Box Score WINCHESTER, Va. -- Senior Blake Hartman/Chester had three hits, but #6 seed Hampden-Sydney College dropped its opening game in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Baseball Tournament Best-of-Three Series at #3 seed Shenandoah University 5-0 on Saturday in Winchester. Junior Chase Mayberry/Appomattox took the pitching setback for the visiting Tigers (17-18-2) against the host Hornets (27-11).
H-SC collected seven hits while being shutout for just the second time in 37 games this season. Hartman led the Tigers with his three hits, including a double for the only extra-base hit by the visitors. Others adding singles on the day were junior Andrew Kasiski/Chesapeake (1-2), senior captain Tyler Blevins/Draper (1-3), junior Josh Duimstra/Glen Allen (1-3) and junior captain Matthew Spagnolo/Glen Allen (1-4). H-SC stranded eight baserunners during the game.
Mayberry (4-4) started and pitched 7.0 innings for the decision, scattering seven hits and five runs, four earned, with five strikeouts and one walk. Senior Trey Celata/Chesapeake tossed the final scoreless inning, allowing no hits with no strikeouts and one walk.
H-SC and SU will play again on Sunday, May 5, at 1 p.m., and a third game, if necessary, would follow game two on Sunday afternoon in Winchester.
