FINAL RESULTS
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The nationally-ranked No. 20 Hampden-Sydney College Golf team completed round two with a score of 290, and then posted a final-round of 288, for a 54-hole team score of two-under par 862 (284-290-288) on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 10th among 18 teams at the
Gate City Invitational played at the Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina. Senior team captain
Nick Rubino (Charlotte, NC) led the Tigers with his five-under par 66-73-72--211 that tied for 12th individually among the 96 collegiate golfers.
Rubino was within one stroke of equaling his collegiate-low for 54 holes on the par 72 layout, finishing with 11 birdies and 37 pars during his three rounds. He was followed by senior
John Hutcheson (Edina, MN) (72-73-73--218, T-45th) and sophomore
Jack Barnes (Manakin Sabot) (76-72-70--218, T-45th), as well as sophomore
Joseph Weinstein (Midlothian) (72-72-75--219, T-52nd) and senior
Rece Lott (Fort Worth, TX) (74-75-73--222, T-68th). Hutcheson equaled his collegiate-low for 54 holes, finishing the event with seven birdies and 38 pars. Barnes established a new collegiate-low for 54 holes (218), by two strokes, and finished with nine birdies and 35 pars. Weinstein also established a new collegiate-low for 54 holes (219), by nine strokes, and finished with six birdies and 40 pars. Lott finished with 10 birdies and 28 pars.
The highly-competitive tournament field featured eight of the Top 10 among 12 of the Top 25 teams in latest Bushnell/Golfweek DIII Coaches Poll, including defending national champion and No. 1 Methodist (NC), national runner-up and No. 2 Carnegie Mellon (PA), No. 3 Emory (GA), No. 4 Oglethorpe (GA), No. 6 Huntingdon (AL), No. 7 Washington and Lee, No. 8 Lynchburg, No. 10 Sewanee (TN), No. 13 Kenyon (OH), No. 18 Guilford (NC), No. 20 Hampden-Sydney, and No. 24 (tied) Piedmont (GA). In addition, Berry (Ga), Christopher Newport, host Greensboro (NC), Averett and Rhodes (TN) are participating in the tournament—each school receiving votes in the poll.
Top-ranked Methodist won the event with its impressive 29-under par 284-277-274--835, while Monarchs' Haden Ruby (66-71-66) and Chase Walts (71-65-67) shared medalist honors at 13-under par 203.
H-SC will compete again at the
Golfweek Division III Fall Invitational on October 13-15, a three-day, 54-hole tournament to be played at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Miramar Beach, Florida.
