No. 16 Hampden-Sydney Finishes Fifth At The Tiger Invitational | Tigers' B Golf Team Finishes 19th At The Same Tournament

FINAL RESULTS (TIGER INVITATIONAL)

PINEHURST, N.C. -- The No. 16 Hampden-Sydney College Golf team posted a final round of 288 on Monday for a 36-hole team score of 296-288—584 to finish fifth among 20 teams at their own Tiger Invitational played at the Forest Creek Golf Club in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Freshman Luke Combs (Newport News) led the Tigers with his one-under par 70-73—143 that tied for eighth individually among the 100 collegiate golfers.

Combs posted four birdies and eight pars during his final round on the par 72, 6,701-yard layout. He was followed by seniors John Hutcheson (Edina, MN) (72-72—144, T-12th), Rece Lott (Fort Worth, TX) (75-70—145, T-17th) and All-American and team captain Nick Rubino (Charlotte, NC) (79-73—152, T-53rd), along with sophomore Jack Barnes (Manakin Sabot) (80-77—157, T-75). Hutchinson had three birdies and 12 pars, Lott had four birdies and 12 pars, Rubino had two birdies and 13 pars, and Barnes had three birdies and 10 pars.

Combs tied for fourth among the tournament field in par 4 scoring (3.90, -2), tied for eighth in birdies (8) and tied for ninth in par 3 scoring (3.00, E). Hutcheson tied for sixth in par 4 scoring (3.95, -1), tied for ninth in par 3 scoring (3.00, E) and tied for 14th in birdies (7). Rubino tied for 16th in pars (24). Lott tied for 18th in both par 4 scoring (4.05, +1) and par 5 scoring (4.88, -1).

No. 2 Methodist (NC) University won the event with its nine-under par 281-286—567, while MU's Chase Watts took individual medalist honors at 10-under par 66-68—134.

H-SC will compete again at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational on March 21-23, a 54-hole tournament to be played at the Jekyll Island Golf Club in Georgia.

The Tigers' B Team competed in the same event, posting a final round of 306 for a 36-hole team score of 318-306—624 to finish 19th among the 20 teams. Sophomore Joseph Weinstein (Midlothian) led the group with his 78-75—153 that tied for 57th individually among the 100 golfers.

Weinstein posted three birdies and nine pars during his final round, and was followed by senior team captain Knox Sirmans (Rome, GA) (79-78—157, T-75th), freshman Oliver Tobin (Charlotte, NC) (83-76—159, T85th) and sophomore Peyton Lambert (Hartfield) (82-77—159, T-85th), along with junior Pierce Lambert (Hartfield) (79-82--161, T-88th). Sirmans had two birdies and 11 pars, Tobin had one birdie and 13 pars, Peyton Lambert had five birdies and six pars, and tied for eighth in birdies (8), while Pierce Lambert had three birdies and four pars.

FINAL RESULTS (INVITATIONAL AT WHISPERING PINES)

H-SC's C and D Golf Teams competed at the Hampden-Sydney Invitational at Whispering Pines played at the Country Club of Whispering Pines in Pinehurst, North Carolina. The C Team posted a 36-hole team score of 312-333—645 to finish 10th among 16 teams. The D Team posted a 36-hole team score of 324-326—650 to finish 12th among the 16 teams. Freshman Garnett Hall (Richmond) led the C Team with his four-over par 73-75—148 that tied for fifth individually among the 92 collegiate golfers on the par 72, 6,974-yard layout.

Hall was followed by junior Cole Wright (Wake Forest, NC) (76-81—157, T-37th), senior Brody Smith (Yorktown) (82-88—170, T-74th), along with freshman Sean Acree (Chesterfield) (87-89—176, T-84th). Freshman Groves Williams (Greenville, SC) (81) withdrew due to illness.

Sophomore Nick Bernard (Southern Shores, NC) led the D Team with his 76-82—158 that tied for 44th among the field of 92. He was followed by junior Jack Hoyle (Midlothian) (82-80—162, T-56th), sophomore Tucker Poole (Norfolk) (83-80—163, T-61st), along with juniors Jack Davis (Radford) (85-84—169, T-72nd) and Jack Craig (Raleigh, NC) (83-93—176, T-84th).

Hall tied for first among the tournament field in eagles (1), tied for fourth in par 3 scoring (2.88, -1), tied for eighth in par 5 scoring (4.88, -1), tied for ninth in pars (23) and tied for 19th in par 4 scoring (4.30, +6). Bernard also tied for fourth in par 3 scoring (2.88, -1) and tied for 16 in birdies (4). Wright tied for seventh in par 3 scoring (3.00, E).

Carnegie Mellon (PA) University's B Team won the event with its 296-308—604, while Eddie Ren of the University of Rochester (NY) took individual medalist honors at one-under par 70-73—143.

H-SC's B/C/D Teams will host the H-SC Spring Invitational at the Manor on March 15-16, a 36-hole tournament to be played at The Manor Golf Club in Farmville.
