No. 20 Hampden-Sydney Tied For Fourth At The Gate City Invitational

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The nationally-ranked No. 20 Hampden-Sydney College Golf team posted a first-round score of four-under par 284 on Monday to stand in a tie for fourth among 18 teams at the Gate City Invitational being played at the Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina. Senior team captain Nick Rubino (Charlotte, NC) is leading the Tigers with his six-under par 66—a collegiate-best for the two-time All-American—and is tied for third individually among the 93 collegiate golfers. Round two of the 54-hole tournament was suspended late Monday and will be completed early Tuesday before the final round.

Rubino posted six birdies and 12 pars during his outstanding opening round on the par 72 layout, and is being followed by senior John Hutcheson (Edina, MN) (72, T-32nd) and sophomore Joseph Weinstein (Midlothian) (73, T-32nd), senior Rece Lott (Fort Worth, TX) (74, T-57th) and sophomore Jack Barnes (Manakin Sabot) (76, T-80th). Hutcheson had four birdies and 10 pars. Weinstein had one birdie and 16 pars. Lott had three birdies and 10 pars. Barnes had one birdie and 13 pars.

The highly-competitive tournament field features eight of the Top 10 among 12 of the Top 25 teams in latest Bushnell/Golfweek DIII Coaches Poll, including defending national champion and No. 1 Methodist (NC), national runner-up and No. 2 Carnegie Mellon (PA), No. 3 Emory (GA), No. 4 Oglethorpe (GA), No. 6 Huntingdon (AL), No. 7 Washington and Lee, No. 8 Lynchburg, No. 10 Sewanee (TN), No. 13 Kenyon (OH), No. 18 Guilford (NC), No. 20 Hampden-Sydney, and No. 24 (tied) Piedmont (GA). In addition, Berry (Ga), Christopher Newport, host Greensboro (NC), Averett and Rhodes (TN) are participating in the tournament—each school receiving votes in the poll.
 
No. 6 Huntingdon is leading the event with its 13-under par 275, while Watcharakan Chankarn of Greensboro and John Bates of Rhodes are the individual leaders after 18 holes at seven-under par 65.

H-SC will continue and complete its competition in the two-day, 54-hole tournament on Tuesday, October 1, in North Carolina.
