PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- No. 12 Hampden-Sydney College posted a 36-hole score of 310-303--613 on Saturday to stand eighth among 18 teams at the 2019 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Fall Preview on The Champion course at PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Sophomore John Hatcher Ferguson/Rocky Mount is leading the Tigers with his day one score of 72-77--149, tied for 12th individually among 90 golfers.
Playing the prestigious Champion's course, a par 72, 6,902-yard layout and host to the PGA Tour's Honda Classic each spring, Ferguson posted six birdies in his opening round before adding three more birdies in round two. He is being followed by classmate Hunter Martin/Gloucester (74-76--150, T-17), seniors Adam Hade/Richmond (83-74--157, T-49) and Bruce Shober/Appomattox (81-76--157, T-49), along with sophomore Allen Smith/Durham, N.C. who opened with an 88 before withdrawing from round two. Martin totaled seven birdies on the day for the Tigers.
Nationally-ranked No. 1 Illinois Wesleyan is leading the event with its 587, while IWU's Jimmy Morton is the individual leader at one-under 143 through 36 holes. The event features 14 of the Top 25 teams in the country.
H-SC will continue and complete its competition in the tournament on Sunday in Florida.
