the ODAC's first-ever Football Championship Weekend. FC had won three-straight prior to the most recent contest. The Tigers and Panthers first met on the gridiron in 2011, resulting in a 38-14 home win for H-SC.
Scouting The Tigers
H-SC is led offensively by senior quarterback and team captain
Tanner Bernard (Lynchburg). Through six games, Bernard has passed for an ODAC-best 1,589 yards (113-184) and nine touchdowns with six interceptions.
The running game features the tandem of senior
Kaleb Smith (Rocky Mount) and sophomore
Josh Jones (South Hill). Smith missed the opening game, but has rushed for 296 yards on 63 attempts (4.7) with three touchdowns, adding 218 yards receiving on 19 receptions for a team-best 514 all purpose yards. Jones has rushed for 193 yards on 52 carries with three touchdowns, adding 146 yards receiving on 15 catches.
Sophomore wide receiver
Braeden Bowling (Cary, NC), fifth-year wide receiver and second-year team captain
Dillon Costello (Haymarket), and fifth-year slot receiver
Nick Kallivokas (Purcellville) lead the receiving group. Bowling has 489 yards receiving on 28 receptions with two touchdowns, Costello has 382 yards receiving on 24 catches with three touchdowns, and Kallivokas has 166 yards receiving on six catches with three touchdowns.
Sophomore safety
Will Pickren (Mt Pleasant, SC) leads the Tigers on defense with 69 tackles, including four for loss, with two interceptions and four pass breakups. Fifth-year linebacker and team captain
Brendan Weinberg (Apex, NC) has 63 tackles, including eight for loss, with one sack. Sophomore safety
James-Ryan Salvi (Troutville) adds 47 tackles, including three for loss, one interception and a forced fumble.
Junior placekicker
Jack Breedlove (Atlanta, GA) is a perfect 10-10 on PATs, and 3-5 on field goals, including a collegiate-best of 39 yards. Sophomore placekicker
Palmer Smith (Chesapeake) is a perfect 8-8 on PATs, and 3-4 on field goals, including a collegiate-best of 31 yards. Sophomore left-footed punter
George Langhammer (Roanoke) has averaged 39.2 yards on 20 punts, including a collegiate-best of 67 yards, with three fair caught, three downed inside the 20 and one blocked.
Sophomore wide receiver
Brice Wilson (Lovingston) has averaged 28.0 yards on nine kick returns, including a collegiate-best of 47 yards. Classmate and wide receiver
Iceysis Lewis (Radiant) has averaged 23.6 yards on 17 kick returns, including a collegiate-best of 72 yards.
Scouting The Panthers
FC is expected to be led offensively by senior quarterback Titus Jones, freshman running back Zac Smiley and sophomore wide receiver Tmahdae Penn. Through six games, Jones has passed for 1,429 yards (97-158) and an ODAC-best 12 touchdowns with only two interceptions—adding 169 yards on the ground with two touchdowns. Smiley has rushed for 276 yards on 75 attempts (3.7) with two touchdowns, adding 50 yards receiving on eight receptions. Penn has 610 yards receiving on 27 receptions and an ODAC-best nine touchdowns. Senior linebacker Billy Higgins and junior linebacker Drew Hill have 61 and 50 tackles, respectively, including 3.5 for loss by Higgins, while Hill has two for loss and one sack. Freshman placekicker Seth Deaton is 16-17 on PATs, and 7-10 on field goals, including a long of 45 yards. Freshman punter Josh Luckett has averaged 39.8 yards on 32 punts, including a long of 60 yards, with 12 fair caught and eight inside the 20.

Will Pickren ranks second in the ODAC and tied for eighth in DIII total tackles per game (11.5).

Strength of Schedule
The overall combined record of H-SC opponents this year is 41-22 (.651), including 25-12 (.676) for those schools that the Tigers have already played this fall. Upcoming archrival Randolph-Macon is ranked No. 25 in this week's
AFCA Division III Coaches Poll, while previous foes Baldwin Wallace (49) and Washington and Lee (2) each received votes this week.
50th Anniversary/Reunion - 1970 & 1971
In addition to it being Homecoming Weekend at the College, the Athletic Department is also recognizing the 1970 and 1971 football Tigers who played in the Knute Rockne Bowl at the conclusion of each of those seasons. At the time, the bowl game was played as the NCAA College Division (II) East Regional Championship.
The
1970 Tigers finished 9-2, winning the Mason-Dixon Conference Championship with a 4-0 record, before falling to Montclair State (NJ) 7-6 in the Knute Rockne Bowl on November 28, 1970 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The
1971 Tigers finished 10-1, also winning the Mason-Dixon title with another perfect 4-0 record, before falling to Bridgeport (CT) 17-12 in the Knute Rockne Bowl on November 26, 1971—once again in Atlantic City.
The teams were led by Hall of Fame head coach J. Stokeley Fulton, and defensive coordinator (and future Hall of Fame head coach at Emory & Henry) Lou Wacker. The Tigers had the top-ranked scoring defense in all NCAA divisions during those two seasons ... the 1970 team yielded just 2.8 points per game during the regular season with six shutouts, and ranked third in total defense (145.0) ... while the 1971 team allowed only 3.4 points per game during the regular season with five shutouts, and also ranked first in total defense (115.6).
