HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College (4-0, 2-0 ODAC) has moved up four spots to No. 21 nationally in this week's
American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) D3 Coaches Poll, presented by Hudl. It equals the highest ranking for the Tigers in the AFCA Poll since September 17, 2012 when also ranked 21st. The Garnet & Grey are ranked 24th in this week's
D3football.com Top 25, announced on Sunday.
H-SC, under the direction of second-year head coach
Vince Luvara, has won its first four games of the season for the first time since 2010. The Tigers have outscored their opposition 187-61, including a 38-9 season-opening road win at Delaware Valley (PA) on September 6, a 38-31 home win past Washington & Jefferson (PA) on Sept. 13, a 42-7 home win past Shenandoah in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener on Sept. 20 and a 69-14 conference road win at Guilford (NC) on Sept. 27. DelVal was receiving votes in both the AFCA and D3football.com polls, while W&J was receiving votes in the D3football.com poll.
Defending NCAA Division III National Champion North Central (IL) (3-0) is ranked first with 1275 points and all 51 first place votes. The Cardinals are followed among the Top 10 by Mount Union (OH) (3-0), Johns Hopkins (MD) (3-0), St. John's (MN) (3-0), UW-Lacrosse (2-0), Salisbury (MD) (3-0), Hardin-Simmons (TX) (3-0), UW-Platteville (3-0), Wartburg (IA) (4-0) and UW-Whitewater (3-0).
Christopher Newport (3-0) moved into the Top 25 this week at number 24, while Randolph-Macon (3-1, 2-0) is receiving votes among the only other Virginia and/or ODAC schools ranked or receiving votes in the AFCA poll.
