PENFIELD, N.Y. -- The nationally-ranked No. 20 Hampden-Sydney College Golf team posted consecutive rounds of 286 and 295 on Sunday for a 36-hole score of seven-over par 581 to stand 12th among 18 teams at the
Flower City Preview played at the Midvale Country Club in Penfield, New York. Senior team captain
Nick Rubino (Charlotte, NC) (72-71) and classmate
Rece Lott (Fort Worth, TX) (70-73) are leading the Tigers with their respective two-round scores of one-under par 143 that has the pair tied for 26th individually among the 90 collegiate golfers.
Rubino posted five birdies and 27 pars during his first two rounds on the par 72 layout, while Lott had one eagle, five birdies and 24 pars. They are being followed by senior
John Hutcheson (Edina, MN) (71-75--146, T-45th), along with sophomores
Jack Barnes (Manakin Sabot) (73-76--149, T-60th) and
Joseph Weinstein (Midlothian) (75-81--156, T-84th). Hutcheson had four birdies and 26 pars, Barnes had eight birdies and 17 pars, and Weinstein had five birdies and 17 pars.
The highly-competitive tournament field features 12 of the Top 25 teams in Bushnell/Golfweek DIII Coaches Poll, including defending national champion and No. 1 Methodist (NC), national runner-up and No. 2 Carnegie Mellon (PA), No. 3 Emory (GA), No. 4 Oglethorpe (GA), No. 5 Illinois Wesleyan, No. 7 Washington and Lee, No. 13 Kenyon (OH), No. 16 Bethel (MN), No. 18 Guilford (NC), No. 20 Hampden-Sydney, and No. 23 Franklin & Marshall (PA). In addition, Rochester (NY), Berry (Ga), McDaniel (MD) and Hamilton (NY) are participating in the tournament—each school receiving votes in the poll.
No. 3 Emory is leading the event with its 31-under par 270-275--545, while Emory's Brian Hanson is the individual leader through 36 holes at 12-under par 65-67--132.
H-SC will continue and complete its competition in the two-day, 54-hole tournament on Tuesday, September 23, at 7:30 a.m. with 18 holes at the Cobblestone Creek Country Club in Victor, New York.
