HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Senior
Woody Parsons (Virginia Beach) opened the meet with a pair of wins to help the Hampden-Sydney College swim team to a season-opening dual win over Virginia Wesleyan, 143-94, at Leggett Pool on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers won eight of the 14 events on the day.
"It was a fantastic feeling to host a home meet for the first time in 652 days," said 11th-year head coach
Betsy Leonard, "The team has worked really hard in and out of the pool this fall and im so proud of all of them. This win was definitely a team effort and we are looking forward to more success this season!"
H-SC got things started when the relay team of freshman
Brandon Hyde (Thousand Oaks, CA), Parsons, seniors
Jason Covaney (Williamsburg), and
Ben Hiter (Mineral) won the 200 Meter Medley Relay in a time of 2:02.54. The other relay team in the event was comprised of sophomore
Patrick Duffy (Charlotte, NC), freshman
Charles Adams (Mechanicsville), freshman
Matt Brooks (Springfield), and senior
Joe Corbett (Newport, NC) and finished third in a time of 2:18.80.
Parsons won his next event in the 800 Meter Freestyle with a time of 9:45.70, nearly 30 seconds ahead of a second place Marlin. In the 200 Meter Freestyle, junior
Andrew Rehak (Radford) finished second in a time of 2:12.10 while Adams finished third in 2:32.57.
In the 100 Meter Backstroke, H-SC went 1-2 with freshman
Quinn Hardimon (Alexandria) touching the boards first in 1:06.02 and Hyde finishing second in 1:09.27. Parsons won his third event of the day in the 100 Meter Breaststroke as the Tigers took the top three times. Parsons won in a time of 1:17.47, while senior
Dane Warner (Norfolk) finished second in 1:19.19 and Rehak finished third in 1:21.80.
Hardimon picked up his second win in the 200 Meter Butterfly in 2:50.46 while Hyde took second in 3:27.15. Covaney took second in the 50 Meter Free with a time of 26.98. Hiter and junior
Patrick Garifo (New London, NC) finished the 100 Meter Freestyle second and third in times of 1:06.67 and 1:07.88, respectively.
In his third event win of the day, Hardimon took first in the 100 Meter Backstroke in 2:27.73. Rehak claimed the number two spot in the event with a time of 2:30.86. In the 200 Meter Breaststroke, Warner finished second in 3:05.69.
The Tigers shined in the 100 Meter Butterfly, finishing first through fifth in the event. Parsons claimed another win with a time of 1:03.48 while Covaney (1:06.89) and Adams (1:09.18) rounded out the top three.
The final event of the day, the 400 Meter Freestyle Relay, saw the team of Brooks, Covaney, Rehak and Hardimon finish first in a time 3:58.65. The four man team of Adams, freshman
Carson Mann (Matthews, NC), Garifo, and Duffy finished fourth with a time of 4:38.61.
H-SC returns to the pool on Friday, November 5, when it hosts fellow ODAC member Randolph College. The dual with the WildCats gets underway from Leggett Pool at 5 p.m.
