Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Junior Jonathan Triesler/Chesterfield had a double and three RBIs, while sophomore Matt Muehleck/Martinsville added a hit and two RBIs, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 13-10 non-conference baseball decision to Methodist (N.C.) University on Tuesday at Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark - Wurdeman Stadium. Freshman Ethan Badin/Richmond took the pitching decision in relief for the host Tigers (4-4-1) against the visiting Monarchs (11-2).
H-SC had 10 runs on 10 hits … scoring one run in the first inning, two in the fourth, four in the sixth and three in the seventh. The Tigers led 3-0 through four innings, 7-2 through six innings and 10-8 through seven innings. Unfortunately, the Monarchs rallied with five runs over their final two at-bats for the come-from-behind road win.
In the first, Triesler (1-3, 2B, 3 RBIs) walked with one out and later crossed the plate via a wild pitch. In the fourth, sophomore Matt Dalton/Virginia Beach (2-4, 2B) doubled down the right field line and scored when junior Jacob Bartlett/Chesterfield (1-5, RBI) reached on a fielder's choice. Junior Chase Counts/Virginia Beach (3-5) also crossed the plate during the inning after reaching on a bunt single.
In the sixth, Muehleck (1-1, 2 RBIs) provided a two-run single that plated both Counts and junior Josh Duimstra/Glen Allen (0-2), who had singled and gotten hit-by-a-pitch, respectively. Senior Tyler Blevins/Draper (0-1, RBI) added a sacrifice fly RBI to score Bartlett, who had reached on another fielder's choice while bunting, and Muehleck crossed the plate courtesy of an RBI double by sophomore Ryan Clawson/Moseley (2-4, 2B, RBI).
In the seventh, the Tigers loaded the bases after singles by Dalton, Counts and Bartlett, along with a walk to Duimstra. Dalton, however, was called out after getting caught in a rundown between second and third on the single by Counts. Triesler followed with his bases-clearing, three-run double down the left field line.
Freshman Trenton Tiller/Powhatan started and pitched the first 6.0 solid innings, scattering six hits and two runs, both earned, with four strikeouts and two walks. Senior Trent Jacobs/Farmville faced four batters in the seventh, yielding two hits and four runs, all earned, with no strikeouts and two walks. Badin (0-1) tossed 1.1 innings, allowing three hits and six runs, three earned, with no strikeouts and three walks. Counts pitched two-thirds of a scoreless inning, yielding no hits with no strikeouts and no walks. Freshman Matt Flatford/North Chesterfield pitched the final 1.0 inning, allowing no hits and one run, earned, with one strikeout and three walks.
H-SC will play on the road at non-conference opponent and nationally-ranked No. 3 Christopher Newport University on Thursday, March 7, at 1 p.m. in Newport News.
