H-SC took a
42-7 home win past ODAC opponent Shenandoah on Sept. 20 on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. The Tigers led 21-0 after one quarter and 28-7 at halftime, before outscoring the visitors 14-0 in the second half. The Garnet & Grey are 3-0 for the first fall season since 2011 and ranked nationally for the first time since 2014. GC lost 35-7 on the road at Washington and Lee on Sept. 20. H-SC is competing in its 131st season of football and 50th year as a charter member of the ODAC. GC joined the conference as a full-time member beginning with the 1991-92 academic year.

Head Coach Vince Luvara
H-SC is led by the second-year head coach who took over the program on December 7, 2023. The former defensive coordinator at Washington & Jefferson (PA) College from 2016-23, Luvara is the 29th head coach in the 131-year history of the storied Hampden-Sydney program. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native is no stranger to NCAA Division III, having played four years at Allegheny (PA) College and coached one year at Allegheny and two years at Misericordia (PA) University—each school members of Division III. Luvara is 8-5 at the College.
The Series
H-SC leads the overall series against GC, 50-24, including five-straight wins and 23 victories in the last 25 games played between the two schools. The Tigers defeated the Quakers
31-0 last October 5 at Everett Stadium. H-SC and GC first met on the gridiron in 1920, and the Tigers are 27-7 against the Quakers since they joined the ODAC in 1991.

Carter Sido (Dallas, TX) has passed for 608 yards (35-66-3) and eight touchdowns with three interceptions thrown in three games—adding 104 yards rushing (5.2). He leads the ODAC in passing touchdowns, passing efficiency (161.3, total offense (712) and total offense per game (237.3), is third in passing yards and passing yards per game (202.7), and fifth in completion percentage (53.0). Carter ranks fifth in Division III passing yards per completion (17.37), 23rd in passing touchdowns, 25th in yards per pass attempt (9.21), 38th in passing efficiency and 40th in points responsible for (48).
Junior running back
Terry Hicks (Clayton, NC)Â has rushed for 385 yards on 77 attempts (5.0) and five touchdowns, adding two receptions for 34 yards. He leads the ODAC in rushing touchdowns, total touchdowns, total points (30) and scoring per game (10.0), is second in rushing yards, third in rushing yards per game and all-purpose yards (419) and fourth in all-purpose yards per game (139.7). Hicks ranks 18th in DIII rushing yards, 21st in rushing yards per game, 24th in total touchdowns, 25th in total points and 42nd in scoring per game.

Sophomore quarterback Luke Hyatt has passed for 530 yards (46-82-6) and four touchdowns with six interceptions thrown in three games. Junior running back Evan Sullivan has rushed for 68 yards on 30 attempts (2.3) and one touchdown. Senior running back Josh Campbell has rushed for 65 yards on 21 attempts (3.1).Junior wide receiver Shane Shaprio has 26 receptions for 320 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore wide receiver Cameron Campbell has 14 receptions for 146 yards and one touchdown. Robert Clarke is the program's sixth-straight
semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy®, college football's premier scholar-athlete award. Robert is among 177 semifinalists from all divisions, while one of three from the ODAC and among the 33 elected from Division III. He follows in the footsteps of Tyler Howerton '21, Kaleb Smith '22, Michael Harris '23, George Langhammer '24 and
Will Thomas '25—Howerton went on to become one of 12 finalists for the prestigious award in 2020. Robert is a Dean's List student majoring in economics and business with a minor in rhetoric, and has attained a 3.59 GPA.

Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®
Carter Sido was nominated for the 2025 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, recognizing college football student-athletes and head coaches for their commitment to community service and leadership beyond the gridiron. He devoted 40-plus hours of service to the following causes during 2024-25: The Big Event, Literacy Days and the Brother4Brother Mentorship Program. Carter is also a member of QBs vs Cancer, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a common objective to raise money in the fight against cancer—his efforts benefit Breast Cancer Awareness and Research. Unfortunately, he did not make the final roster of 23 award recipients announced on September 16.
Hampden-Sydney Football
H-SC has a 130-plus year history of football, amassing 586 wins since beginning in 1892. The Tigers have experienced great success over the years, including nine ODAC Championships, 10 Mason-Dixon Conference Championships, seven NCAA Division III Championship Playoff appearances, 88 All-America selections, 13 Academic All-America selections and 223 First Team All-ODAC honorees. H-SC also played in the 1970 and 1971 Knute Rockne Bowls (NCAA College Division East Regional Championship).
From Division III To FBS Memphis
Ryan Silverfield '03 became the 25th head coach in the University of Memphis football history in December 2019 and began his tenure by leading the Tigers into their first major bowl game appearance: the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic in Dallas. He is currently 46-21 overall in his sixth season at the helm of the Tigers, including 4-0 in 2025. Silverfield led Memphis to a record of 11-2 in 2024, including a 42-37 win past West Virginia in the Scooter's Coffee Frisco Bowl on December 17, 2024 at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas. Ryan coached four seasons as an undergraduate at H-SC, starting as an offensive assistant in 2000, serving as the defensive line coach during 2001 and 2002, before coaching the tight ends and H-backs in 2003.
