JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. -- The nationally-ranked No. 15 Hampden-Sydney College Golf team posted a first-round score of 297 on Friday to stand 14th among 30 teams at the annual
Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational being played at the Jekyll Island Golf Club in Georgia. Senior All-American
Nick Rubino (Charlotte, NC), sophomore
Jack Barnes (Manakin Sabot) and freshman
Luke Combs (Newport News) are leading the Tigers with their respective rounds of one-over par 73 that has them tied for 34th individually among the 150 collegiate golfers.

Rubino posted two birdies and 13 pars during his opening round on the par 72, 6,700-yard Pine Lakes layout, while Barnes had three birdies and 12 pars, and Combs had two birdies and 13 pars, as well. They are being followed by seniors
John Hutcheson (Edina, MN) (78, T-113th) and
Rece Lott (Fort Worth, TX) (79, T-124th). Hutcheson posted two birdies and nine pars, while Lott had one birdie and 10 pars.

IWU's Griffin Pohl and Jonas De Leon of 16th-ranked Redlands (CA) are the individual co-leaders at six-under par 66. The 15th-ranked Tigers are currently ahead of three schools ranked higher than them after day one, and only two shots out of the Top 10 and seven shots out of the top five.

H-SC will continue its competition in the three-day, 54-hole tournament on Saturday, March 22, with tee-times beginning at 1:31 p.m. in Georgia.
