HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Junior running back Terry Hicks (Clayton, NC) rushed for a game-high and season-high 192 yards on a career-high 31 attempts and a career-high three touchdowns, and senior running back Joseph Gonzalez (Spotsylvania) added a career-high 106 yards rushing on a career-high 18 attempts and one touchdown, while sophomore wide receiver McCallum Wright (Raleigh, NC) and sophomore running back Brice Pool (Danville) each scored their first collegiate touchdowns, as (RV)Hampden-Sydney College took a decisive 42-7 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football home win past Shenandoah University on Saturday afternoon on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. The host Tigers (3-0, 1-0) led 21-0 after one quarter and 28-7 at halftime, before outscoring the visiting Hornets (2-1, 0-1) 14-0 in the second half. The Garnet & Grey are 3-0 for the first time since the non-traditional and shortened spring COVID-19 season of 2021—and for the first fall season since 2011.

"I'm really happy about the team effort today," said second-year head coach Vince Luvara. "We had a ton of guys and step up and make plays against a very good football team."

H-SC, receiving votes this week in both the AFCA D3 Coaches Poll (44) and the D3football.com Top 25 (3), set the tone early as the Tigers' defense forced a three-and-out on the game's opening possession before the Garnet & Grey promptly drove 85 yards on 13 plays culminating with Hicks' first touchdown of the day from one-yard out. Junior punter/placekicker Camden Richardson (Midlothian) added the first of his six PAT kicks for the early 7-0 advantage at 9:03 of the first quarter. The drive included a 29-yard pass play from senior quarterback and team captain Carter Sido (Dallas, TX) to senior wide receiver and team captain Mason Cunningham (Arlington), as well as a 21-yard run by Gonzalez.

H-SC's defense forced another three-and-out on SU's second possession, and this time the Tigers drove 80 yards on 12 plays with Hicks scoring on a three-yard touchdown run and the lead was 14-0 at 2:54 of the quarter. Hicks had runs of nine, 10 and 19 yards, Cunningham had a reception for 16 yards and senior wide receiver Jordan Jackson (Fredericksburg) had a 10-yard catch.

A third consecutive three-and-out forced by the Garnet & Grey defense setup the third touchdown of the opening quarter as Sido found McCallum racing down the middle of the field for a 54-yard scoring play with just 26-seconds on the clock and a 21-0 advantage after 15 minutes. It was McCallum's first collegiate reception, as well.

SU managed its only score of the contest after an interception and return of 17 yards by Matt Conroy put the ball at the H-SC three-yard line. It took three plays, but Jalen Redfearn was able to score on a one-yard run at the 10:00 mark with Carson Gallant adding the PAT kick for a 21-7 contest.

The two teams traded possessions before the Tigers drove 92 yards on 13 plays that ended with—who else—Hicks scoring on a seven-yard touchdown run with 25-seconds left in the opening half. Hicks started the drive with a 14-yard run, and totaled 49 yards on the ground during the possession, while Sido added a 14-yard run, as well, among 27 yards rushing on the drive to provide for a 28-7 lead at halftime.

H-SC took the second half kickoff and promptly went 72 yards on eight plays with Gonzalez scoring on a tackle-breaking 26-yard touchdown run at 11:29. The drive was all on the ground with Hicks covering the first 15 yards, Gonzalez following with 13 yards, Sido adding a 13-yard run, and Gonzalez covering the final 31 yards for the 35-7 third-quarter advantage.

The Tigers added a fourth-quarter touchdown on a 92-yard, 17-play drive with sophomore quarterback Connor Creech (Winston-Salem, NC) leading the offense. Hicks had an 18-yard run early in the possession before exiting for the day, while Creech had runs of seven, 14 and seven yards, freshman running back Will Foley (Virginia Beach) added 13 yards on the ground, before Pool took the first two rushing attempts of his collegiate career for 11 and eight yards—the latter to the end zone at 4:57—providing for the final 42-7 margin of victory.

H-SC totaled 566 yards of total offense, including 443 yards rushing—the highest team rushing total since 1991 (October 26) when posting 613 yards at Davidson (NC)—as Hicks rushed for his game-high and season-high 192 yards on a career-high 31 attempts and a career-high three touchdowns. Gonzalez added his career-high 106 yards rushing on a career-high 18 attempts and one touchdown. Foley finished with a career-high 54 yards rushing on 11 attempts, and Pool added a career-high 19 yards rushing on two attempts and one touchdown. Sido passed for a game-high 119 yards (7-14-2) and one touchdown with one interception, adding 43 yards rushing on five attempts. Creech passed for four yards (1-1-0), adding a career-high 31 yards rushing on four attempts. Wright had a game-high and career-high 54 yards receiving on one reception and one touchdown, and Cunningham had a game-high 54 yards receiving on three receptions. Sophomore wide receiver Phillip Dube (Glen Allen) averaged 24.5 yards on two kick returns.

The Tigers limited SU to 167 yards of total offense—including just 66 yards passing, as sophomore linebacker Frank Brewer (Charlotte, NC), senior linebacker and team captain Robert Clarke (Atlanta, GA) and sophomore defensive tackle Kenen Barlowe (North Chesterfield) each had six tackles to lead the Garnet & Grey's stout defense, with Brewer adding one tackle for loss on a sack. Sophomore safety Mitch Ladamus (Fort Mill, SC) had five tackles, two pass breakups and one quarterback hurry, while freshman safety Bristan DeRocher (Marietta, GA) and senior defensive lineman Wyatt Croson (Warrenton) each added four tackles with DeRocher securing his first collegiate interception, as well. Sophomore linebacker Max Bidou (Mechanicsville) and sophomore cornerback Parks Cromwell (Charlotte, NC) each had three tackles with Bidou registering a tackle for loss on a sack and Cromwell adding a pass breakup.

Mason Anderson passed for 42 yards (6-15-1) for SU with one interception, and Jack Pearson passed for 24 yards (2-7-0). Redfearn, who had run for 247 yards on 38 attempts against the Tigers a year ago, finished with 79 yards rushing on 16 attempts and one touchdown. Roge't Walker had 27 yards receiving on three receptions. Conroy finished with a game-high 22 tackles and one interception for the Hornets.

It was Hall of Fame Weekend at the College as the 38th class for the Athletic Hall of Fame was inducted on Friday night, and recognized at halftime of the football game, as well. The honorees included two-time Golf All-American Brian Burt '16, two-time Lacrosse All-American Ward Smith '99 and three-time All-ODAC Basketball honoree Khobi Williamson '14, along with a Special Citation for former All-ODAC Basketball standout and current University of Virginia men's basketball head coach Ryan Odom '96. In addition, the 2005 Baseball Team that advanced to that year's NCAA Division III Championship World Series was also inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame.

H-SC will play on the road at ODAC member Guilford (NC) College next Saturday, September 27, at 1 p.m. in Greensboro, North Carolina.
