SAVANNAH, Ga. -- No. 4 Hampden-Sydney College posted rounds of 289 and 280 on Monday for a 36-hole team score of 569 to stand sixth among 18 teams at The Savannah Invitational being played at The Club at Savannah Harbor in Georgia. Sophomore Hunter Martin/Gloucester Point is leading the Tigers with his two-round score of five-under par 70-69--139 that is tied for eighth individually among the 90 golfers.
Martin posted eight birdies and 25 pars during the first two rounds on the par 72, 6,845-yard layout. He is being followed by sophomore John Hatcher Ferguson/Rocky Mount (75-68--143, T-26th), senior Adam Hade/Richmond (73-71--144, T-33rd), junior Allen Smith/Durham, N.C. (75-72--147, T-48th) and senior Bruce Shober/Appomattox (71-79--150, T-70th). Ferguson added six birdies and 25 pars, as well, while Hade contributed four birdies and 29 pars, as H-SC led the tourney field in pars through 36 holes with 125.
The prestigious and highly-competitive tournament features 15 nationally-ranked Division III programs, including No. 13 Methodist, who is leading the event with its 12-under par 558 (282-276), followed by No. 2 Emory (564) and No. 9 Carnegie Mellon (564), along with No. 3 Huntingdon (565) and No. 14 Guilford (565) among the top five. The fourth-ranked Tigers are close behind in sixth, just 11 shots out of the event lead. James Mishoe of Guilford is the individual leader through 36 holes at 11-under 66-67--133.
H-SC will continue and complete its competition in the two-day, 54-hole tournament on Tuesday in Savannah, Georgia.
In addition, members of the H-SC B team are competing at the nearby Savannah Individual Tournament at the Savannah Quarters Golf Club. The Tigers are being led by freshman Trevor Elliott/Richmond with a round of 77, and he is followed by junior Varun Yerramsetti/Birmingham (79), sophomore Keith Marks/Midlothian (80), freshman Sam McNamara/Charlottesville (81) and senior John David Gooden/Myrtle Beach, S.C. (86). This group of young men will continue and complete their 36-hole event on Tuesday in Savannah, as well.
