Hampden-Sydney Tied For Eighth At The Capitol City Classic

PRATTVILLE, Ala. -- Sophomore Luke Combs (Newport News posted a 36-hole score of 73-72—145 on Monday to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a team score of 305-289—594 at the Capitol City Classic being played at the RTJ Golf Trail at Capitol Hill in Prattville, Alabama. The Tigers are tied for eighth among the 18 teams in the prestigious collegiate golf event, while Combs is tied for 19th individually among the 95 golfers.

Combs had two eagles, four birdies and 20 pars during his two rounds at the par 72, 7,326-yard Senator course, including a "three" on the par 5, 530-yard eighth hole during round one, and another "three" on the par 5, 563-yard fifth hole during round two. He is being followed by sophomores Oliver Tobin (Charlotte, NC) (74-76—150, T-40th) and Groves Williams (Greenville, SC) (78-72—150, T-40th), junior team captain Jack Barnes (Manakin Sabot) (80-71—151, T-46th), along with sophomore Garnett Hall (Richmond) (84-74—158, T-74th). Tobin had seven birdies and 16 pars. Williams had five birdies and 21 pars. Barnes had six birdies and 19 pars. Hall had three birdies and 18 pars.

The competitive tournament field features 10 teams that are ranked among the Top 25 nationally in the latest SCOREBOARD powered by clippd NCAA Division III Men's Golf rankings, including six of the Top 10, as event host and top-ranked Huntingdon (AL) College is leading with its 11-under par 283-282—565. HC's Myles Cunningham is the individual leader at eight-under par 69-67—136. The Tigers (305-289) are tied for eighth with second-ranked Washington and Lee (300-294), and seventh-ranked Emory (GA) University (306-288).

H-SC will continue and complete its competition in the two-day, 54-hole tournament on Tuesday, April 7, with tee times beginning at 9 a.m. in Alabama.
