(8)Hampden-Sydney Welcomes Averett On Wednesday Night At 7 p.m.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College, ranked No. 8 in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25, welcomes Averett University in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action on Wednesday night, January 29, at 7 p.m. in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium at Kirby Field House. The nationally-ranked Tigers are 15-3 overall, 8-1 in the ODAC, following a 78-67 conference home win past Ferrum College on Jan. 25 in Fleet Gym. The Cougars are 8-10 overall, 3-6 in the ODAC, after an 86-66 home win past Eastern Mennonite University on Jan. 25 in Danville. The game can be heard locally on WVHL Radio, Kickin' Country 92.9 FM, and will also be available worldwide on the Internet at wvhl.net or via the TuneIn Radio App, while available to watch on the Tiger Sports Network live video stream at hscathletics.com. It will be "80s Night" promoted by the Roundball Club and "Girls Night Out" with the Longwood Sororities, and as a reminder, it's free admission for all regular season home athletic contests at the College.

Head Coach Caleb Kimbrough
H-SC is led by the sixth-year head coach who took over the program on April 4, 2019. The former head coach at Huntingdon (AL) College from 2016-19, Kimbrough is the 19th head coach in the 115-year history of the storied Hampden-Sydney program. He is no stranger to the ODAC, having played four years at Guilford (NC) College and coached six years with the Quakers, and one year at Washington and Lee University. Kimbrough is 98-41 at the College, ranking sixth in program coaching wins, while his current winning percentage (.705) ranks second all-time. He is the back-to-back National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division III District 6 Coach of the Year (2022-23, 2023-24), and was the 2022-23 ODAC Men's Basketball Bob Johnson Coach of the Year.

H-SC has been led by All-American fifth-year guard and third-year team captain Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC), who is averaging 20.0 points (34 3FGs, 86% FTs), 3.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists. Junior forward and team captain Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC) averages 12.6 points (56% FGs), 7.7 rebounds and 3.2 assists, while junior transfer guard and team captain Colin Radcliffe (Richlands, NC) adds 10.2 points (34 3FGs-47%) and 2.8 rebounds. Other top contributors include junior transfer guard Hamilton Campbell (Wytheville) (7.1 points, 16 3FGs, 3.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists), freshman guard Travis Stickney (Mount Pleasant, SC) (6.8 points, 3.7 rebounds), senior guard Nick Shryock (Davidson, NC) (6.6 points, 5.7 rebounds), senior guard Ayman McGowan (Memphis, TN) (6.2 points, 22 3FGs) and freshman forward John Campbell (High Point, NC (5.6 points, 71% FGs, 2.9 rebounds). H-SC shoots 47% (517-1105) from the field, including 33% (135-415) on three-point field goals, and 72% (288-400) at the free throw line. The Tigers are scoring 80.9 points, and yielding 71.2 points, for a +9.8 scoring margin.

Scouting Averett
AU is coached by 11th-year head coach David Doino and has been led by sophomore guard Jamison Graves (12.7 points, 20 3FGs, 84% FTs), senior guard Bryce Shaw (11.0 points, 50% FGs) and freshman guard Jackson Sellars (10.2 points, 3.9 rebounds). The Cougars shoot 41% (378-929) from the field, including 33% (95-290) on three-pointers, and 73% (311-425) at the line. AU is scoring 64.6 points, and yielding 68.7 points, for a -4.1 scoring margin.

Series History
H-SC and AU are playing for the 32nd time since first meeting on November 24, 1978. The Tigers lead the overall series at 20-11, including an 81-52 road win on February 7, 2024 in Danville. H-SC has won four-straight and five of the last six games played between the two schools, and is 10-6 against the Cougars in Fleet Gym, including an 88-60 home win on Nov. 29, 2023.

ODAC Offensive Player of the Week
Shane Fernald
was named the ODAC Offensive Player of the Week for games played Jan. 20-26 ... averaging 20.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in two games (2-0) ... posting a career-high and game-high 22 points (10-14 FGs, 2-3 FTs) off the bench during a 105-92 road win at Randolph (1/22), adding a game-high nine rebounds, along with three assists and one steal ... following with a double-double of 19 points (8-15 FGs, 3-5 FTs) and a career-high and game-high 12 rebounds during a 78-67 home win past Ferrum (1/25), his second double-double of the season and career, adding one assist, one steal and one block.

