SAVANNAH, Ga. -- The No. 16 Hampden-Sydney College Golf team posted a final round of 294 on Tuesday for a 54-hole score of 295-299-294—888 to finish in a tie for 14th among 20 teams at the
Savannah Invitational played at The Club at Savannah Harbor in Savannah, Georgia. Senior
Rece Lott (Fort Worth, TX) led the Tigers with his two-over par 72-73-73—218 that tied for 24th individually among the 100 collegiate golfers.
Lott posted five birdies and seven pars during his final round on the par 72, 6,999-yard layout, finishing the tournament with 10 birdies and 30 pars. He was followed by freshman
Luke Combs (Newport News) (73-76-74—223, T-48th), senior
John Hutcheson (Edina, MN) (74-74-76—224, T-54th), senior All-American and team captain
Nick Rubino (Charlotte, NC) (76-76-75—227, T-68th) and sophomore
Jack Barnes (Manakin Sabot) (79-78-72—229, T-77th). Combs also had five birdies and seven pars in round three, finishing with 13 birdies and 22 pars. Hutcheson had two birdies and 12 pars, finishing with six birdies and 37 pars. Rubino had four birdies and nine pars, finishing with seven birdies and 30 pars. Barnes had five birdies and eight pars, finishing with eight birdies and 26 pars.
No. 1 Washington and Lee University won the event with its nine-under par 288-282-285—855, while W&L's Johnathan McEwen took individual medalist honors at eight-under par 70-68-70—208. The extremely competitive tournament field included fifteen of the 20 schools participating ranked among the Top 25.
H-SC will compete again when hosting
The Tiger Invitational on March 9-10, a 36-hole tournament to be played at the Forest Creek Golf Club in Pinehurst, North Carolina.
The Tigers' B Team was in Savannah, as well, competing in the Port City Classic—posting a final round of 300 for a 54-hole score of 303-302-300—905 to finish in a tie for fourth among the 17 teams in that tournament. Freshman
Oliver Tobin (Charlotte, NC) led the group with his six-over par 75-71-73—219 that tied for second individually for a runner-up finish among the 93 golfers.
Tobin posted four birdies and 10 pars during his final round on the par 71, 6,739-yard layout, finishing the event with eight birdies and 34 pars. He was followed by sophomore
Joseph Weinstein (Midlothian) (74-80-73—227, T17th), junior
Pierce Lambert (Hartfield) (77-76-76—229, T-27th), senior team captain
Knox Sirmans (Rome, GA) (77-76-79—232, T-36th) and junior
Cole Wright (Wake Forest, NC) (79-79-78—236, T-55th). Weinstein had two birdies and 12 pars in round three, finishing with five birdies and 33 pars. Lambert had one eagle, two birdies and six pars, finishing with the eagle, seven birdies and 23 pars. Sirmans had 11 pars, finishing with one birdie and 36 pars. Wright had two birdies and 10 pars, finishing with seven birdies and 27 pars.
Carnegie (PA) Mellon University's B Team (298-298-295) and Oglethorpe (GA) University's B Team (298-299-294) each posted scores of 891, while Ryan Dannegger of CMU was the individual medalist at four-over par 72-72-73—217.
H-SC's B Team will also compete again when hosting
