H-SC took a
69-14 road win at ODAC opponent Guilford on Sept. 27 in Greensboro, North Carolina. The Tigers led 14-7 after one quarter and 48-7 at halftime, before outscoring the hosts 21-7 in the second half. The Garnet & Grey are 4-0 for the first time since 2010 and ranked nationally in both polls for the first time since 2013, equaling the highest ranking in the AFCA Poll since September 17, 2012. W&L lost 24-6 on the road at (RV)Randolph-Macon on Sept. 27 in Ashland. H-SC is competing in its 131st season of football and 50th year as a charter member of the ODAC. Head Coach Vince Luvara
H-SC is led by the second-year head coach who took over the program on December 7, 2023. The former defensive coordinator at Washington & Jefferson (PA) College from 2016-23, Luvara is the 29th head coach in the 131-year history of the storied Hampden-Sydney program. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native is no stranger to NCAA Division III, having played four years at Allegheny (PA) College and coached one year at Allegheny and two years at Misericordia (PA) University—each school members of Division III. Luvara is 9-5 at the College.
The Series
It can't get any closer ... H-SC and W&L are tied in the all-time series:
40-40-2. The Generals, however, have won seven of the last nine games against the Tigers, including five-straight at Everett Stadium. W&L took a
28-26 home win last October 12, 2024 in Lexington, and won
21-17 on its last visit to the Hill on Oct. 21, 2023. H-SC did enjoy a
44-43 overtime road win past the Generals on Oct. 22, 2022 in Lexington, but has not won at home against W&L since November 9, 2013, a
35-22 victory. The two programs first met on the gridiron in 1899, a 6-5 win by the Generals in Lexington.
Scouting The #21/24Â Tigers (4-0, 2-0)
H-SC is among 38 NCAA Division III teams remaining unbeaten on the season. The Tigers rank sixth in turnovers gained (11), ninth in scoring offense (46.5) and first downs offense (97), 11th in fumbles recovered (5), 17th in rushing offense (247.5), 20th in interceptions (6), 22nd in red zone offense (.944), 23rd in total offense (479.8), 25th in turnover margin (1.50), 28th in red zone defense (.615) and 36th in scoring defense (15.3).
Senior quarterback and team captain
Carter Sido (Dallas, TX) has passed for 884 yards (47-83-4) and 14 touchdowns with four interceptions thrown in four games—adding 96 yards rushing. He leads the ODAC in passing touchdowns, passing efficiency (192.1), total offense (980) and total offense per game (245.0), and is second in passing yards, passing yards per game (221.0) and completion percentage (56.6). Carter ranks third in NCAA Division III passing yards per completion (18.81), fourth in passing touchdowns, eighth in yards per pass attempt (10.65) and points responsible for (84), 11th in passing efficiency, 20th in points responsible for per game (21.0) and 36th in passing yards.
Junior running back
Terry Hicks (Clayton, NC) has rushed for 421 yards on 93 attempts (4.5) and six touchdowns, adding three receptions for 65 yards. He leads the ODAC in rushing touchdowns, is tied for first in total touchdowns (6), total points (36) and points per game (9.0), second in rushing yards, third in rushing yards per game (105.3) and all-purpose yards (486) and fourth in all-purpose yards per game (121.5). Terry ranks 14th in DIII rushing touchdowns, 23rd in total touchdowns, 24th in total points, 26th in rushing yards and 37th in rushing yards per game.

