WINCHESTER, Va. -- Senior Blake Hartman/Chester had three hits and two RBIs, but #6 seed Hampden-Sydney College dropped a season-ending 7-6 decision at #3 seed Shenandoah University on Monday in the 2019 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament Best-of-Three Series in Winchester.  Junior Cameron Meyers/Benson, N.C. took the pitching setback in relief for the visiting Tigers, who finished their season with a final record of 17-19-2 overall.

Playing as the 'home' team on the scoreboard, H-SC scored six runs on 13 hits with three runs in the second inning, one in the third and two in the fourth.  The Tigers led 6-4 through four innings, but unfortunately, were not able to add any more runs over the final five innings.  SU managed two runs in the fifth to tie it at 6-5, and the Hornets (28-11) scored what proved to be the winning run in the seventh inning to eliminate the visitors.

In the second, freshman Mark Evans/Yorktown (1-4, 2 RBIs) provided a two-run single with one out that scored both sophomore Ryan Clawson/Moseley (2-3) and Hartman (3-5, 2 RBIs), who had each singled, as well.  Junior Jacob Bartlett/Chesterfield (2-4, RBI) followed with an RBI single to plate Evans to tie the contest at 3-3.

In the third, Clawson walked with one out and crossed the plate with two outs when Evans reached on a throwing error.  That tied it at 4-4 after three innings.

In the fourth, Hartman contributed a clutch two-out, two-run single that scored both senior captain Tyler Blevins/Draper (1-5) and junior captain Matthew Spagnolo/Glen Allen (2-4), who had each singled, too.  That gave the Tigers a 6-4 advantage through four innings.

H-SC did not threaten again until the bottom of the ninth inning when Spagnolo doubled down the left field line to lead-off the final at-bat.  A pinch-runner was picked off at second base, before junior Andrew Kasiski/Chesapeake (1-5) and Clawson each singled to put runners at first and second with one out.  The Tigers could not take advantage, however, as a pair of strikeouts ended the contest.

Junior Jonathan Triesler/Chesterfield started and pitched the first 4.2 innings, allowing 11 hits and six runs, all earned, with four strikeouts and no walks.  Meyers (2-3) pitched 1.1 innings for the decision, yielding one hit and one run, earned, with two strikeouts and one walk.  Senior Trey Celata/Chesapeake tossed the final 3.0 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit with three strikeouts and no walks.

H-SC could return as many as 24 lettermen for the 2020 campaign.
