SAVANNAH, Ga. -- No. 4 Hampden-Sydney College posted a final-round score of 293 on Tuesday for a 54-hole team score of 862 (289-280-293) to finish in a tie for eighth among 18 teams at The Savannah Invitational played at The Club at Savannah Harbor in Georgia. The Tigers, ranked No. 4 in both the Division III Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll and in the Golfstat Division III Rankings, were led by sophomore John Hatcher Ferguson/Rocky Mount with his three-round score of four-under par 75-68-69--212 that tied for 16th individually among the 90 golfers on the par 72, 6,845-yard layout.
Ferguson, who tied with the seventh-best final round (69), was followed closely by sophomore Hunter Martin/Gloucester Point (70-69-74--213, T-18th), along with senior Adam Hade/Richmond (73-71-75--219, 49th), junior Allen Smith/Durham, N.C. (75-72-76--223, T-59th) and senior Bruce Shober/Appomattox (71-79-75--225, T-69th). The Tigers led the tournament field in pars with 184, and tied for fourth in par 5 scoring (4.82, -11). Hade finished fifth in pars (40), followed by Smith (T-8th, 38), Martin (14th, 37) and Ferguson (T-19th, 36).
No. 9 Carnegie Mellon won the event with its 31-under par 833, including a 19-under 269 during the final round. The prestigious and highly-competitive tournament featured 15 nationally-ranked Division III programs, as ranked by Golfstat, including tourney runners-up and No. 3 Huntingdon (840), No. 2 Emory (845), as well as No. 13 Methodist (850) and No. 14 Guilford (850) among the event's top five. James Mishoe of Guilford took individual medalist honors at 13-under 203.
H-SC will play again at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational on March 20-22 at the Jekyll Island Golf Club in Georgia.
In addition, members of the H-SC B Team competed at the nearby Savannah Individual Tournament at the Savannah Quarters Golf Club in Pooler, Georgia. The Tigers were led by junior Varun Yerramsetti/Birmingham with a 36-hole score of 79-74--153 to tie for ninth of 20 golfers on the par 72, 6,550-yard layout. He was followed by freshmen Trevor Elliott/Richmond (77-82--159, T-13th) and Sam McNamara/Charlottesville (81-78--159, T-13th), sophomore Keith Marks/Midlothian (80-80--160, 16th) and senior John David Gooden/Myrtle Beach, S.C. (86-97--183, 20th).
The H-SC B Team will play in the Shenandoah Spring Fling on March 12-13 at the Orange Lake Golf Resort in Kissimmee, Florida.
