Hampden-Sydney Lacrosse found themselves in a 4-2 hole after the first quarter but used a big eight-goal third quarter to defeat the Cardinals of the Catholic University of America 14-10.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• The squads traded goals midway through the first quarter with the game tied 2-2 at 8:48, but CUA took control of the game on the face-off X and goals from Owen Smith and Griffin Smith put the Cardinals ahead 4-2 after one quarter
• Scoring came at a premium in the second frame, but the Tigers got the better of the Cardinals as they were able to dominate time of possession behind the play of Jake Brummett at the x.
• Jack Little posted an unassisted tally at 6:19 to draw H-SC within one
• Following a Catholic timeout with 45 seconds to go in the half, the Cardinals turned it over and the Tigers cleared the ball to call a timeout with just six seconds left.
• The timeout proved to be crucial as H-SC drew up a quick hitter play and Hunter Brown scored from outside with less than two seconds to play
• Chandler Shaheen gave the Tigers their first lead of the game at the 12:25 mark in the third quarter, but CUA's Daniel Cannon would tie it back up at 5-5 thirty seconds later
• From there, the Tigers opened the floodgates with back-to-back goals by Connor Pool and Jack Hayden, putting the Tigers ahead 7-5 at 8:05
• Owen Smith found the back of the net again for the Cardinals at 6:36, but H-SC rattled off the next four scores, two courtesy of Jared Medwar, to jump out in front 11-6
• CUA's Mark Tocchio tried to stop the bleeding with a score at 37 seconds, but Charlie Doetzer fed Ian Levin just 12 seconds later to put H-SC up 12-7 at the end of three
• Catholic managed to make things a bit interested by scoring three of the first four goals in the final frame to find themselves down just 13-10 at 4:17, but the Cardinals committed turnovers on each of their next four possessions and H-SC was able to turn the last one into a quick goal by John Burke at 1:32
• H-SC won the ensuing face-off and ran out the clock to preserve the victory

• Jake Brummett won 12 of 20 face-offs with seven ground balls
• Hunter Brown tallied a hat trick
• Ian Levin and Chandler Shaheen both contributed two goals and an assist
