JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. -- The nationally-ranked No. 15 Hampden-Sydney College Golf team posted a final-round score of 288 on Sunday for a 54-hole team score of 297-295-288—880 to finish 10th among 30 teams at the annual
Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational played at the Jekyll Island Golf Club in Georgia. Senior All-American
Nick Rubino (Charlotte, NC) led the Tigers with his even par 73-71-72—216 that tied for 15th individually among the 150 collegiate golfers.
Rubino posted three birdies and 12 pars during his even par round of 72 on day three at the par 72, 6,700-yard Pine Lakes layout. He was followed by sophomore
Jack Barnes (Manakin Sabot) (73-73-72—218, T-29th), freshman
Luke Combs (Newport News) (73-77-71—221, T-44th), along with seniors
John Hutcheson (Edina, MN) (78-75-73—226, T-78th) and
Rece Lott (Fort Worth, TX) (79-76-76—231, T-118th). Barnes had four birdies and 10 pars during his third round. Combs had three birdies and 13 pars. Hutcheson had two birdies and 13 pars, while Lott had two birdies and 11 pars.
Rubino tied for fifth among the tournament field in pars (38) and tied for seventh in par 4 scoring (3.97, -1). Barnes tied for third in eagles (1) and tied for eighth in par 5 scoring (4.33, -8). Combs tied for 13th in par 5 scoring (4.50, -6).
The large and highly-competitive tournament field featured 16 teams that are ranked among the Top 25 nationally in the latest
SCOREBOARD powered by clippd NCAA Division III Men's Golf rankings, including seven of the Top 10, though 11th-ranked Huntingdon (AL) won the event with its nine-under par 290-287-278—855. Jonathan McEwan of second-ranked Washington and Lee was the individual medalist at 10-under par 69-69-68—206. The 15th-ranked Tigers finished ahead of three schools ranked higher than them, and their third round of 288 tied for eighth-best on the day, helping them move up four spots in the standings.