Bevo Francis Award Top 100 Watch List
Adam Brazil
was named to the 2024-25 Bevo Francis Award Top 100 Watch List on Jan. 15. The Clarence "Bevo" Francis Award is presented annually to the player who has had the finest overall season within NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA, USCAA and NCCAA. Adam is the second-straight finalist from the program, as Davidson Hubbard '24 made the 2023-24 Watch List.

played five games this month away from home, and within a span of 18 days (Jan. 4-22). The Tigers were 4-1 in those games, and are currently 38-20 (.655) on the road under Coach Kimbrough, including 7-1 this season.

Career Watch
Adam Brazil
is 12th in program history with 1,418 career points in 111 career games, and is now seventh in career assists with 345. He adds 141 career steals and 224 career three-pointers. Russell Turner '92—the current head coach at UC Irvine—is the all-time scoring leader (2,272).

is ranked No. 8 nationally in the week eight D3hoops.com Top 25 (1/27). The Tigers, ranked 23rd in the preseason, 13th in week one, 12th in week two, 9th in week three, 7th in week four, eighth in week five, 10th in week six, and now eighth in weeks seven and eight, earned 434 points in this week's rankings. Wesleyan (CT) University (19-0) is first this week with 608 points.

ranks 15th nationally in winning percentage (83.3), 34th in assist/turnover ratio (1.39), 41st in free throws made per game (16.0), 45th in rebound margin (6.7), 46th in scoring margin (9.8), 48th in offensive rebounds per game (13.2) and 50th in field goal percentage (46.8). Adam Brazil ranks 42nd in free throws (84) and 49th in points (360).

2024-25 Team Captains
Leading the Tigers are fifth-year Adam Brazil, along with juniors Shane Fernald and Colin Radcliffe. Brazil is serving in the leadership role for his third season, while Fernald and Radcliffe are each first-year captains. Adam is the son of Mark and Kristen Brazil and is majoring in English with minors in leadership in the public interest and rhetoric. Shane is the son of the late Jon Fernald and Cathy Smith and is majoring in English with a minor in rhetoric. Colin is the son of Ian and Sarah Radcliffe and is majoring in history.

2024-25 Coaching Staff
Coach Kimbrough is aided again this season by Bryson Gibson, promoted to associate head coach in May, while also in his sixth year with the program, third-year assistant coach Carson Long, along with first-year assistant coach Trevor Loscombe.

The Team Three-Point Stat
H-SC
has made at least one three-point field goal in 511 consecutive games, dating back to a 2005 home game vs. Emory & Henry (12/3, 0-1 3FGA). Ironically, the Tigers won that high-scoring contest 130-99 without making a three-pointer.

is competing in its 115th-year of basketball during 2024-25. The Tigers began this season with an overall program record of 1,517-1,096 since beginning in 1908, and currently total 1,532 wins. H-SC has posted 63 winning seasons, 17 seasons with at least 20 wins, six seasons with at least 25 wins, has won a record 11 ODAC Tournament Championships and has made 16 NCAA Tournament appearances.

Three Former Tigers Are Division I Head Coaches
H-SC currently has three former basketball team members and graduates of the College that are serving as NCAA Division I head coaches. Russell Turner '92 is in his 15th year at UC Irvine ... Ryan Odom '96 is in his second season at VCU and his ninth season as a DI head coach (UMBC, Utah State) ... Griff Aldrich '96 is in his seventh year at Longwood. Through Jan. 27, Turner was 307-183 at UCI (18-3 this season) ... Odom was 199-115 overall, including 40-18 at VCU (16-4  this season), 44-25 in two years at USU and 97-60 in five years at UMBC ... Aldrich was 125-92 at Longwood (16-6 this season). Add fifth-year Memphis head football coach Ryan Silverfield '03 (42-21, 2024 Scooter's Coffee Frisco Bowl Champion, 11-2) and the Tigers have four alumni serving as DI head coaches.
