H-SC dropped a
hard-fought 32-30 decision at home to visiting Washington and Lee on Oct. 2 on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. The Generals converted four of four two-point conversions on the day and stopped the Tigers on their lone two-point attempt with just 29-seconds remaining for the dramatic outcome. E&H dropped a similarly difficult 34-31 decision on the road at Randolph-Macon on Oct. 9 in Ashland. The Wasps had rallied from a 24-14 deficit at halftime to take a 31-27 lead early in the fourth quarter ... but the Yellow Jackets scored the game-winning touchdown with just 19-seconds remaining for the victory.

H-SC is led by the veteran head coach who is the second-winningest coach in school history with 137 victories (137-79), including 15 winning campaigns, while a five-time Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Coach of the Year. His program is 88-47 in ODAC games, while earning five ODAC Championships and making six NCAA Division III Football Championship playoff appearances

The Series
E&H narrowly leads the overall series between the two schools,
39-37, including a 56-17 home win the last time they played in 2019. H-SC, however, is 16-4 against the Wasps under the direction of Coach Favret, including 14 consecutive wins between 2002 and 2015. The Tigers and E&H first met on the gridiron in 1922, resulting in a 13-0 home shutout for H-SC.
Scouting The Tigers
H-SC is led offensively by senior quarterback and team captain
Tanner Bernard (Lynchburg). Through five games, Bernard has passed for an ODAC-best 1,426 yards (97-147) and eight touchdowns with four interceptions.
The running game features the tandem of senior
Kaleb Smith (Rocky Mount) and sophomore
Josh Jones (South Hill). Smith missed the opening game, but has rushed for 263 yards on 52 attempts (5.1) with three touchdowns, adding 201 yards receiving on 17 receptions. Jones has rushed for 193 yards on 52 carries with three touchdowns, adding 146 yards receiving on 15 catches.
Sophomore wide receiver
Braeden Bowling (Cary, NC), fifth-year wide receiver and second-year team captain
Dillon Costello (Haymarket), and fifth-year slot receiver
Nick Kallivokas (Purcellville) lead the receiving group. Bowling has 444 yards receiving on 24 receptions with two touchdowns, Costello has 359 yards receiving on 22 catches with two touchdowns, and Kallivokas has 137 yards receiving on five catches with three touchdowns.
Sophomore safety
Will Pickren (Mt Pleasant, SC) leads the Tigers on defense with 58 tackles, including four for loss, with one interception and four pass breakups. Fifth-year linebacker and team captain
Brendan Weinberg (Apex, NC) has 54 tackles, including eight for loss, with one sack. Sophomore safety
James-Ryan Salvi (Troutville) adds 37 tackles, including two for loss, one interception and a forced fumble.
Junior placekicker
Jack Breedlove (Atlanta, GA) is a perfect 10-10 on PATs, and 3-5 on field goals, including a collegiate-best of 39 yards. Sophomore placekicker
Palmer Smith (Chesapeake) is a perfect 7-7 on PATs, and 1-2 on field goals, including a collegiate-best of 31 yards.
Sophomore left-footed punter
George Langhammer (Roanoke) has averaged an ODAC-best 40.7 yards on 18 punts, including a collegiate-best of 67 yards, with three fair caught and three downed inside the 20.
Sophomore wide receiver
Iceysis Lewis (Radiant) has averaged 25.6 yards on 12 kick returns, including a collegiate-best of 72 yards. Classmate and wide receiver
Brice Wilson (Lovingston) has also averaged 25.6 yards ... on eight kick returns, including a collegiate-best of 43 yards.
Scouting The Wasps
E&H is expected to be led offensively by quarterback Kyle Short, running back Devontae Jordan and wide receiver Kashawn Cosey. Through five games, Short has passed for 944 yards (75-129) and nine touchdowns with four interceptions. Jordan is already approaching 1,000 yards on the season as he has rushed for 945 yards on 140 attempts (6.8) with 13 touchdowns, adding 71 yards receiving on three receptions. Cosey has 28 receptions for 287 yards and two touchdowns.
Linebacker Brent Butler and defensive end Jay Swegheimer have 35 and 30 tackles, respectively, including 1.5 for loss by Butler, while Swegheimer has 6.5 for loss, 2.5 sacks, one interception, one pass breakup and four quarterback hurries.
Placekicker Cameron Jones is 26-28 on PATs, and 3-4 on field goals, including a long of 37 yards. Punter Ethan Muncy has averaged 43.3 yards on six punts, including a long of 60 yards, with three fair caught and two inside the 20.
E&H, like H-SC, was a charter member of the ODAC; however, the Wasps are now transitioning to NCAA Division II and will become members of the South Atlantic Conference in 2022-23.
