#7 Seed Hampden-Sydney Drops 2026 ODAC Tournament Quarterfinal On The Road At #2 Seed (6)Shenandoah 10-1

WINCHESTER, Va. -- Senior designated hitter Matthew Arnold (Danville) had an RBI, and senior center fielder and team captain Jack Wilson (Petersburg) had one hit and one run, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 10-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Baseball Tournament Quarterfinal decision on the road at nationally-ranked No. 6 Shenandoah University on Saturday afternoon in Winchester. Senior right-hander and team captain Sterling Austin (Petersburg) started and took the pitching setback for the visiting and #7 seed Tigers against the host and #2 seed Hornets in game one of the Best-of-Three Series. H-SC dropped to 18-22 overall, while SU improved to 31-9 overall. Game two in the conference tournament quarterfinal series is scheduled for (tomorrow) Sunday, May 3, at 1 p.m. in Winchester with game three, if necessary, to follow at 4 p.m.

H-SC scored one run on four hits with two errors … scoring the one run in thee fourth inning. SU scored 10 runs on 14 hits with one error … scoring one run each in the first, second, third and seventh innings, and three runs each in the fifth and eighth.

In the first, H-SC went down in order as senior right fielder and team captain Chase Sanford (Mechanicsville) grounded out to shortstop … sophomore third baseman Connor Powell (Midlothian) grounded out to third base … and Wilson (1-4) flied out to right field. SU scored one run on one hit, the run scoring from third base during a run-down on a steal attempt from first base for a one-run margin.

In the second, the Tigers went down in order again as sophomore catcher Seth Truesdale (Midlothian) (1-4) grounded out to first base … Arnold (RBI) flied out to center field … and junior first baseman and team captain Jase Howell (Portsmouth) flied out to left field. The Hornets added one run on one hit, the run scoring on a two-out single for a two-run margin.

In the third, the Garnet & Grey put their first runner on base as freshman shortstop Mason Lester (Lawrence, KS) (1-3) struck out looking … senior left fielder and team captain Greer Farr (Southern Shores, NC) drew a one-out walk … sophomore second baseman Gavin Smith (Mechanicsville) (1-3) flied out to deep right center field on a ball caught by the right fielder … and Sanford grounded out to second base on a ball that almost got through the right side. SU added another run on two hits, the run scoring on a single through the left side for a three-run margin.

In the fourth, Powell grounded out to shortstop … Wilson reached on a bunt single to the right side and advanced to second on a throwing error by the pitcher … Truesdale singled through the left side advancing Wilson to third … Arnold put down an RBI sacrifice bunt to the pitcher that scored Wilson and moved Truesdale to second … and Howell lined out to right field to make it 3-1. The Hornets did not score as it remained a two-run margin.

In the fifth, Lester struck out swinging … Farr grounded out to second base … and Smith flied out to right center field. SU added three runs on three hits, getting a pair of RBI singles to right field and a sacrifice bunt RBI to make it 6-1.

In the sixth, Sanford was hit by a pitch … Powell flied out to right field … Wilson flied out to center field … and Truesdale lined out to center field on a diving catch. The Hornets did not score as it remained a five-run margin.

In the seventh, Arnold grounded out to third base … Howell struck out looking … Lester singled to center field … sophomore Sam Vick (Capron) was hit by a pitch as a pinch-hitter for Farr … and the bases were loaded when Smith singled to left field … but a fielder's choice off the bat of Sanford ended the opportunity. SU added one run on one hit, and RBI single up the middle for a 7-1 margin.

In the eighth, Powell fouled out to right field … Wilson grounded out to second base … and Truesdale struck out swinging. The Hornets added three more runs on four hits, getting three RBI singles for a nine-run margin.

In the ninth, Arnold grounded out to first base … Howell grounded out to shortstop … Lester drew a two-out walk … and Vick was called out on strikes to end the game with the final 10-1 margin.

Austin (3-3) started on the mound for the Tigers and pitched the first 5.0 innings for the decision, allowing eight hits and six runs, five earned, with three strikeouts and five walks. Sophomore right-hander Reed Little (Spotsylvania) tossed 2.1 innings, allowing four hits and four runs, all earned, with no strikeouts and one walk. Senior right-hander Cooper York (Gastonia, NC) recorded two outs, facing four batters and allowing two hits with no strikeouts and no walks.