Mason Cunningham (Arlington) has 12 receptions for 314 yards and six touchdowns. He leads the ODAC in receiving touchdowns and yards per reception (26.17), is tied for first in total touchdowns (6), total points (36) and points per game (9.0), third in receiving yards and receiving yards per game (78.5) and tied for ninth in receptions. He has averaged 37.8 yards on 11 punts, including a long of 55 yards, with three fair-caught and four downed inside the 20. Joseph Gonzalez (Spotsylvania)Â has averaged 34.1 yards on 10 kick returns, including a long of 58 yards, and adds 216 yards rushing on 42 attempts (5.1) and one touchdown, and one reception for five yards. He leads the ODAC in kick return yards (341) and kick return average, and is second in all-purpose yards (562) and all-purpose yards per game (140.5). Scouting The Generals (1-3, 1-1)
Junior quarterback Ty Collins has passed for 394 yards (39-71-4) and four touchdowns with four interceptions thrown in four games, adding 68 yards rushing and one touchdown. Junior running back Anthony Crawford has rushed for 574 yards on 105 attempts (5.5) and five touchdowns. Freshman running back Ryan Clemens has rushed for 107 yards on 23 attempts (4.7). Junior slot back Fidel Small has rushed for 91 yards on 14 attempts (6.5) and one touchdown, adding seven receptions for 91 yards. Senior slot back Josh Garcia has eight receptions for 77 yards. Junior wide receiver Teddy Sparrow has six receptions for 78 yards and one touchdown. Sophomore wide receiver Jake Lohmann has six receptions for 64 yards. ODAC Offensive Player of the Week
Carter Sido was named the
ODAC Football Offensive Player of the Week following his game-high 276 yards (12-17-1) passing and a game-high and career-high six touchdowns with one interception for a remarkable 311.7 passing efficiency rating—all during the first 30 minutes at Guilford (9/27). His six touchdown passes tie for the third-most in program history, only behind J.D. Ricca (2005) and Travis Lane (2011), each with seven TDs in a game.

Carter Sido now has six career games with 250-plus yards passing, including two this season: a game-high and career-high 285 yards (17-27-1) and four touchdowns vs. (RV)Washington & Jefferson (9/13) ... a game-high 276 yards (12-17-1) and six touchdowns at Guilford (9/27). Robert Clarke is the program's sixth-straight
semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy®, college football's premier scholar-athlete award. Robert is among 177 semifinalists from all divisions, while one of three from the ODAC and among the 33 elected from Division III. He follows in the footsteps of Tyler Howerton '21, Kaleb Smith '22, Michael Harris '23, George Langhammer '24 and
Will Thomas '25—Howerton went on to become one of 12 finalists for the prestigious award in 2020. Robert is a Dean's List student majoring in economics and business with a minor in rhetoric, and has attained a 3.59 GPA.

Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®
Carter Sido was nominated for the 2025 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, recognizing college football student-athletes and head coaches for their commitment to community service and leadership beyond the gridiron. He devoted 40-plus hours of service to the following causes during 2024-25: The Big Event, Literacy Days and the Brother4Brother Mentorship Program. Carter is also a member of QBs vs Cancer, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a common objective to raise money in the fight against cancer—his efforts benefit Breast Cancer Awareness and Research. Unfortunately, he did not make the final roster of 23 award recipients announced on September 16.
Hampden-Sydney Football
H-SC has a 130-plus year history of football, amassing 587 wins since beginning in 1892. The Tigers have experienced great success over the years, including nine ODAC Championships, 10 Mason-Dixon Conference Championships, seven NCAA Division III Championship Playoff appearances, 88 All-America selections, 13 Academic All-America selections and 223 First Team All-ODAC honorees. H-SC also played in the 1970 and 1971 Knute Rockne Bowls (NCAA College Division East Regional Championship).
From Division III To FBS Memphis
Ryan Silverfield '03 became the 25th head coach in the University of Memphis football history in December 2019 and began his tenure by leading the Tigers into their first major bowl game appearance: the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic in Dallas. He is currently 47-21 overall in his sixth season at the helm of the Tigers, including 5-0 in 2025. Silverfield led Memphis to a record of 11-2 in 2024, including a 42-37 win past West Virginia in the Scooter's Coffee Frisco Bowl on December 17, 2024 at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas. Ryan coached four seasons as an undergraduate at H-SC, starting as an offensive assistant in 2000, serving as the defensive line coach during 2001 and 2002, before coaching the tight ends and H-backs in 2003.
